2007-10 [8 cm pot]

This plant was bought from Viveiros Rosa Bacará (2007-06).

This was part of the private collection of cacti and succulents at Manor Nursery, Angmering, West Sussex. The collection was started in 1948. The nursery is now gone. The collection has been dispersed to various new locations.

2009-02 [18 cm pot]

This plant was bought from Giga Garden (2008-04). Plant 1. Now dead.

Mexico-Highlands of San Luis Potosi, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas.

This species is widespred, so shows extreme variations on rib numbers, amount of flecking etc., resulting many described variety, ssp. and forma names, but they do not appear to be wortwhile recognizing taxonomically...

This form has not flecks on the epidermis. It is very rare and its fat and blue ribs differ from the type which has shiny, smooth dark green epidermis with sharp, thin ribs.

This plant was bought from Ortegacactus (2007-09), as (synonym) Astrophytum cohauilense. Plant 1.

Mexico - Higueras, Coahuila.

Capricorne means the goats' horns.

This sp. shows great variability of the spine's lenght, colour, and shape.

The amount of white flecking of the epidermis is also very variable.

This variability have given rise to a large number of named species and varieties.

Needs very open compost with limestone grits.

Frost Toler. Hardy to -6 C.

Min.Avg.Temp. 10 C.

Sun Exposure: Light shade.

Pianta globosa, solitaria, del diametro di 6-10 cm., alta 4-8 cm., grigio verde scuro con numerosi punti bianchi (tricomi), che in realtà sono ciuffi di peli cortissimi. Per lo più presenta otto costolature arrotondate, separate da solchi appena accennati. Le appariscenti areole, disposte lungo le coste, sono bianche, lanose, prive di spine. Fioritura diurna, in estate. I fiori sono gialli, con gola rossa, e spuntano dalle areole in prossimità dell'apice. Originaria del Messico e degli U.S.A. (Texas).

Lugar de origen: México, región montañosa del centro.

 

Descripción: La especie, conocida popularmente como birrete de obispo, es de tallo globular, deprimido en el apice, mide entre 10 y 25 cm. de diametro y puede presentarse un tanto columnar cuando el ejemplar es adulto. Es de color verde aunque esta cubierto de manera abundante por escamosidades blancas muy pequeñas que le confieren un aspecto blanco grisaceo. Las costillas habitualmente son cinco, aunque también existen formas de 4 a 8 costillas, muy prominentes y agudas. Las aréolas son muy pequeñas y estan muy juntas. Son completamente inermes y estan cubiertas generalmente de pelos parduscos. Las flores miden alrededor de 6 cm. de diametro y son de color amarillo. Existen diversas variedades entre ellas, quadricostatum, con sólo 4 costillas y nudum, de tallo color verde, sin restos de escamas.

 

Consejos de cultivo: La planta no produce vastagos, por lo que la multiplicación debe realizarse a través de semillas, aunque si se corta la parte superior de los ejemplares de mayor edad, los nuevos retoños aparecen en el tallo. Requiere exposición a pleno sol y sustrato poroso.
