Saint Crispin at LACMA by Robb Wilson

Like many a work of art done in the Middle Ages, "Saint Crispin" (c. 1500) was by an unknown (or anonymous) artist. There is an interesting descriptioin of this as well:

"Saint Crispin and his brother Saint Crispian, noble-born shoemakers in northern France, were tortured for their Christian beliefs and beheaded in 285 A.D. Crispin, the patron saint of shoemakers, quickly became one of the most popular saints in medieval Europe."

Crispin's fame probably gained further momentum when young King Henry V of England and his army defeated the French on their home turf at Agincourt on Saint Crispin's Day in the year 1415, which Shakespeare was then able to milk it to further use in his play "Henry V" and the famous "Saint Crispin's Day Speech."

The notes say further: "Medieval tradesmen probably could not have afforded to commission a work of art as large as this limestone figure. The Catholic Church, however, often ordered images of popular saints as a form of religious propaganda."

FelixArt Museum

In the centre of the small urbanised municipality of Drogenbos (near Brussels), the FeliXart museum is situated in an oasis of 5 hectares of green, the domain that once belonged to Felix De Boeck (1895-1995), one of the pioneers of Belgian abstract art. The museum opened in 1996 and focuses on historical and contemporary avant-garde art.

В коллекции Ярославского художественного музея есть удивительная работа, документальное свидетельство того, как жили люди творческих профессий в Ленинграде 1920х-1930-х годов.

Ученица Петрова-Водкина и Павла Филонова, художница Алиса Порет входила в объединение Мастеров аналитического искусства, задачей которого было показывать социальную жизнь отдельно взятого человека. Художница работала над оформлением ленинградского Дома печати для которого, вместе с Татьяной Глебовой, она написала двухчастное панно "Нищие и беспризорники / Тюрьма". В конце 1920-х художницы вместе пробуют свои силы в качестве книжных иллюстраторов, в частности они оформляли сборники Александра Введенского, Николая Заболоцкого, Самуила Маршака.

Творческий союз Порет и Глебовой просуществовал до 1934 года и наиболее значительным их совместным детищем стало полотно "Дом в разрезе".

Это полотно, разделённое на части было найдено почти случайно среди работ Глебовой в ее квартире. После длительной реставрации картину впервые представили публике в 2003 году и сейчас она является одним из ключевых экспонатов постоянной экспозиции Ярославского художественного музея. Изображенный на картине дом действительно существует в Санкт-Петербурге на углу Московского проспекта, 16 и набережной Фонтанки, 110. С 1927 по 1933 гг. художница Татьяна Глебова жила здесь в квартире №4 у своей подруги Алисы Порет. У них в гостях бывали не только друзья-художники, но многие известные представители творческой богемы города: сюда захаживали Даниил Хармс, Александр Введенский, Михаил Зощенко, Борис Житков, Евгений Шварц, Самуил Маршак, Владимир Софроницкий, Иван Соллертинский и многие другие.

На картине мы видим реальных жильцов дома: музицирующую пианистку Марию Юдину, сестёр-художниц Марию и Магну Алфераки - одна играет на кастаньетах, другая возлежит с кошками. Сам Павел Филонов, учитель обеих художниц, бывавший у них в гостях, вздымает руку в дирижерском жесте. За обедом в кругу семьи запечатлены на картине сестра Глебовой Тамара, и ее муж Александр Авербах в пестром зеленом халате. Тут же - и собака Алисы Порет, Хокусава. А в левом верхнем углу изображены парочки, сидящие на лавках в парке: вид на Юсуповский сад открывался из окон дома Порет.

Тогда же ученицы отдали дань уважения своёму наставнику и учителю. Татьяна Глебова записывает в своём дневнике:

"Я художник. Я музыкант. Два начала боролись во мне... Я нашла Филонова, и в его методе музыкальная незримая отвлечённость соединилась со зримой изобразительной стихией. Драма с музыкой разрешилась в художестве. Но любовь к музыке не прошла, а стала моей музой в изобразительном творчестве".

Алиса Порет оставила яркие воспоминания о Павле Филонове, которые помогают нам увидеть в нём не только великого художника, но и человека:

"Несмотря на наше с Глебовой прилежание, Филонов относился к нам с недоверием, считая нас чужими - чуть не классовыми врагами. Мальчики - особенно Кибрик и Рабинович - ему доносили на нас дикие россказни. Филонов: "Товарищ Глебова, а это правда, что у вас были имения в Ярославской губернии?" – "Нет, неправда, – ответила она, был только конный завод" (смех в зале). "Товарищ Порет, а вот наши мастера были у вас дома и видели во всю комнату ковер – огромного тигра, – вы знаете, сколько он стоит? А золотой стол с инкрустациями, как в Эрмитаже?" Я с удивлением на него посмотрела. "Ну, а собака? – на то, что она ест, можно трех бедных детей прокормить!! Стыдитесь, товарищ Порет!"

Вскоре произошла неожиданная встреча. Я вышла перед работой прогулять свою милую собаку на Фонтанку, бросала ей мячик, чтоб она немного побегала, но ужас! - увидела вдали Филонова! Повернуть обратно было невозможно, а идти вперед - страшно. Я позвала ее к себе, взяла за ошейник и сказала добрым голосом: "Хокусавна, подойди и поздоровайся, он очень хороший". Она послушно пошла к нему навстречу, села перед ним и доверчиво протянула ему свою лапу. Филонов встал по-рыцарски на одно колено, поцеловал лапу и сказал: "Ладно, Порет, погуляйте с ней, - ведь вы уходите на целые дни".
