Merci.

The sunny days are here, please, in the evening, at night, up!

Just yesterday, two little ones at two meters intervals crushed on the bottom sides! Hedgehogs are on the verge of extinction. According to some studies, the hedgehog could disappear within two years! A citizen’s gesture of lowering his speed could save a few.

Please share, rotate this photo to try to make people aware. Thank you.

The Maxcon building site close to my office as seen from further awar against a cloudy grey sky. It is growing taller by the day as that red concrete crane pumps out more floors.

"We were those, who knew without understanding,

filled with informations but without awarness,

full to the brim with knowledge but so little experience.

So we were going on and could not stop ourselves."

This picture was taken by Kasey Macbeth. Sim is Lighting The Way - Autism Awareness 2016 that I designed. Great charity...and wonderful place to talk some pictures. Sim is now open until April 17th. Come check it out! maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SkyBeam%20Hideaway/112/230/17

Of course, I am aware that the artistic value of this photo is rather low, because at this point in time it was already dusk and therefore there was very little light available.

Nevertheless, the photo has great meaning for me because it symbolizes my first hike in a forest near the town of Sebnitz in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. A place that will be my home in about three months (which probably won't interest many of you, but I still want to put it into words).

And just as confusing and uncertain as the foreground seen here is my future, into which I took the first step today by signing a rental agreement.

Many areas are still hidden in the dark, but I am very confident that these will brighten up in due course.

Merci d'avance

En : The sky, between land and sea

This photograph was taken from the top of the Dune du Pilat (Gironde), looking west towards the Atlantic Ocean. Located between the Landes forest and the Arcachon basin, the Dune du Pilat is the highest dune in Europe..... Not easy to climb to the top at night with all the photographic equipment..... But the effort was worth it!

On a good part of the sky are visible "orange clouds"... ? This is called "airglow", a natural phenomenon caused by a chemical reaction in the upper atmosphere, where the sun's rays excite the molecules, which then emit a very weak light (chemiluminescence) of green or orange colour. This phenomenon can only be observed under a clear sky, free of light pollution, which is the case here towards the west, towards the ocean. Moreover, it is not or hardly visible on the left of the image, because of the light pollution of Biscarosse.

Beyond the Airglow and the Milky Way, we can see Jupiter (far left), and to its right Saturn, Altair and Vega. A nice alignment, especially since Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, was very bright (one month after its opposition).

On the left side of the image, you can see a part of the Landes de Gascogne forest. This forest was made infamous this summer because of a terrible fire that destroyed more than 20,000 hectares of nature... We become even more aware of the fragility of our small planet in the face of the immensity of the universe.

"Worst of all, violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families and on society as a whole. Most societies prohibit such violence -- yet the reality is that, too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned." (UN SECRETARY-GENERAL in International Women’s Day 2007 Message.)

“Almost every country in the world still has laws that discriminate against women, and promises to remedy this have not been kept.” (UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the eve of International Women's Day 2008)

According to one United Nations estimate, 113 to 200 million women are “demographically missing” from the world today. That is to say, there should be 113 to 200 million more women walking the earth, who aren’t. By that same estimate, 1.5 to 3 million women and girls lose their lives every year because of gender-based neglect or gender-based violence and Sexual Violence in Conflict.

In addition to torture, sexual violence and rape by occupation forces, a great number of women and girls are kept locked up in their homes by a very real fear of abduction and criminal abuse. In war and conflicts, girls and women have been denied their human right, including the right to health, education and employment. “Sexual violence in conflict zones is indeed a security concern. We affirm that sexual violence profoundly affects not only the health and safety of women, but the economic and social stability of their nations” –US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, 19 June 2008 (Read more about UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict www.stoprapenow.org/ ).

Millions of young women disappear in their native land every year. Many of them are found later being held against their will in other places and forced into prostitution. According to the UNICEF ( www.unicef.org/gender/index_factsandfigures.html ),Girls between 13 and 18 years of age constitute the largest group in the sex industry. It is estimated that around 500,000 girls below 18 are victims of trafficking each year. The victims of trafficking and female migrants are sometimes unfairly blamed for spreading HIV when the reality is that they are often the victims.

According to the UNAIDS around 17.3 million, women (almost half of the total number of HIV-positive) living with HIV ( www.unaids.org ). While HIV is often driven by poverty, it is also associated with inequality, gender-based abuses and economic transition. The relationship between abuses of women's rights and their vulnerability to AIDS is alarming. Violence and discrimination prevents women from freely accessing HIV/AIDS information, from negotiating condom use, and from resisting unprotected sex with an HIV-positive partner, yet most of the governments have failed to take any meaningful steps to prevent and punish such abuse.

United Nations agencies estimated that every year 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing the procedure – which involves the partial or total removal of external female genital organs – that some 140 million women, mostly in Asia, the Middle East and in Africa, have already endured.

We can point a finger at poverty. But poverty alone does not result in these girls and women’s deaths and suffering; the blame also falls on the social system and attitudes of the societies.

India alone accounts for more than 50 million of the women who are “missing” due to female foeticide - the sex-selective abortion of girls, dowry death, gender-based neglect and all forms of violence against women.

Since the late 1970s when the technology for sex determination first came into being, sex selective abortion has unleashed a saga of horror in India and other Asian countries. Experts are calling it "sanitized barbarism”. Worryingly, the trend is far stronger in urban rather than rural areas, and among literate rather than illiterate women, exploding the myth that growing affluence and spread of basic education alone will result in the erosion of gender bias. The United Nations has expressed serious concern about the situation.

The decline in the sex ratio and the millions of Missing Women are indicators of the feudal patriarchal resurgence. Violence against women has gone public – whether it is dowry murders, the practice of female genital mutilation, honour killings, sex selective abortions or death sentences awarded to young lovers from different communities by caste councils, rapes and killings in communal and caste violence, it is only women’s and human rights groups who are protesting – the public and institutional response to these trends is very minimal.

Millions of women suffer from discrimination in the world of work. This not only violates a most basic human right, but has wider social and economic consequences. Most of the governments turn a blind eye to illegal practices and enact and enforce discriminatory laws. Corporations and private individuals engage in abusive and sexist practices without fear of legal system.

More women are working now than ever before, but they are also more likely than men to get low-productivity, low-paid and vulnerable jobs, with no social protection, basic rights nor voice at work according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) issued for International Women’s Day 2008. Are we even half way to meeting the eight Millennium Development Goals?

Since the late 1970s when the technology for sex determination first came into being, sex selective abortion has unleashed a saga of horror in India. Experts are calling it "sanitized barbarism".The 2001 Census conducted by Government of India, showed a sharp decline in the child sex ratio in 80% districts of India. The Census Report of 2001 reveals a highly skewed child sex ratio (0-6 year-olds), that fell from 945 females per 1,000 males in 1991 to an all-time low of 927 in 2001. The ratio even dropped further to 800:1,000 in some specific parts of the country. Additional data from the India’s birth and death registration service indicates that the figures have further fallen to fewer than 900 females per 1,000 men over the last few years.

The decline in the sex ratio and the millions of Missing Women are indicators of the feudal patriarchal resurgence.

Leiden has many beautiful canals. ‘De Grachtwacht’ is working on making them plastic-free and making people aware of the urban nature in and around the canals. With their canoe fleet, they organize weekly clean-ups and scientific research is done on plastic pollution. More than 1000 volunteers participate in the weekly clean-up. The most exciting finds are exhibited in the bridge keeper's house on the Marebrug.

The 2001 Census conducted by Government of India, showed a sharp decline in the child sex ratio in 80% districts of India. In some parts of the country, the sex ratio of girls to boys has dropped to less than 800:1,000.

It's alarming that even liberal states like those in the northeast have taken to disposing of girls. Worryingly, the trend is far stronger in urban rather than rural areas, and among literate rather than illiterate women, exploding the myth that growing affluence and spread of basic education alone will result in the erosion of gender bias. The United Nations has expressed serious concern about the situation.

Over the years, laws have been made stricter and the punishment too is more stringent now. But since many people manage to evade punishment, others too feel inclined to take the risk. Just look at the way sex-determination tests go on despite a stiff ban on them. Only if the message goes out loud and clear that nobody who dares to snuff out the life of a female foetus would escape effective legal system would the practice end. It is only by a combination of monitoring, education, socio-cultural campaigns, and effective legal implementation that the deep-seated attitudes and practices against women and girls can be eroded.

-----

Those who knows us, are aware of the fact that Wouter and myself don't stay very long on the same place. So after three hours in Willemsdorp (at both sides of the bend) we decided that it was more than time to make a move.

The slope in Dordrecht Zuid was our next destination and after an half hour waiting time, we could cratch the "Flying Dutchman" of LTE of our lists of never photographed advertising locos. That went quite well also!

A number of Macaws live in this private lagoon. The place serves as a dormitory where they gather at night but it also serves as a nesting place thanks to the many cavities in the dead trees.

It is thus without question an exceptional place to protect. The owners are only partially aware of this, because they allow families to come and play or picnic around this lagoon with their stereophonic devices at full volume. Strange cohabitation! Fortunately the Macaws remain at a distance because of the presence of water. Is the balance sustainable?

In any case, it is the only place of this type, there is no equivalent government project and no intention either!

Ever noticed the candles sparkle with a particular brilliant light before blowing out?

The shiny flame of Susanna Volpe, aka SusyFox, left a trail of dazzling light among all those who knew her, before blowing out prematurely.

SusyFox is now a bright star up in the skies and will remain unforgotten.

In memoriam Susanna Volpe, Italian from Torino,

✞ Oct. 27th 2021 R.I.P.

***************************************************************************

I never came to know personally Susanna aka SusyFox, I had not this privilege, my fault, I was never a member in the groups she had founded but she was an adjoint admin of the Group "Crème de la Crème" that I have been guiding for two years until Alf.G. absurdly closed it.

When I have been requested to become an admin of that Group, I noticed in the circle of admins SusyFox's profile and that her buddy icon had an added phrase "off for health problems". She never came back "on", sadly, but tons of people on Flickr knew and loved her humanity and inventions in creating or administrating groups.

The light... Susanna had also an intense and heartfelt passion for photography and remarkable photographic skills.

A great human being devoted to the Good who has left behind a dazzling trail of light in the memory of many people, even here on Flickr.

As the most recent admin of Crème de la Crème, I felt the urge to do something in her memory, just a little nothing but, still, to do it!

I've checked if I had taken photos on the day she left but I was not shooting that day. The closest photo to that date, the 27 October, I could retrieve is this 9-candle silver candlestick, shot 4 days before, a photo I had not shared yet.

I want to dedicate this picture to Susanna, thinking at her like the brightest flame (as the candle to the far right of my photo), the shiniest one that blowed out prematurely.

Notice I've used all white tealights for this shooting but, a bit magically, in the darkness they turned out pink, in different pinkish hues, as it is well documented by this photo.

No more sufference, anguish, no more pain nor wounds now, dear Susy, only happiness where you are...

On the way, a little girl offers to have her picture taken with her alpaca for a fee. They're both beautifully dressed and make a charming duo.

I can't resist and point my camera at them. I'm well aware that she's here for the money and perhaps doesn't go to school. But do I have the right to be outraged and judge her? What do I know about her and the poverty she and her family would be in without this income? In my opinion, with our European opulence, we're in no position to impose moral standards.

I hand her five soles. She smiles at me; she's happy!

Pensée du jour :

La douleur te rend plus fort. Les larmes te rendent plus brave. Les séparations te rendent plus conscient. Remercie le passé pour un meilleur futur..

The pain makes you stronger. Tears make you braver. The separations make you more aware. Thank the past for better future

Be still and not know. Choiceless Awarness.

We’re aware of the problem and are fixing it. Thanks for your patience.

Ke palle....

Felice settimana , Dan !

"The light of memory, or rather the light that memory lends to things, is the palest light of all. I am not quite sure whether I am dreaming or remembering, whether I have lived my life or dreamed it. Just as dreams do, memory makes me profoundly awar"

Ionesco

Benabarre (Huesca).
