Sculpt progress on the Newborn. Alien: Resurrection - 1:18 scale.

With the sculpt of the ALIENS(86) Queen in progress, I thought it would be fun to match her up with her future offspring thanks to Ripley 8 (going to have to be a fan to know what I'm talking about) and get a look at the scale. Once the lower jaw of the Queen is complete I will get a better idea but so far I think both scale pretty well with one another and enhances my hopes to one day have a Resurrection diorama featuring the "Birth of the Newborn". Till then, both stands on their own and both have a ton of work to have down before that road is crossed.

This update focuses in on the Newborn and it's open mouth variant I'm working on. My previous update featured the jaw wired into place. This week I'm sculpting in the gaps and detailing the optional tongue that will be held by a magnet.

From some of the early production images, the tongue appeared to have "buds" over its surface...possibly glads for smell and taste. A trait from Ripley's side of the family for sure. So I'm taking a blank tongue I formed using Aves FIXIT sculpt and detailing it with small portions of additional FIXIT forming the buds. The entire surface isn't covered in these glads so I need to pay attention as to not overdo the surface with these things LOL!

I know the Newborn doesn't get a ton of love from the Alien community but I must admit, it's been one of my more enjoyable projects over the past year or so...and I think it's because of the fusion between the human and the xenomorph. You get to work with a little of both when sculpting this guy....at least I don't have to sculpt a TAIL! LOL! That Queen though...the tail will be a major project in itself.

Sculpted the head (not the carapace "crown") of the beast over the July 4th holiday and made adjustments during the week. Working on solving the articulation question and I'm thinking a double ball socket may be the way to go. That or a magnet...not sure yet.

Next challenge will be the teeth. Good God that will be a job. Will have to sculpt the set separately so I can cast them later in clear resin.

Later I'd like to sculpt a version of the head that is tucked up into the carapace "crown".

Sculpt update on the Egg Morpher - ALIENS: Definance (Dark Horse Comics) - 1:18 scale.

Sculpting hands. Little bits at a time. Small scale, heavy detail. The hands will resemble those of the Big Chap (Alien 79) but are larger and and less elegant as the Giger version. Using Aves FIXIT.

Dome sculpt and vac forming setup for the Protomorph (Xenomorph) from Alien: Covenant - 1:18 scale.

Using a test cast from earlier today, I used Aves FIXIT sculpt and built up the dome for the beast. Sculpted the dome, allowed the FIXIT to sure and reduced the dome all over so I can achieve the correct proportional build of the clear PETG dome the original sculpt represented.

Smoothed and polished the sculpt of the dome, reduced the details below it and built up base to stabilize the piece for vac forming. I'll now be able to use this piece over and over again to create the clear domes....although I may need to make adjustments once some test domes are made...tomorrow. #alien #aliens #covenant #sculpture #dome #vacuumforming #PETG #avesstudio #FIXITsculpt #protomorph #xenomorph

Sculpt made using Aves FIXIT Sculpt from Aves Studio LLC

Began working on the upper torso of the figure, exaggerating the dept of the ribcage a bit so a thinner application of FIXIT can be added once cured. Need to add detail to the back and create the "spikes" that protrude.

Began filling the detail to the back "pipes" of the beast. I've also begun the sculpt of the creature's hands which will be very similar to the Giger Alien hands but larger. The rough sculpt right now resemble Bugs Bunny gloves and not that of the nightmarish xenomorph but no worries, that will all change....just how I work.

Looks kind like a bust doesn't it...not a bad idea. Still, it's only the buildup of the upper torso. I will be sculpting detail once a needled it down a bit more. Then will come the lower abdomen, arms. legs etc.

The upper torso and head will be one piece. Just don't have the tech available to create an articulated neck that works with this sculpt. If anything it would have been a rubber sheath that would drape over and articulated frame.

Different expressions are also in the works. Sculpting tails for the other xenos at this time and a tongue for this beast.

I have a couple head variants I would like to complete with this figure but first I want to begin work on the upper torso. You'll notice (if you've been keeping up to date with this piece) I removed the neck from the head sculpt and added it to the upper torso. The head (on a ball joint) has better range of motion this way.

Tons of detail added to the upper torso, some of which will be softened over the course of the build. Hoping to have this section complete this week and move on to the lower abdomen.

Began filling the detail to the back "pipes" of the beast. I've also begun the sculpt of the creature's hands which will be very similar to the Giger Alien hands but larger. The rough sculpt right now resemble Bugs Bunny gloves and not that of the nightmarish xenomorph but no worries, that will all change....just how I work.

Sculpting update on her highness, The Queen - ALIENS - 1:18 scale.

Sculpted the head (not the carapace "crown") of the beast over the July 4th holiday and made adjustments during the week. Working on solving the articulation question and I'm thinking a double ball socket may be the way to go. That or a magnet...not sure yet.

Next challenge will be the teeth. Good God that will be a job. Will have to sculpt the set separately so I can cast them later in clear resin.

Later I'd like to sculpt a version of the head that is tucked up into the carapace "crown".

Long term #goals...

- Nested Queen with egg sack

- AvP battle damaged Queen

Sculpt progress on the derelict corridor - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Sculpted the base of the Giger corridor today to give it more stability and filled in some gaps. Build progress on the Narcissus Shuttle - ALIEN - 1:18 scale. No fancy shots here as its late and I'm spent - here is the frame work for the overhead as you enter the lifeboat. Only part of the shuttle that reflects decorative designs seen in the Nostromo's galley. It's a separate component that when complete will help bring together all other rear components and "lock" them into place so to speak. Been pondering about the Narcissus Shuttle build I am currently working on....(ALIEN 79, 1:18 scale) and how I may introduce the exterior of the ship along with the interior. I may have found a way to do so, if only sectional and not as a whole.

I am currently working on the aft section of the ship, involving the craft's airlock. I will be building not only the interior details of the airlock door, but the exterior. Looking at it the other day, I realized that I can build out the remaining rear/upper section of the shuttle's exterior (including the upper engines) then have it build back across the top, toward the front canopy. I think it can work! Although it will only incorporate the top half of the ship...later down the road I could possibly build a structure that incorporates the bottom half of the shuttle as a reinforced base including lading gears....fun huh? :) I think so. The second of two semi-static posed figures is complete. This version depicts the creature as it appears in the deleted "crab-walker" scene from the 1979 film as Lambert and Parker make a desperate attempt to escape the Nostromo. This deleted scene however was thought comical by many, not well executed on film and revealed too much of the creature...reducing it to nothing more than a man in a rubber suit...something Ridley Scott was avoiding by using smoke and shadow.

Hand sculpted, hand painted. 1:18 scale. I borrowed resin cast parts from the original Alien figure I created a year earlier, made modifications to the torso, neck, shoulders

and legs.

When crouched or "crab walking", the figure is approx. 3" high from highest point on head to the feet. When standing, the figure is approx. 5.25" high, still not fully erect as the leg and hip joints limit the full motion (again, this was originally meant to be a static posed figure). Fortunately I was able to add several articulation points to the figure: Ball jointed neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. Vacuum formed PETG dome is removable. The tail is static but is attached using a revoltech joint and can be switched out with a longer tail option.

Original was sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, a two part epoxy. Parts were cast in resin and assembled to build this version. Used Model Masters Polly Scale and Tamiya acrylics.

"The TEETH! Fix the teeth!"

I've always planned to fix the teeth but had put it off while building the rest of the figure. Realized after the last update that it was becoming more of an issue to some...and I get it believe me! So before any further updates, I chose to revise the sculpt yesterday.

Sculpt progress on the Praetorian Xenomorph (Egg Morpher) - Aliens: Defiance - 1:18 scale. A work in progress.

A little less friendly I hope? LOL! Sculpted the entire set of teeth once again along with the rim that goes above the gum line.

The Defiance Praetorian featured teeth that resembled that of the Deacon newborn from Prometheus - human teeth (very creepy) with a protruding jaw that contained the fangs. I still plan to sculpt a version that features those teeth, just not as big as the original sculpt. Taking small steps but the head sculpt is coming along. Already have to make some adjustments to an eye that's slightly lower than the other and a bit too deep into the socket. Most of the time that would be a major pain working with cured epoxy but I don't think so this time around....famous last words LOL!

At this point with the project, I have pretty much caught up to the point where I left off with the Covenant Xenomorph, Neomorph and Defiance Praetorian - arms and legs. So expect a variety of updates, not JUST the Newborn from this point forward.

Sculpt update on the Protomorph - Alien: Covenant and the beginnings of the Newborn - Alien: Resurrection - both 1:18 scale.

Almost have the upper torso sculpt complete for the Protomorph. Need to complete sculpt detail around the shoulders and back. The lower torso and abdomen has a completed frame ready to be sculpted. A little flimsy right now but once the sculpt is complete is will give the upper body more stability.

The Newborn from Alien: Resurrection. A very early update - not much at this point but you can see where I'm going with it. Always felt sorry for this creature in the film...and it's death was HORRIBLE!!! Very hard to watch and way over the top in my opinion. Still one of my least favorite films from the ALIEN franchise but this beast was a great idea design wise in my opinion. They way it was used?...that's another story. Hope to have a handful of variants of the head sculpt - Neutral, "Mommy", "Fire BAD" and tongue LOL! Those that have seen the film know what I'm talking about.

The first of two semi-static posed figures of the creature from the 1979 film, Alien. Hand sculpted, hand painted. This version depicts the beast as it would have appeared in several promotional test shots during pre-production, the air duct scene where Captain Dallas met his end as well as a deleted scene appearing within the corridor while Parker and Lambert were making their desperate escape.

Figure is approx. 3" high from highest point on head to the feet. Articulated neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists. Vacuum formed PETG dome is removable.

Wish I had more to share with this guy - just one image. Taking this sculpt slowly as it's something that can get away from you a bit if you're not careful. Already thinking of making some adjustments. That's what makes this work fun - at least in my opinion.

Already know the figure will have multiple head sculpts: Closed mouth, open mouth and the tongue....gotta have that tongue. Different expressions as well.

Still working on the head sculpt. Corrected the eye I was talking about in my last post. Began working the back of the head and will start with the sides this week. Since the creature doesn't technically have a neck....I need to brainstorm on how to give some articulation to the area without compromising the sculpt. Not sure if that will be possible.

Revisions to one side of the head sculpt. Cleaned up some of the details, softened others and lengthened the skull a bit. Now that I have the proportions close to where I want them to be, I can fill in the void on the other side of the cranium LOL! Price paid when working with this material - a little progress at a time. The payoff is worth it though.

Next up, complete the cranium, sculpt the mouth and lower jaw....and that tongue! LOL!
