Margam Castle is a large Victorian era country house, built in Margam, Port Talbot, Wales, for Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot (1803–1890). It was constructed over a ten-year period, from 1830 to 1840, on a site which had been occupied for some 4,000 years and which from the 11th century until the dissolution of the monasteries was an abbey.

Although called a "castle", the building is really a large comfortable country house, one of many "mock" castles built in the 19th century during the Gothic Revival.

After making a Grand Tour of Europe as a young man, Talbot returned to south Wales and from 1830 he set about redeveloping the family estate at Margam. The new castle was designed in a Tudor Gothic style by the architect Thomas Hopper (1776–1856), while Edward Haycock Snr (1790–1870) was supervisory architect and designed parts of the interior and exterior of the house, the stables, terraces and lodges. Talbot also took a keen interest in the project, encouraging his architects to borrow elements from Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire (ancestral home of the Talbots and home to his cousin William Henry Fox Talbot) and Melbury House in Dorset (home of his mother's family, the Fox-Strangeways, Earls of Ilchester).

William Henry Fox Talbot was a frequent visitor to Margam, and the castle featured as an image in some of his early photographic experiments. Margam's links with photography also include being the location of the earliest known Welsh photograph, a daguerreotype of the castle taken on 9 March 1841 by the Reverend Calvert Richard Jones.

After the death of Emily Charlotte Talbot, the daughter of its first owner, the castle passed to her nephew and continued to be used by the Talbot family until 1941, when it was sold. David Evans-Bevan, who bought it, found it too large to live in, but could not find any public organisation interested in taking it on, and it fell into disrepair. For many years it belonged to the local authority, but was not open to the public. In 1977, a fire caused substantial damage, and it was only after this that a restoration project began in earnest.

Today Margam Castle is a Grade I listed building and is in the care of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.

Margam Castle was visited by the television programme Most Haunted in its 2006 series and also by SyFy's Ghost Hunters International in 2010. It has become a very popular venue for paranormal investigation events groups. In 2013 the Margam Ghost Walk (which seeks to explain the stories of the reputed hauntings but which does not undertake paranormal investigation) became the most popular attraction in the Neath Port Talbot authority area, according to the review website Tripadvisor.

I was fortunate enough to ride Maelstrom on its last night with all the bloggers and fans of the ride. I was not the last to ride, but I did experience the last showing of the movie for the regular public. It was quite emotional for a ride that really when it came down to it, not many people liked. It seemed weird all of these people wanting to save it, when if you asked them last year if they should get rid of it for something bigger and better they would all say yes. Capel Mair Chapel

Known by many names over the years such as the Cryke Chaple, Hen Egwlys and Capel Mair, the place of worship, established circa 1470 was built as a place of worship for local peasents/yeomen who did not have the right to worship in the Abbey itself. When I left Disneyland in January of 2010, I went through a major withdrawal phase. I couldn't live without Disney in my life. I would go to the stores and see Princess things and see people referencing Disney stuff everywhere. Which do you like better, California vs Orlando Tower of Terror?

I am fortune enough to have a great roommate who works at the Hollywood Tower of Terror. He is a blast to hang out with and I enjoy going to see him at work. Sometimes it's just to bum a ride home, but mostly because he's great at what he does. This particular night I was coming to get some shots... and then a ride home. I got off the bus and this was what I saw. I whipped out my tripod and boom got this shot with a couple others. I love the Tower of Terror here in Walt Disney World. The difference (of course I have to compare everything to Disneyland) between the Disneyland version is interesting. I love the queue and the riding into the 5th dimension parts of this one, but the boiler room in California combined with some of the effects and the drops, I am certain of, are better over there.

The angle of the Tower here is not as photogenic as in California, and it makes it a bit difficult to get a great shot, or at least of the main side. I'm pretty sure I can find an angle somewhere in the park, but I haven't been able to. Challenge Accepted! Just some fun tidbits about Tower that you may not have known. Expedition Everest is only 0.9 inches taller than Tower. There is no air conditioning on the right side 5th dimension corridors. And lastly, two of the chairs in the lobby are from the 1600's.

What do you think the story is here?

One of the things that people seem to miss as they adventure through Animal Kingdom is the little details. The roads have tracks in them of local types of tracks you would find, be it a bike or little car. In Asia the roads and building are just full of these little but profound details. As I was walking along I saw this walkway with backpacks and lanterns and next to the building was this bike. I had to wonder what the story was...

The original building at Cross Inn, was built in 1896 and was first used as an animal feed store. The shop was added in the early 1920s after the tailor, David Thomas, took over the premises

The building is timber-framed, match-boarded on the inside and clad with horizontal timber boards on the outside; the roof covering is corrugated iron sheeting. David Thomas worked here, assisted by various apprentices, including at one time his daughter. Electricity was installed in 1938. The shop closed in 1967 and the building was moved to the museum in September 1988.

The shop itself has been stocked as it would have been during the early 1950s with the actual materials left on the shelves after the business closed. The workshop area has been furnished with equipment not only from Cross Inn, but also from the shops of D.J. Rees in Brechfa and Daniel Davies in Rhydlewis.

Which park icon is your favorite?

One of my first times in the Magic Kingdom fell on a full moon. I was surprised there weren't more people trying to capture what I saw. Then again this is not an easy shot to get when the moon is so bright. Even then trying to give the moon its full justice versus a crisp and bright foreground is also not easy to do. But I'm glad I got to get this photo on the day I did. Turns out that the full moon was something special. Had you stayed up that night to about 3 am...

The Oakdale Workmen's Institute was built in 1917 to serve as a focus for social, educational and cultural life within the newly established coal mining community there. It was funded by a loan from the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, which the miners then repaid over the following years.
