For its inaugural exhibition at the new 511 Gallery at the new campus flagship, the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design, PNCA is pleased to present Gathering Autonomy: Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, the first retrospective exhibition of this print cooperative that produces graphics for activist organizations around events or actions.
Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative is a decentralized network of 30 artists committed to making print and design work that reflects a radical social, environmental, and political stance. With members working from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Justseeds operates both as a unified collaboration of similarly minded printmakers and as a loose collection of creative individuals with unique viewpoints and working methods. The Cooperative produces collective portfolios, contributes graphics to grassroots struggles for justice, builds large sculptural installations in galleries, and wheatpastes on the streets.
The exhibition will feature work by all 30 members from all over North America as well as a series of topical print portfolios issued by the group. The first of these will be Resourced, which focuses on resource extraction and climate issues, and includes 26 artist prints.
The exhibition will also incorporate PNCA’s alumni-run Creative Activism Lab which will be putting Justseeds methods into practice locally with groups like the immigration rights group, VOZ. The Creative Activism Lab, led by Carmen Denison, Lauren Heagerty, and Danny Mackin, will set up a small print studio in the 511 Gallery and run workshops with students throughout the course of the exhibition.
This exhibition has spawned several programs that are being coordinated by the Creative Activism Lab (CAL), founded in 2014 by PNCA alumni, CAL is a pseudo-institutionalized organization dedicated to exploring and advancing the intersection of art, activism, and social justice.
These programs include:

Gathering Resistance: Black Lives Matter - The Artists' Call
Mar 9, 2015 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Our second program for the exhibition Gathering Autonomy: Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, Gathering Resistance: Black Lives Matter - The Artists’ Call is a series of micro-presentations and conversation concerning what artists and designer can create to combat anti-Black police violence police.
In collaboration with Justseeds Member Jess X. Chen from Artists’ Against Police Violence, advocacy group, Don’t Shoot Portland, Black Creative Collective: Brown Hall, and Arresting Power Filmmakers, Julie Perini and Erin Yanke.
Please come join us in this dialog.
“When the language that white supremacy and anti-Blackness have given us fails, we must rise with our broken tools and forge a new visual language toward accountability and justice. Join us in the collective cry that Black Lives Matter.
Arresting Power, made by Julie Perini, Jodi Darby, and Erin Yanke provides a historical and political analysis of the role of police in contemporary society and the history of policing in the United States. It provides a framework for understanding the systems of social control in Portland, its history of exclusion laws, racial profiling, gentrification practices and policing along lines of race and class.
Black Creative Collective: Brown Hall, “are Black Artists in the Portland, OR area who are working to promote, build, sustain, and support a strong community based in creativity, love, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and getting shit done.”
Don’t Shoot Portland is a coalition of organizers who are working to engage citizens via Non Violent Direct Action. DSP promotes civic duty to help change and establish laws to criminalize the harassment, assault and murders by law enforcement of citizens. Additional advocacy includes fighting for education and housing for youth. Economic development through partnership outreach and legal support, cop watch training and Know Your Rights workshops.
Jess X. Chen a Chinese American multi-disciplinary poet, artist/activist, filmmaker, and arts educator. She is the author of chapbook, From the Earthworm To The Night. For a podular system to work, cultural and technical standards are imperative. This means that a pod’s autonomy does not extend to choices in shared standards and protocols. This kind of system needs a strong backbone that clearly articulates those standards and provides a mechanism for evolving them when necessary.
For small and large companies alike, the most advantageous standards are those that are most widely adopted, because those standards will allow you to plug in more easily to the big wide world – and the big wide world always offers more functionality, better and more cheaply than you can build it yourself. Backbone activities are about coordination and consistency, so the best way to organize them may not be podular. When it comes to language, protocols, culture and values, you don’t want variability, you want consistency. Consistency in standards is an absolute requirement if you want to enable autonomous units.
Backbone decisions can be dictated from above (for example, the way Apple dictates standards for its App Store) or agreed by consensus (for example, the way Web standards are developed). What’s most important about backbone decisions is that they focus on the connections between pods rather than within pods In other words, a pod can do what it likes internally, but when it shares or receives information it needs to speak the same language as other pods.

Fiume gained autonomy for the first time in 1719 when it was proclaimed a free port of the Holy Roman Empire in a decree issued by the Emperor Charles VI. In 1776, during the reign of the Empress Maria Theresa, the city was transferred to the Kingdom of Hungary and in 1779 gained the status of Corpus separatum within that Kingdom. The city briefly lost its autonomy in 1848 after being occupied by the Croatian ban (viceroy) Josip Jelačić, but regained it in 1868 when it rejoined the Kingdom of Hungary, again as a corpus separatum. Until 1924, Fiume existed for practical purposes as an autonomous entity with elements of statehood.
With plans to invest R$1.2 billion to build 80 new units, Walmart Brazil found a way to help women and, at the same time, address the lack of skilled labor in the civil construction industry. Walmart Brazil has committed to hiring women for construction projects who are graduates of “Women Building Autonomy,” a program developed by the city of Sao Bernardo do Campo Department of Policies for Women and the federal government. The first construction site under this new program is a Sam’s Club in Sao Paulo. Of the 200 bricklayer positions for this project, more than 50 have already been filled by women workers.

Autonomy etalk’s new corporate headquarters focuses on creating an exciting, hip, and fun space that highlights their software-based products and corporate culture. Special Attention was paid to the lobby and show center to illustrate etalk’s “Meaning Based Computing” system. In the lobby and boardroom, customers enjoy open views to the Dallas Cultural District below. The views are only interrupted by a large fish tank dividing the lobby from the boardroom. Large scale artwork adds dramatic colors to the space and provides an extra touch of fun. To balance these bright colors, a natural color palette was chosen, and texture and materials were carefully selected to create an elegant space, as evidenced by the stone flooring and wool carpeting.
Change management was a critical step in achieving success on this project. The existing employee workstations required a large footprint and included high, enclosed panels. The solution for the new space was to use a 120-degree furniture system with low panels to provide a more efficient real estate solution.
Fun and multifunctional spaces were used throughout to give employees and managers places to explore and collaborate on the next generation of new ideas. For example, a new breakroom/dining/meeting space was designed to include the opportunity for friendly Xbox competitions among employees. Autonomy etalk has found that these community spaces are bringing people together and boosting productivity.

Research Fisheries Biologists at the US Geological Survey meet with Ph.D Students and Research and Development Engineers at a local Alpena brewery to talk about their findings after many series of tests on the Great Lakes.
The overall project goal is to develop a proof of concept that autonomous underwater vehicles can conduct image surveys. This image data would then be post-processed with various neural networks to detect and record the numbers of fish and mussels of certain species. This system would then be used to determine the populations of these species across the great lakes.

In recent years, new AI technologies have increasingly been incorporated into fascinating artistic projects. The ability of AI to explore new, previously unknown perspectives of data certainly seems to enable new areas of artistic creation. But it also raises questions about possible forms of collaboration between AI and human artists. To create something, we always need the intention to create. But how can artistic intention be communicated with an AI system? How does the degree of autonomy of an AI system affect human-AI collaboration? Are less autonomous AI systems better suited for artistic tasks because they give humans more freedom?

Macau, also spelled Macao, is, along with Hong Kong, one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. It lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province to the north and facing the South China Sea to the east and south.
The territory's economy is heavily dependent on gambling and tourism but also includes manufacturing.
Macau was a Portuguese colony and both the first and last European colony in China. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century and subsequently administered the region until the handover on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operates with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.
Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the PRC's Central People's Government is responsible for the territory's defense and foreign affairs, while Macau maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, and immigration policy. Macau participates in many international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty. According to the CIA factbook, Macau has the highest life expectancy in the world.
