Ten years after the peak of the global financial crisis in 2008, which profoundly shook the economic systems of America and Europe and had a lasting effect on present-day life, this topical exhibition is the first to illustrate the economy’s dramatic influence on art and to make global comparisons, demonstrating these in an analysis of two separate eras. Economic phenomena in the classical modernism of the 1920s and 30s are not only explored by focusing on art from the German Weimar Republic, the Soviet Union, and the United States, but also juxtaposed with artists of the present day.

The works address and interrogate new production conditions and developments on the labor market as well as political conflicts. I got this on Memorial Day as well. My wide angle lens exaggerated the perspective, which is what I was looking for.
Duncan Rawlinson's There Will Be Signs combines contemporary photography and artificial intelligence imaging techniques to depict a luxurious architectural marvel set in a breathtaking mountain landscape. This piece draws inspiration from the popular meme "I wouldn't tell anyone I won the lottery, but there will be hints," capturing the subtle yet unmistakable signs of opulence.
Los Angeles Painter David Phillips has completed 3,000 Untitled Abstract Face Paintings. Painting #938 is the largest out of the collection. The painting comes in a free plastic archival case. The painting is signed and numbered in the bottom right hand corner of the work. The painting measures 18" x 24" and is the original acrylic on paper.

This display is titled "Sideboard With Ceres and Bacchus," done in 1874 by German artist Anton Pössenbacher. So this is far from being Medieval, though definitely influenced by that era, as this celebrates pagan gods instead of the usual bread-and-butter works derived from the Bible. The description says:
"This monumental piece is the joint creation of Arnold Böcklin, an influential painter known for his innovative interpretations of classical mythology, and Anton Pössenbacher, cabinetmaker to the Bavarian court in Munich. Here Böcklin's Ceres, goddess of agriculture, and Bacchus, god of wine, offer an overflowing cornucopia and a bowl of wine. Exhibiting stylistic compositions reminiscent of the Renaissance, the painting is aptly paired with a Renaissance-revival-style sideboard, featuring elements from classical architecture."

Татьяна Николаевна Глебова - ученица Павла Филонова, продолжившая в своем творчестве традиции классического русского авангарда.
Глебова начала свой творческий путь в Ленинграде в 1920-х годах. Училась живописи в частной студии профессора Александра Савинова (1924), затем в 1925 году перешла в мастерскую Павла Филонова. С 1926 по 1932 годы была членом группы "Мастера аналитического искусства" (МАИ). Участвовала в совместных проектах МАИ: знаменитой выставке в Доме печати и в оформлении книги "Калевала". С 1927 года работала как книжный иллюстратор в журналах "Чиж" и "Eж". Иллюстрировала стихи Даниила Хармса и Александра Введенского. Одним из ярких произведений ленинградского театрально-декорационного искусства 1930-х годов стали выполненные Татьяной Глебовой декорации к опере Вагнера «Нюрнбергские мейстерзингеры» в Малом оперном театре.
В 1941-1942 годах, живя в блокадном Ленинграде, продолжала заниматься творчеством. Ею была создана серия работ "Блокадный Ленинград", ставшая достоверным историческим свидетельством стойкости жителей осажденного города. В 1942-1945 годах находилась в эвакуации в Алма-Ате, работала на киностудии "Казахфильм".
В послевоенные годы, испытывая нужду и не имея постоянного места работы, Глебова работала в области книжной графики, выполняла заказы Всероссийской торговой палаты и Ленторгрекламы. Созданные ею образцы промграфики отличаются высоким профессионализмом и нетрадиционностью решения функциональных задач.
С 1960-х годов работала вместе с Владимиром Стерлиговым над разработкой новой пластической теории чашно-купольного пространства. Вокруг них образовался круг учеников - школа Стерлигова. В 1960-1970-е годы состоялось несколько совместных выставок Глебовой и Стерлигова. В том числе скандально известная групповая выставка 1966 года в ЛОСХе, которая была закрыта через четыре часа после начала работы из-за участия в ней "формалистов" В. В. Стерлигова и Т. Н. Глебовой. Первая персональная выставка художницы состоялась лишь в 1970 году в ее мастерской. После смерти Стерлигова развивая идеи мастера в своем творчестве и продолжая занятия с его учениками, Глебова выработала свои собственные принципы живописи: многовзорие, летающие формы, духовный цвет.

Ten years after the peak of the global financial crisis in 2008, which profoundly shook the economic systems of America and Europe and had a lasting effect on present-day life, this topical exhibition is the first to illustrate the economy’s dramatic influence on art and to make global comparisons, demonstrating these in an analysis of two separate eras. Economic phenomena in the classical modernism of the 1920s and 30s are not only explored by focusing on art from the German Weimar Republic, the Soviet Union, and the United States, but also juxtaposed with artists of the present day.

Officially untitled, by Lee Bontecou in 1931, this fish was created by a vacuum formed machine, perhaps like the Vac-U-Form thingy I had as a kid but more sophisticated here (or maybe not; as this was back in '31 it could his device could have been the prototype for the thing I would have later). This was also in the avant-garde section.
This is the Medieval art section, simply known as "European Art," because it comprises of art from Europe from other ages as well. The painting in the foreground is "Virgin and Child With Two Angels," done in 1485 by an unknown Dutch artist. In the background is "Adam and Eve in Paradise," "Christ Preaching in the Temple," "Abraham and Three Angels," and "Baptism of Christ," all done in 1500 by Jan Polack, a German painter.

''Тюрьма'' холст большого формата, была написана Татьяной Глебовой в 1927 году для Дома печати в Санкт-Петербурге, тогда называвшемся Ленинградом. Картина образовала двойную панель вместе с другой композицией под названием ''Бедные люди'' художницы Алисы Порет. Художница заверила свое авторство на обороте фотографии работы и объяснила, что когда Дом печати переехал в меньшее здание, холст был возвращен ее создателям, которые решили разрезать его пополам и каждый оставил себе свою часть.
Парадоксально, но, несмотря на существование этого документа-автографа и фотографии художницы, позирующей у холста в ее ленинградской студии, работа долгие годы приписывалась художнику Павлу Филонову. Причина этой ошибки, несомненно, кроется в стилистическом сходстве Глебовой с художником, который был ее учителем. Выдающаяся фигура русского авангарда, он был забыт на десятилетия и вновь открыт в конце прошлого века. Неповторимое аналитическое искусство Филонова и художественный язык микроскопических мазков и чрезвычайно тонких слоев цвета, с помощью которых он создал фантастический мир, населенный камнеподобными существами и призрачными формами, были подхвачены многими его учениками. Как отмечают Джон Боулт и Николетта Мислер, Филонов и его последователи сформировали свой стиль живописи из сочетания нескольких источников, а именно ''через строгое академическое обучение, через интерес к символизму, [...] через неопримитивизм и, что очень важно, через четкое признание североевропейского Возрождения''. Филонов привил своим последователям необходимость овладеть своим ремеслом и научил их ценить русских художников девятнадцатого века, а также техническую точность Кранаха и Дюрера и аллегорический мир Босха. Глебова входила в группу МАИ (Мастера аналитического искусства), созданную молодыми творцами во главе с Филоновым, и выставляла свои работы вместе с ними несколько раз, а также сотрудничала в создании различных театральных и оперных декораций.
В ''Тюрьме'', к которой есть подготовительный рисунок, художница изображает мир множественных ориентаций через различные взаимосвязанные точки зрения и показывает различные головы с видимой мускулатурой, как будто открывая нам их бесконечный процесс роста. Глебова искренне верила в теории Филонова о ''всеобщем цветении'' и, как и он, считала, что живопись должна отражать процесс роста мира, подобный процессу растений, согласно которому он постоянно активен как независимое существо.

Prision, a canvas in large format, was executed by Tatiana Glebova in 1927 for the Press House in Saint Petersburg, then called Leningrad. It formed a double panel together with another composition entitled Poor People by the painter Alisa Poret. The painter certified its authorship on the back of a photograph of the work and explained that when the Press House was moved to a smaller building the canvas was returned to its creators, who decided to cut it in half and each keep their own part.
Paradoxically, despite the existence of this autograph document and a photograph of the artist posing by the canvas in her Leningrad studio, the work was attributed to the painter Pavel Filonov for years. The reason for this error no doubt lies in Glebova’s stylistic similarities with the artist who was her master. A foremost figure in the Russian avant-gardes, he was forgotten for decades and rediscovered at the end of the last century. Filonov’s unmistakeable analytical art and artistic language of microscopic brushstrokes and extremely subtle layers of colour, with which he created a fantasy world populated by stone-like beings and ghostly forms, was followed by many of his disciples. As John Bowlt and Nicoletta Misler point out, Filonov and his followers shaped their style of painting from a combination of several sources, such as “through strict academic training, through interest in Symbolism, [...] through Neo-Primitivism and, very importantly, through clear recognition of the Northern European Renaissance.” Filonov instilled in his followers the need to master their trade and taught them to appreciate Russian painters of the nineteenth century, as well as the technical precision of Cranach and Dürer and the allegorical world of Bosch. Glebova belonged to the MAI (Mastera Analyticheskogo Iskusstva, Masters of Analytical Art) group that was established by the young creators headed by Filonov, and exhibited her work with them on several occasions as well as collaborating on various theatre and opera stage sets.

''Нюрнбергских мастеров пения'' Вагнера в Ленинграде, в Малом оперном театре (увы, шла она недолго - столь частая участь самого прекрасного!)".

I was hardly the only one going around photographing art with my camera. I also took photos of paintings, but I prefer to leave them off Flickr, as one can only reproduce what exists in a painting, whereas sculptures can be photographed from numerous angles. Anyway, people used point-and-shoot cameras like mine, or they used their iPhone cameras, or whatever smartphone camera they had. I even saw a few people with DSLRs. LACMA is more open about allowing photography in the galleries, as long as one doesn't use a flash. With the incredible images one can get at high ISOs a flash is totally unnecessary. However, there are still certain works and exhibits where photography is still not allowed. This was not one of them.

В Государственном музее истории Санкт-Петербурга хранится около 180 работ Татьяны Глебовой разных лет. Коллекция музея фактически представляет весь творческий путь художницы за исключением позднего периода.
В 1988-1989 годах музей приобрел у сестры художницы, Людмилы Глебовой, несколько произведений 1930-х годов. Из них особенно следует отметить групповой портрет, на котором художница изобразила себя и близких ей людей.
На картине фигурируют органист Исай Александрович Браудо, художники Павел Николаевич Филонов, Алиса Ивановна Порет, Соломон Моисеевич Гершов и Павел Михайлович Кондратьев, Владимир Владимирович Дмитриев и его жена Елизавета Исаевна Долуханова, балерина Вера Сергеевна Костровицкая, пианистка Мария Вениаминовна Юдина.
