Alta Gracia, Dominican Republic
Workers at the Alta Gracia factory, set up as a "fair wage" factory recently by Knights Apparel, which is one of the largest suppliers of t-shirts and sweatshirts to colleges in the US. This factory is paying workers a living wage, about 3.5 times more than they are paid in other factories clothing factories in the DR.
The clothes are sold at a slightly higher price with tags explaining to customers that Alta Gracia (also the name of the clothing line) pays the workers more.

For the Assignment 52 group challenge- depict this common saying. "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". Meaning: that it is better to stick with something you already have, rather than pursuing something you may never get. Or in dog speak- Keep the ball you have because the others might just be a tease :-)
Big pile of fiber samples, wpi samples, sample skeins, swatches and leftovers. All of this (but the remnant yarncakes) have been mounted in my portfolio and shipped off for marking. On to the next unit: silk.
This is a big unit (exotic fibers) for year 4 of the OHS Spinning Certificate program (handspinning).

Take a picture of the sun. Just a picture of the sun, nothing extra or fancy. Please make sure the sun is visible in the photo, we won't accept reflections of the sun or photos where the sun is not visible. Please be careful not to look directly at the sun through your camera's viewfinder; looking directly at the sun could damage your eyes. If you need to, just point the camera towards the sun and shoot the photo.
I participated in Ginger Unzueta's online workshop, everyday beauty. Our final assignment was to capture a planned event. We had just been gifted some basket ball singlets and thought it would be perfect to photograph them trying them out.
I would consider myself a beginner with photo editing, because before this course I had only used photo editing apps on my phone to add filters and adjust things like brightness and contrast. For this assignment, I was using Photoshop CC, and I experimented with some features I had no experience with. In this edit, I first cropped the photo and used the straighten tool. Then, I increased the brightness using an adjustment layer, but I used a layer mask to make the sky stay the same brightness. After that, I did the biggest part of the process, which was removing the crane that was above the buildings. For this step, I made a new layer and used a combination of the spot healing brush and the healing brush. To keep the tops of the buildings even, I used the rectangular marquee tool to select the building I was editing around, and inverted the selection so that the spot healing brush would affect everything but the building (which was now excluded from the selection). Once I was mostly satisfied with the result, I moved on and used a selective color adjustment layer, and made all the yellow tones in the picture have more magenta and black and less cyan, which created a more orange/pink sunset. I also increased the vibrance and saturation with an adjustment layer to make the sunset more colorful. I think that the edits I did made the photograph more vibrant and that removing the crane helped bring the focus onto the space needle, rather than its surroundings.
The assignment for this project was to create a brochure and two other pieces of collateral highlighting the 13 deadly sins of graphic design aimed at students and professors at a collegiate level. I jokingly came up with the idea of "Type Club" a play on "Fight Club." But then it started growing on me and I went with it!

My kitchen
This was a challenging assignment to say the least. I found myself shooting 3 rolls of film for negative space assignment and got lost in the moment. after shooting 35 pictures I had one shot left. I spent about 2 hours at a specific location shooting various negative spaces, but something caught my eye just as I was about to leave. I was getting in my car and I noticed these trees in the background. It's funny how you totally miss something that was right in front of you the whole time. The thing I really find interesting about the photo is the way I captured that sunbeam hitting the left tree. There is a perfect sunlit circle and the exposure was dead on. When shooting I had a difficult time because of all the dark shadows and shade all around the trees. This was a fun assignment and now it really makes me more aware of all the negative space in photos. We are learning to see more with exercises in Right vs Left brain. I have started to really open my eyes up while out and about and have found so many wonderful locations. I just need to get out and shoot!
I shot this photo for an assignment using different compositional elements. As a part of my marketing job, I'm often asked to go snap some photos of different events going on. This one was during a tour of a new building in construction for Interior Design students at the Centre for Technology in Kelowna.
Sadly, there's a pole coming out of the guys head, (there were poles everywhere!) but I only had a second to take this picture while the two people were lined up like that.
Assignment-4: Experiences in the Hamlet.

So today being Mother's Day I thought I'd do a theme along those lines... The china is the pattern we received at our wedding, and the silverware is a child's set, so the idea here is the children being embraced by the marriage. The tulip is just because it's pretty. LOL I also liked playing with the contrasting textures: the smooth china and shiny silverware, against the organic flower and bamboo placemat. Slight crop and 60% saturation reduction in PSE7.
Taken for the Assignment 52 challenge- "Using lines for composition"
Once I started looking for lines, I couldn't stop! I posted several to my stream. This photo of these headstones and the double line of pines were my favorites (but it was a hard decision!)
I tried this in both color and B/W and while I'm a big fan of color, I liked the way the b/w eliminated the distracting colors and accentuated the lines.
Had to put a couple more in the comments. :-)
Today I took the camera into Sleaford and visited the National Centre for Craft & Design, formerly known as The Hub.
