I was fortunate in having a day off today, so spent most of the day keeping an eye on the birds and the weather.
I think we probably had about three inches of snow last night, so when I fed the birds I swept the path clear and scattered seed, suet, sultanas, wholegrain bread and maggots, tipped the snow off the ground feeder and put fresh food on there, thawed the bird bath with the aid of the kettle and then left the birds to it for a while.
They came in waves. First the small birds, Chaffinches, a Dunnock, four Robins all tolerating each other, Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Blue Tits, House Sparrows and then the Starlings arrived along with the Blackbirds.
After most of them had retreated to the hedges the Wood Pigeons (12) arrived, along with the Magpies (9), then the Jackdaws (7) and Crows (2 but they didn't linger) and on and off through it all the male Great Spotted Woodpecker alternating between the peanut feeder and the fat balls.
There were loads of Blackbirds today - mostly females this morning but this afternoon I counted nine males and not a female in sight.
A Wren (my first for the year) made the most of a gap between the snow and a garden wall and seemed to be finding food fairly easily.
I topped up all the food and thawed the bird bath again late afternoon by which time the snow was about five inches deep and still powder dry.
I'm not looking forward to the drive in to work tomorrow.
a bit hidden but I thought this was unusual with the speckled head later in the day I saw one with a complete white tail feathers
