Dès le milieu du Ier s. ap. J-C., Argentomagus se dote d'un théâtre où sa population peut assister aux ludi sacenici, aux jeux scéniques.
Un premier théâtre
Au Ier s., c'est le ballet tragique de la pantomime et le rire du mime qui règnent sur les scènes romaines, ravissant le public et honorant les dieux. Car c'est toujours à l'occasion d'une fête religieuse que l'on se rassemble au théâtre et que le spectacle est donné. Ce patronage divin se manifeste à l'intérieur de l'édifice par la présence d'autels ou de statues et souvent à l'extérieur, par la construction d'un temple d'où le dieu contemple les jeux qui se déroulent sous ses yeux.
En construisant un théâtre maçonné, Argentomagus affirmait sa primauté à l'intérieur du réseau des agglomérations secondaires bituriges. Le premier théâtre correspond au moment où les notables gallo-romains passaient commande d'édifices en pierre à des architectes qui tentaient d'adapter les plans romains au budget des petites villes et aux besoins du public. La première version du monument ne présentait qu'un seul mur maçonné. A l'intérieur, des gradins en bois s'alignaient sur la pente naturelle du coteau.
Trop petit, on construisit un second mur d'enceinte, ce qui permit de gagner en haut cinq gradins. C'est à la fin du Ier s. que la ville équipa son théâtre de gradins en pierre.
Un nouveau théâtre
Dans les années 150, les notables d'Argentomagus furent confrontés à un grave problème. Leur théâtre était en mauvais état. Le théâtre trop petit ne pouvait accueillir toute la population de la ville. Les notables prirent la décision de démolir le théâtre et d'en reconstruire un autre, plus grand.
S'ouvre alors l'un des plus grands chantiers que la ville ait connu : il faut d'abord démonter le premier théâtre, récupérer tous les blocs (seuils, gradins, marches) qui serviront dans le nouveau bâtiment et araser les murs. Il faut ensuite recreuser la partie inférieure de la pente et exhausser sur des remblais de terre la partie supérieure, afin d'augmenter le nombre des gradins et d'améliorer les conditions de visibilité. Il faut enfin élever les murs, construire les voûtes des passages rayonnants, mettre en place les gradins de la cavea et planter la scène et son décor.
Argentomagus possède désormais un théâtre de 85 m de diamètre, rythmé par des allées rayonnantes et concentriques qui répartissent rapidement le public.
Les notables disposent d'un gradin d'honneur qui s'appuie au mur de l'orchestra. De part et d'autre de la scène, leur sont réservées de grandes entrées, accessibles également aux spectateurs des premiers rangs de la cavea, et le prêtre ou l'éditeur qui préside aux ludi scaenici est installé sur une estrade à travers la cavea, le plan du nouvel édifice permet de respecter la hiérarchie entre les différentes catégories sociales et de souligner l'importance du groupe des notables.
Ainsi, le nouveau théâtre d'Argentomagus a beaucoup servi au long du IIe s., un peu moins pendant le IIIe s. où la Gaule, comme les autres régions de l'empire, connut de graves difficultés économiques.
L'amphithéâtre
Construit enfin totalement en pierre, le théâtre d'Argentomagus figurait désormais en bonne position sur la carte des édifices de spectacle de la cité des Bituriges Cubes.
Le nouveau monument fut implanté dans le tissu urbain, à l'articulation entre le noyau ancien de l'oppidum et la zone d'extension de l'agglomération gallo-romaine. L'édifice n'a jamais fait l'objet de fouilles; seuls deux de ses murs élevés dans un appareil à moellons quadrangulaires caractéristique du IIe s., ont été mis au jour. Un relevé des courbes de niveau donne au grand axe une longueur de 80 à 100 m et suggère que l'édifice présentait une orientation nord-est/sud-ouest.

I photographed the Conti Chivalry as she passed through the mouth of the Swan River heading into the Fremantle Inner Harbour on 30 April 2021. Her last port of call was Adelaide and her next port of call is Singapore. She was assisted by four tugs, Svitzer Albatross and Svitzer Eagle Svitzer Falcon and Svitzer Redhead most likely due to both her size and the tide. I did notice one of the tugs was working hard to keep her speed down.
I finally took the tree down the other day and Floydd was right there to help me sort out all the ornaments!

After waiting for SCT’s 3PM9 to clear the block, empty Aurizon Iron Ore service 6911S from Whyalla to Wirrida gains momentum through the popular photography spot of Yorkey’s Crossing with GWU012/GWA007 up front and GWA004/GWU014 at the rear on Thursday the 10th of November 2022.
These Iron Ore trains usually run 3 times a week to the Balloon loop at Wirrida before returning to Whyalla to export the loading overseas. The length and weight of the train as well as the network infrastructure arrangements require it to run with Distributed Power Units (DPU) to assist the train up gradients and to prevent running the locomotives around at Spencer Jct after each trip both ways. DPU running in South Australia isn’t very common and remains exclusive to this train, however it can be seen daily on the Coal networks in the Eastern states.

According to my notes, this is actually the hind end of an eastbound train heading for Cajon Pass at Verdemont, CA. An interesting combination of an SD45-2 and GP35 are lending their muscle to the task.

A horned puffin walking up a steep cliff with a little assist from its wings. The horns are small fleshy spikes that extend above the eyes of breeding adults.
