Edinburgh Castle is a historic castle in Edinburgh, Scotland. It stands on Castle Rock, which has been occupied by humans since at least the Iron Age, although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until 1633. From the 15th century, the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognized increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programs have been carried out over the past century and a half.

As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite rising of 1745. Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1,100-year history, giving it a claim to having been "the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world". Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century when the medieval defenses were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century, which is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh, the Royal Palace, and the early 16th-century Great Hall, although the interiors have been much altered from the mid-Victorian period onwards. The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland, and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial and administrative. Some of the castle buildings house regimental museums which contribute to its presentation as a tourist attraction.

The castle, in the care of Historic Environment Scotland, is Scotland's most and the United Kingdom's second most-visited paid tourist attraction, with over 2.2 million visitors in 2019 and over 70 percent of leisure visitors to Edinburgh visiting the castle. As the backdrop to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo during the annual Edinburgh Festival, the castle has become a recognizable symbol of Edinburgh in particular and of Scotland as a whole.

It's fun playing with these...and getting an ultimate effect that can be eye catching....yet acceptable to fellow photographers.

Drakaea is a genus of 10 species in the orchid family commonly known as hammer orchids. All ten species occur only in the south-west of Western Australia. Hammer orchids are characterised by an insectoid labellum that is attached to a narrow, hinged stem, which holds it aloft. The stem can hinge only backwards, where the broadly winged column carries the pollen and stigma. Each species of hammer orchid is pollinated by a specific species of thynnid wasp. There are at least 2000 species of thynnid wasps in Australia, although only around 600 have been named so far. Thynnid wasps are unusual in that the female is flightless and mating occurs when the male carries a female away to a source of food. The labellum of the orchid resembles a female thynnid wasp in shape, colour and scent. Insect pollination involving sexual attraction is common in orchids but the interaction between the male thynnid wasp and the hammer orchid is unique in that it involves the insect trying to fly away with a part of the flower. Watch a video of the action here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yLnKfhmUzg The anatomy of hammer orchids is explained here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakaea#/media/File:Drakaea_labelle...

Venus and Mars are actually relatively minor factors for determining relationship compatibility, and are rarely “karmic indicators.” They’re good for determining attraction (by sign) but little else.

Union Pacific 4014 works through another small bend in the tracks as it pops out of the shadows albeit for a brief moment just south of the siding at Etna. The train has being working downhill along the Meadow Valley Wash and State Route 317 for the last eleven miles as it has already gone through two of the six tunnels in Rainbow Canyon as well as fair amount of small tight turns in the Canyon.

Bruges (Brugge in Flemish, Bruges in French) - BELGIUM

The biggest attraction is its historic Bruges Heritage Site by Unesco in 2000. Although largely rebuilt, the city center is one of the biggest attractions in Europe, as it keeps intact the medieval architectural structures.

Like Amsterdam and Stockholm, among others, Bruges is known as the Venice of the north because of the many canals running through the city and the beauty of them.

The impressive Eldhraun lava field is the biggest lava flow in the world. It occurred during the Laki eruption of the late 1700s. The enormous site, which is 565 square kilometres (218 sq mi), is where the Apollo 11 crew trained for their moonwalk.

The Laki eruption lasted from 1783 to 1784, and Icelanders know it as the “Skaftareldar”. Scientists consider it the most poisonous eruption occurring during historical times. It is fair to say that this was a cataclysmic event, not only for Iceland but also for Europe. In Iceland, it caused disease, crop failure, and famine. As a result, between 53% and 82% of domestic animals and 20% of the human population perished.
