I just want to tribute my pic to Social Geographic for his/her special and really important, essential!!! work...

Because there's too many childs in our streets and now, just a few people can see them...

No need to go in a poor land : In Paris too, we can cross their way and... we're blind. No, we're not inhuman, we're just taken in the flow of our lives until...the day where we're struck, stuned by the truth.

Personnaly, that's when I have taken this pic with my son that everything's back : Two or three times I saw this and I prefered to forget.

Is it real like this, the 21st century?

We're lucky women, men and now, I gonna try to remember this every single day.

"Worst of all, violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families and on society as a whole. Most societies prohibit such violence -- yet the reality is that, too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned." (UN SECRETARY-GENERAL in International Women’s Day 2007 Message.)

According to one United Nations estimate, 113 to 200 million women are “demographically missing” from the world today. That is to say, there should be 113 to 200 million more women walking the earth, who aren’t. By that same estimate, 1.5 to 3 million women and girls lose their lives every year because of gender-based neglect or gender-based violence and Sexual Violence in Conflict ( Read more about UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict www.stoprapenow.org/ ). Millions of young women disappear in their native land every year. Many of them are found later being held against their will in other places and forced into prostitution. According to the UNICEF ( www.unicef.org/gender/index_factsandfigures.html ),Girls between 13 and 18 years of age constitute the largest group in the sex industry. It is estimated that around 500,000 girls below 18 are victims of trafficking each year. We can point a finger at poverty. But poverty alone does not result in these women’s deaths and suffering; the blame also falls on the social system and attitudes of the societies.

India alone accounts for more than 50 million of the women who are “missing” due to female foeticide - the sex-selective abortion of girls, dowry death, gender-based neglect and all forms of violence against women.

Since the late 1970s when the technology for sex determination first came into being, sex selective abortion has unleashed a saga of horror in India. Experts are calling it "sanitized barbarism".The 2001 Census conducted by Government of India, showed a sharp decline in the child sex ratio in 80% districts of India. The Census Report of 2001 reveals a highly skewed child sex ratio (0-6 year-olds), that fell from 945 females per 1,000 males in 1991 to an all-time low of 927 in 2001. Additional data from the India’s birth and death registration service indicates that the figures have further fallen to fewer than 900 females per 1,000 men over the last few years. In some parts of the country, the sex ratio of girls to boys has dropped to less than 800:1,000. It's alarming that even liberal states like those in the northeast have taken to disposing of girls. Worryingly, the trend is far stronger in urban rather than rural areas, and among literate rather than illiterate women, exploding the myth that growing affluence and spread of basic education alone will result in the erosion of gender bias.

The United Nations has expressed serious concern about the situation.

Over the years, laws have been made stricter and the punishment too is more stringent now. But since many people manage to evade punishment, others too feel inclined to take the risk. Just look at the way sex-determination tests go on despite a stiff ban on them. Only if the message goes out loud and clear that nobody who dares to snuff out the life of a female foetus would escape effective legal system would the practice end. It is only by a combination of monitoring, education, socio-cultural campaigns, and effective legal implementation that the deep-seated attitudes and practices against women and girls can be eroded.

The decline in the sex ratio and the millions of Missing Women are indicators of the feudal patriarchal resurgence. Violence against women has gone public – whether it is dowry murders, honour killings, sex selective abortions or death sentences awarded to young lovers from different communities by caste councils, rapes and killings in communal and caste violence, it is only women’s and human rights groups who are protesting – the public and institutional response to these trends is very minimal.

More women are working now than ever before, but they are also more likely than men to get low-productivity, low-paid and vulnerable jobs, with no social protection, basic rights nor voice at work according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) issued for International Women’s Day 2008.

United Nations - New use of cluster bombs threatens global ban, report warns

I'm sure you all have heard the news. Isn't it sad? Some reports say as many as 6,000 redwings fell dead. I read local news showed the birds were uninjured and laying suffering and dying on the ground. While national news found birds that were already dead (many had been run over by cars) to show on the news. Making it look like these birds had died of injury. But that is not the case.

Red-winged Blackbirds are such sweet little birds and such loving parents. I once saw a male die and get eatten, protecting his chicks. They work without rest, to raise thier broods. I just love the red-wings very much.

I ran across a folder of my red-wing pics today and started looking thru it. Even though I already have some red-wing babies in my stream, thought I'd post a few new ones to bring awarness to them. I'm hoping maybe people who don't know these birds as well as I do, can, in some small way, understand better what a tragedy it is. We need to find out what really happened to them. 5,000 deaths is a LOT and its very sad.

Benabarre (Huesca).

This is a totally different post...feel free to watch these clips and read the "Rainbow Bridge" story.

.

I love trees...love to support animals and the environment...Through a whole year I let my passion slip away.

.

I sat at the doctor's office today. I looked at a magazine and the first page that opened up - it was a story about an Illegal monkey buisness. It hit me -- I was too much self centered the last couple of months...did not focus on the importance anymore.

Rainbow Bridge by Author unknown...

.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

I am one of the very unfortunate to lose a baby, I lost 2 babies before falling pregnant with Emily-Kate. It's been a very hard day for me anyway today as it was my nanna's funeral and both me and my Hubby have talked alot about our babies today. (without at first even realising the day)

Today is the International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, a global expression of sympathy, remembrance and support for those too many families who are affected by the loss of a baby in pregnancy or beyond.

Across the world, at 7pm local time, candles will be lit for those babies who have died. At this time we will remember them all; either our own children or babies of others who have nonetheless touched our lives in such a brief time.

In the UK, Babyloss is a collaborative awareness effort involving charities and voluntary organisations which support those affected, and lobby for research and action to understand more about and, where possible, prevent pregnancy loss.

You don't have to have been affected by loss yourself to help; though sadly the numbers of families affected makes it unlikely that there in no-one in your circle that has not suffered in this way.

You can help in so many ways:

* If you know someone grieving for their child - drop them a line today. Give them a hug. Show them you remember their loss and that you are there to share their memories and sadness. Too many families feel locked in silence, afraid to start a conversation, afraid to upset others, and alone in their grief.

* Click on the site www.babyloss.com, and find out more about the organisations who support those in need. Could you volunteer? Could you raise money or awareness for these causes?

* Even quietly finding out more and being able to pay that understanding and support forward if you encounter a person in need in the future is invaluable. Sometimes the biggest change is in thought, not just in deed.

Eucomis are bulbous perennials forming a large basal rosette of strap-shaped leaves, with an erect stem bearing a dense raceme of star-shaped flowers, topped by a crown of leafy bracts, opening in late summer and early autumn. This one is in bud and opens to gorgeous star-shaped blooms!

Taken on rather a drab day in July!! I look forward to seeing it next summer.

Happy New Year to you all! :-))

Austin anti-war activity, Spring, 1970. These events took place over the course of the spring of 1970 which culminated in the largest anti-war march and protest on both the UT campus and the Austin community at large. This followed national protests and events that galvanized the anti-Nixon Vet Nam actions that escalated the war in Indo - China instead of ending the war as he promised in his presidential campaign of 1968. Notice that unlike today, few of us had cameras. And there was no social media via or mobile phone, yet so many like minded people gathered for common purpose.

The images displayed here are not sequential, but do chronicle the events of those months. I own full copyright of these photos, have never exhibited them before. I was not paid to take this photos nor did I work for any company, business, or government entity. This was strictly a personal collection of photographs I took at the time. I was sometimes accompanied by a fellow photographer back in the day, but do not know what or if she has retained any of her film. I plan on contacting the Austin History Center to fill gaps in the history of the time.

Joan Baez' speech was not in any way related to the events that took place in the street during that time. She gave a speech at the UT Student Union in the Main Ballroom. I moved to the front of the crowded assembly and took the photos before, during and after her speech when she made herself available for individual and group interaction.
