A few images from yet another cloud hampered solar session.

150mm PST mod refractor (stopped down to 100mm) and QHY5III 178M used to record SER;s of AR 2822,a large prominence and a new active sunspot appearing on the NE limb. Stacked in Autostakkert 3,processed in Astrosurface and PS CS2.

Quite a lot of atmospheric turbulence today so high res views were quite poor but managed to get a full solar disk (composite of 2 frames) with Active Regions annotated.

 

A large sunspot region, AR2786 is seen.

 

The Stonyhurst Disk superimposes correct orientation, axis of rotation and position of solar magnetic poles.

Wavelet sharpening in Registax6

On 2014 October 23, we used the Coranado 60mm H-alpha solar telescope on a CGEM with a Point Grey Flea3 color CCD to capture these images from Cerritos College in Norwalk, CA. The frames span about 25 minutes of the eclipse, beginning at 15:20 PM PDT. Students in my Tuesday and Wednesday Observational Astronomy labs helped me process the movies into individual frames using AutoStakkert 2 and GIMP. The individual frames were assembled into an animation in GIMP and PS CS 5.1.

 

The sun had an enormous active region (AR 2192) at the time of the eclipse, and some small flaring activity is visible in the video. There is also a large filament that gets obscured by the moon, and many prominences, which show hydrogen gas, danced around the limb of the sun.

72ED apo used with Herschel wedge/continuum filter,Coronado SM40/BF10 filter set and Lunt CaK B1200 module to capture these views of AR2795 (closest to limb) and AR2794. SER's of various frames recorded in Sharpcap using a QHY5III 178M mono camera,stacked in Autostakkert processed in Astrosurface and PS CS2 adding false colour. The image showing sunspots close up was taken through a C9.25 sct at f/10 with Baader ND3 solar film and the 178M with I/R pass filter. SER file stacked and processed using the same principle as the full disk images.

150mm f/8 (stopped down to 100mm) PST mod for prominence and AR 2822 images,72ED with SM40/BF10 filter set for full disk. Stacking carried out in Autostakkert 3 and processed in Astrosurface and PS CS2 adding false colour.

Taken 12th May 2021.

Captured at 21:28:47 as Ganymede made first contact. Captured 1000 frames every 5 minutes for over an hour until it disappeared behind Jupiter.

Copernicus is a lunar impact crater located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum. It's diameter is 58 miles. Image was made from a 2 minute AVI video, processed in Autostakkert and Pixinsight. BlurXterminator in Pixinsight made a huge differenc to detail in this image.

For fun, took 20 shots of the moon at 200mm using a Canon 600D and a Canon F4 IS L 70-200mm Zoom lens. Processed the images in PIPP, to center and crop them and convert them to 20 tiffs, then stacked the result using Autostakkert. Pleased with the result.

A British diesel-electric locomotive seen in longwave thermal imaging.

 

Image made with a Therm-App thermal imager operated by ThermAppPlus software, post-processed in Autostakkert! 2.1.0.5 for resolution enhancement.

 

I was frankly amazed that we can read the number on the cab door and (with difficulty) "First Great Western" on the side. Paint usually has exactly the same temperature as whatever it's painted on - particularly if the surface is highly conductive, like metal - so this can only be because the lettering paint has different emissivity from the surrounding area.

After the eruption of "The Great Wall of Fire"...

 

Intended for full size viewing - there is a lot of subtle physics hiding inbetween spicule pattern and a ghostly cloud-like prom hangs near the "equator" on the left side of the image. Inset shows it with more contrast.

TIS DMK23U274 via 2x Barlow lens on Coronado PST on Celestron CG-4 with motor.

Mosaic of seven plates, each 25% of 600 frames taken at 1/200 per frame, Gain 1,79 dB.

Capturing software: TIS IC Capture.

Datasets were stacked in Autostakkert!2 with dark and bag-flat, white reference point added in PS*, images were deconvolved in AstraImage 3.0 (Richardson-Lucy algorithm, 0,3 pixels, 9 iterations) and piece-meal stitched in MS ICE**. Complete image was wavelet-sharpened in AstraImage 3.0 (1-10-15-5-1) and touched-up in PS again.

 

*One of them is still here, near the bottom left corner.

 

**MS ICE can stitch the whole set at once, but it does it rough and dirty. Stitching panel-by-panel - say 1+2, when summ+3, when 4+5+6+7, when summ+summ -creates far more better final product.

This image is just a single image , best 2,000 frames from just over 5,000 frames captured in 2.5 minutes. Captured using Firecapture V2.7, Processed using Autostakkert V3.1.4, Registax V6 and Winjupos. Equipment used, Celestron C14 Edge HD, CGEPRO Mount, ZWO ASI224MC camera, Carl Zeiss 2X Barlow and ZWO ADC.

Processing: movie was processed in Autostakkert!2. Resulting image was subjected to Richardson-Lucy deconvolution in AstraImage 3.0 (Cauchy type PSF, size 1 units, 8 iterations). Deconvolved images were stitched in Microsoft ICE.

High-pass filtering was made in Photoshop. Image was scaled down to 75% of original size to "tighten" the features and get the target value of 2,5 pixels per 3,5".

Note: I continue to think about why color cameras show better performance in solar imaging in H-alpha giving the possibility to capture prominences and the "surface" details in one exposure? My idea is that it's a result of in-camera de-Bayering process gone wrong. Green channel normally defines the overall luminostiy, but in monochromatic image, such is that is produced by H-alpha telescope there is no green and the luminocity (or should that be "luminance") is restored incorrectly to the benefit of the photographer, nonetheless :)

High resolution, 4 panel mosaic of the full moon taken with a Canon 7D through my Celestron C8. Each panel is a stack of 50 of the best images from 95 original photos of each of the 4 hemispheres of the moon. Pre-processed in PIPP for basic alignment and quality analysis, then ran a Photoshop batch action to crop, stacked in AutoStakkert! 2, Lucy-Richardson deconvolution and wavelet sharpening in AstraImage 3 SI then stitched together and post processed in Photoshop CC.

Lunar Mosaic from Florida on 01-08-2017. 9 individual panels stitched together with MS ICE. Each panel is a capture of 1,000 frames and the best 20% stacked in Autostakkert!2. Wavelets processed in Registax6. Finalized in CS5. Captured with a Celestron C6 (1500mm F10) and ZWO ASI178MC CMOS camera (6.4MP).

To the lower centre is the crater Plato (109km) with its smooth floored interior, Rimae Plato can be seen winding its way off from its North Western edge.

Below are the Montes Tenerife and Montes Recti mountain ranges as well as a number of large peaks Mons Pito and Mons Piton.

The Vallis Alpes cuts an impressive valley off to the west itself has a rille running along its length, it’s just about visible.

Was the valley caused by an asteroid impact, volcanic activity or by some other means?

A 2,000 frame video was captured and the best 75% of the frames were stacked in Autostakkert! 3, then processed in Lightroom and Fast Stone Image Viewer. I decided to leave these images monochrome rather than add false colour to them. North is 10 degrees clockwise
