Bright points of starlight pierce a magenta veil of aurora light with a pulsing band of green shimmering over the city of Boulder, Colorado. While I am a few days late and a few dollars short posting this, seeing the multi-colored Aurora light was a first for me, and I was struck by how quickly the light conditions changed. Within fifteen minutes of making this image, the green had vanished and the magenta light higher in the atmosphere remained.

The auroras can move in fantastic patterns in the sky, here is a short series of a swirling aurora high above.
Just reliving the experience from January this year. One I never posted and then forgot about. This was a funny shot to take as Peter went sliding down the underside of the jetty and a race for the 'central' spot ensued. We were on our way to Sweden, drove about 3 miles and then saw this and didn't get much further. These images become more dream like every time I see them as the rain and mist here make it seem like another world.

A band of Aurora follows the lake and mountains into the distance at Kattfjordeidet, near Tromsø.
The ice we were standing on here seemed really thick but every 5-10 mins would expand and sounded like a cannon being fired. Certainly enough to make me very nervous!
Made a last minute decision to head out the door for the chance to shoot Northern Lights, I was not disappointed!
As the day had drawn to an end the slowly clearing skies revealed bright Aurora dancing on the mountain tops and retrieving tide seaweed covered rock path leading deep into the fjord.

2025 started with a bang. Relatively strong auroras could be seen from the light polluted skies of Perth City. Would've been nice to travel to a dark sky location but unfortunately I have a 4-hour drive planned for the following morning.
Just back from a 3 day tour with clients from Hong Kong, their reason for the Iceland visit was to capture the dancing aurora over the Glacier Lagoon, so we had an insomnia nigth out there couple of nights ago.
The winds have been blowing the plume from the Holuhraun volcano over the glacier to the south part, so there was a mist on the mountains, not helping with the aurora shots, but sure made some amazing soft light in the sunrise and sunsets out there.

Took this shot during a quieter spell in the aurora, so that I could increase the ISO and exposure settings, though as you can see it was still fairly active with some rays. Note also the purple fringe higher up, thought to be caused by N2+ emissions in direct sunlight.
I will be heading back out to Norway and Sweden next January and February so if anyone is interested in a trip to shoot the Auroras and wonderful landscapes of this stunning area send me a Flickr mail and I will get back to you with details.

We saw the Northern Lights once. Like ancient flames, leaping and twirling in the sky. A celestial fire from a time long forgotten. The colors shifted and swirled; red to gold, blue to violet; painting the heavens with God's celestial beauty.
Aurora Borealis.
It felt like witnessing the rhythm of the universe itself, the seamless turning of time and seasons. Summer yielding to fall, youth fading into age, the present slipping into the past.
As night drew to an end, I sat in the silence, watching as the morning star crested the mountains, heralding a new day. In that quiet moment, I understood: life is a tapestry woven from memories, each like a fragment of starlight. And like starlight, they linger for all time, enduring far beyond the moments they were born.
A backpacking trip turned into an unforgettable moment when the night sky caught fire with green. The crazy part is that we were the only backpackers in this part of Lake Superior Provincial Park. We had this unspoiled view all to ourselves. (Explored # 364) www.rossellet.com
