Attractive black-and-yellow oriole of humid tropical lowlands. Favours forest edge, plantations, semi-open areas with tall hedges and flowering trees. Often in flowering trees with other species of orioles. Plumage rather variable, but note the rather small, slightly decurved bill. Male has black head and back in Mexico and northern Central America, female has black face and greenish back. Sexes look alike in southern Central America. Not especially vocal.

Most of my Costa Rican birds have been photographed at Tico Rainforest B&B. Here, the owner, Victor has documented over 200 different species on his small 2 hectare property.

Bees are very attracted to all that yellow goody!

Poppies are flowering plants with delicate, papery petals in a variety of shapes and vibrant hues.

There are more than 70 distinct species in the poppy (papaver) genus, including opium poppies (Papaver somniferum), corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and Oriental poppies (Papaver orientale).

Poppies are an excellent addition to mixed beds, borders and cut arrangements.

They now are the sad symbol of wars past.

In this country, renowned for its biting cold and long polar nights, summer unveils unexpected scenes. The contrast between the warmth of a bright day and the starkness of the Nordic landscape gives rise to almost surreal images: even along Tromsø's coast, famous for its northern lights, one can lie in a swimsuit and bask in the sun as if on a tropical beach. The cold, silent, watches quietly—an unobtrusive spectator to this fleeting summer escape.

Passau is a delightful small town of Bavaria. The old town is worth a visit. the building on high is The Oberhaus.

BATTLE _ EAST SUSSEX - town guide info on internet.

The attractive town of Battle gets it name from the Battle of Hastings, which was fought between Harold the Saxon king and William the Conqueror in 1066. The battle was so significant it changed the course of English history. The town grew up around the Abbey of St Martin which was built by William the Conqueror after the battle. It is said that William vowed that should he win the battle he would build such an abbey. The abbey was built between 1070 and 1094, and the high altar is believed to have been placed on the spot where Harold fell. Today the Abbey ruins and the battlefield are cared for by English Heritage and are well worth a visit. The imposing Abbey gatehouse built circa 1338 can be seen as you look down the length of the High Street.

Battle has some notable Georgian buildings along its High Street. The cottages and houses near the Abbey date from around 1700. The parish church of St Mary was built in Norman times and for the most part is 12th century in construction. It offers the visitor rare 14th century wall paintings and a Norman font amongst other things. At the Northern end of the High Street can be found the Almonry which was built in 1090 and now houses the Town Council and the Battle Museum of Local History.

My son and I were playing pool in the morning at the Mercury Phu Quoc Resort & Villas in Phu Quoc, Vietnam when this banded swallowtail (Papilio demolion) suddenly appeared on the floor next to the pool table.

We're thinking he got stuck overnight inside the glass doors of the bar and was pretty exhausted when we found him as he let me get close in with the camera.

Really attractive cloud in the right place at the right time when I reached the summit of Beacon Hill via the permissive paths. I took an easier, more direct, route back home!

An attractive little rainforest resident with a bags of character. Unusually for insects some species of shield bugs brood their eggs and guard their young from predators, we don't know if this one does, but we did find him or her particularly engaging.

An attractive sawfly on chia sage (Salvia columbariae). The subject moved a lot, requiring lots of retouching. Still, it's an attractive subject on an interesting flower, so I'm pleased with the result.

It was hard to resist taking several pictures of this young woman: she seemed so clean-cut, attractive, and well dressed as she stood in the square while chatting on her cell phone.

She then marched back and forth several paces, then went into the entrance to the 72nd Street subway station, came back out again, marched around, continued chattering on her cell phone, and occasionally glanced at me with a puzzled look as I snapped several pictures. A good ten minutes went by until she finally disappeared for good into the subway station, still chattering away on her cell phone...

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.

I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...

The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

The three-story Hall of Attractive Scenery in the Panmen Scenic Area at Suzhou, China, offers views across a small lake.

An attractive and durable plant, Tradescantia pallida ’Purpurea' (Purple Heart) is a popular trailing evergreen perennial noted for its remarkable foliage of narrow, pointed, purple leaves, 2-5 in. long (5-12 cm). Arranged alternately along thick, but fragile, purple stems, the leaves are deep royal purple above, and bright violet underneath. Blooming constantly during warm weather with small clusters of bright pink, 3-petalled, pale orchid-pink flowers. 1 in. (2.5 cm), emerge at the stem tips. Tradescantia pallida is a tender perennial which makes a beautiful groundcover. Its sprawling stems root in the moist soil, to create a carpet of ground-hugging foliage. Evergreen in frost-free areas, it dies back with mild freezes, but sprouts back in spring. In colder areas, it may be grown as a bedding annual, in a container or hanging basket, or as a houseplant.
