The Melbourne artist, Cameron Robbins is noted for his weather-powered drawing machines. The one shown here is titled Wind Section—Instrumental and was designed specifically for The Red Queen exhibition at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, Tasmania. It is a wind-Powered mechanical device that produces large pen and ink drawings on paper. The outdoor part of the machine consists of a weather vane and an anemometer (or small wind turbine) mounted on top of an 8 metre tower. Through a system of drive shafts, belts and wheels the machine uses wind speed to move the pen and wind direction to swivel the drawing board. Over the span on a week a small electric motor moves a 2.5 metre roll of paper across the board to produce a large-scale “sketch of the wind”.
One of of the drawings created by the machine is pinned to the wall behind the viewer (see the adjacent image--0249--in my Photostream.
