The Papal Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Assisi, a town of Umbria region in central Italy, where Saint Francis was born and died. The basilica is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy. With its accompanying friary, Sacro Convento, the basilica is a distinctive landmark to those approaching Assisi. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
The basilica, which was begun in 1228, is built into the side of a hill and comprises two churches known as the Upper Church and the Lower Church, and a crypt where the remains of the saint are interred. The interior of the Upper Church is an important early example of the Gothic style in Italy. The Upper and Lower Churches are decorated with frescoes by numerous late medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan schools, and include works by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti and possibly Pietro Cavallini. The range and quality of the works gives the basilica a unique importance in demonstrating the development of Italian art of this period.

The town is dominated by two medieval castles. The larger, called Rocca Maggiore, is a massive presence meant to intimidate the people of the town: it was built by Cardinal Albornoz (1367) and expanded by popes Pius II (polygonal tower, 1458) and Paul III (the cylindrical bastion near the entrance, 1535-1538). The smaller of the two was built in Roman era: it has been only partially reserved, a small portion and three towers being open to the public.
Assisi was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in the town in 1208, and St. Clare (Chiara d'Offreducci), the founder of the Poor Sisters, which later became the Order of Poor Clares after her death.

Assisi is a hill town in Umbria, in central Italy. It is the birthplace of St. Francis (1181-1226), one of the patron saints of Italy. The Basilica of San Francesco is an imposing 2-level church consecrated in 1253. The 13th-century frescoes depicting the life of Saint Francis have been attributed, among others, to Giotto and Cimabue. The crypt houses the stone sarcophagus of the saint.
Along the quiet narrow streets of Assisi there are many cafes and bakeries. It was a good way to start the morning with a cup of coffee and one of these fantastic cannolis. The fresh air, blue sky, and people watching was a good way to start our stay Tuscany, Italy.

Beim heiligen Franz haben wir auch vorbeigeschaut. Da es ein Sonntag war, gab es keine Führungen, was ein bisschen schade war.
