this is a photo of the second part of a photo class assignment i had to present this week. for the assignment we were to make a walk and then also make an intervention of some sort in the environment. for inspiration we were introduced to the work of Richard Long and other walking artists.

for my walk and intervention i went to our property on the north end of Vancouver Island. a few weeks ago there was a landslide in the area and the land mass on the edge of our property and to the south of it underwent a drastic change. i don't have before photographs but a creek that could hardly be seen because of forest and thick undergrowth was now a 100 ft wide open area with trees down everywhere. a pullout between the road and the ocean that could easily fit 5 trucks was now completely gone.

i walked and took photographs of the landslide clean up and then went into the forest nearby and cleared a small area, set out bowls, filled them with earth and pine cones and then lit incense. then i took the bowls of ashes and earth down to the creek and submerged them in the creek.

i've posted each of the photos in this work on my website here

Amid the morning sun, a bumblebee hovers over a vibrant flower. Drawn to the bloom's nectar, it pauses at the edge of delicate petals—a boundary, visible yet inviting. The flower, open and ready, offers sweetness to the bee, yet remains firmly rooted in place, respecting its own boundaries by standing still, waiting. The bee dips closer, knowing its role in the exchange, careful not to take too much, to disrupt the gentle petals. Each understands an unspoken limit, a balanced dance between need and offering. In this moment, boundaries become bridges, creating harmony between giver and receiver.

Point of the assignment was to summon another sense besides visual, so I tried to go with taste. This has more of the "paradoxal" element I think my professor was looking for. I wanted to make something sweet look gross I guess.

So, first assignment on the Strobist L102 Class...

Set up an object and move the light around to see how it "hits" the object.

Experimenting for the assignment with the outdoors and thought I would do something different. I'm really just learning how to manipulate f/stop and shutter speed to take the picture that I want to and this assignment taught me a lot about the different ratios.

My new guitar...

I took this picture just to show off my new guitar. I also wanted to play around with a 'light thru the blinds' shot that I saw in a lot of the 'noir' submissions from the Lighting 102 assignment. After seeing the finished shot it occurred to me that it might make a reasonable submission for the 'Cross, Balanace, Sculpt' assignment as well... although I've got more Balance and Sculpt than Cross... but oh well :)

Strobist info: Metz 45 outside shooting in thru the blinds at 1/4 power. Viv 285hv camera left (almost even with subject) shooting at 1/2 power thru a Rogue grid (25 degrees).

Environmental portraits

Assignment 52: One dominant color

Done for Photography Critique Assignments. Subject: Low Key

What it Took: I have usually preferred full tonal pictures and have never before attempted a low key photo (on purpose) . So I view some of the examples and the tutorials and went to work

A single light source. Why not my computer which my wife claims sees my face more than she does And if the computer why not "Photography Critique Assignments"?

I set the tripod very close to me and used a wide angle lens. The lens was not more than 18 inches from the back of my head. I turned of the lights in the room. I set the camera on Aperture priority and the EV compensation to -1.0.

I used a tripod and the self-timer. I had used this self-timer so infrequently in the past that it took me a dozen tries to get it figured out.

On the computer I removed some extraneous light coming in from the left of the computer and adjusted the curves. The computer screen still looked to bright so I isolated in and adjusted the levels selectively. I had to also add some brightness and contrast to my head.

Years ago, on a hike through Eastern Oregon's Strawberry Mountains, the woman leading our little group of (not very fit and kinda scared) hikers taught us a little song:

"Be careful what you lean on/It may not hold you up/Or lean freely/And be prepared to make an art of falling."

Most of my adult life, I've made an art of jumping off figurative cliffs without a parachute.

I've quit jobs - and entire careers - without any idea what would come next. I've moved halfway across a continent to pursue a new opportunity that scared the hell out of me. I've dived into chances for love without knowing whether there would be any future in it, and lived through the consequences, even when they ripped my heart apart.

And now, standing on the brink of old age, not knowing what the future may bring ... I can honestly say I don't regret a thing.

The clothes are sold at a slightly higher price with tags explaining to customers that Alta Gracia (also the name of the clothing line) pays the workers more.

I'm not really sure what I was thinking.

"Photo assignments from two travel guides, plus my day job," I said to myself. "I'll be spread a little thin, but I can hack it for a month, no problem."

Spread a little thin, that is, in much the same way that the ocean is a little wet. Five weeks later, I'm completely fried. Luckily, the last two shoots have been scheduled and by the end of the week I'll have everything submitted, more or less on time. But I now have a new appreciation for just how demanding it can be, not just physically (although when your main mode of transportation is your own two feet, it certainly is that), but also creatively. It's a very different thing to try to find unique shots when you're working from a set list, as opposed to just shooting whatever strikes your fancy. Above all, the hardest part has been to keep my left-brain software job going while trying to think creatively about photos. There's a reason why the best photographers don't have day jobs.

Which isn't to say I haven't enjoyed it immensely...I was also looking at this as a test to see if my love for photography was just a passing infatuation, or if it would stand up to a serious test. The fact that I've taken over 8,000 photos in the past month and still enjoy the feel of my camera in my hand seems like a good sign to me.

On Saturday morning, at the height of the deadline crunch, I was running from place to place to hunt down the last shots when I turned the corner and saw this plaza. Completely empty, with a single chair illuminated by a beam of sunlight, it seemed like a oasis of calm, quietly beckoning me to sit and stay awhile. I stopped in my tracks for a moment, listening to the birds overhead and realizing that the noises of the city had faded away.

Breathe. Point. Shoot. Breathe.

It only lasted a few moments, but that short little Zen interlude helped me refocus and push on through the rest of the day. When I finally fell into bed at 3am my body was aching and my brain exhausted, but I felt like I had accomplished something, and been given a little gift along the way.

I don't know what I was thinking, signing myself up for something like this. But I do know that I would do it every day if I could.

Active Assignment Weekly 30 May - 6 June: Album cover art

Debut single cover art for the harmonica quintet known as Demonic Harmony.

WIT: A wooden mask against my wall, shot it with a strobe to the right with a red and a yellow gel. edit in gimp was just to reverse the mask and a slight blend.

Assignment 52: "Fine Art" -- Think about what would you might hang on your wall

This was a very interesting question to think about, particularly since I'm likely to be consolidating the art that now hangs in two houses into one house -- the house that's mostly windows. I didn't really come up with any useful answers, but enjoyed trying to define what aspects make me want to keep looking at an image, even on a daily basis, & what I prefer, as far as effect on my mood & outlook from the things that surround me.

The light in this one is so serene -- I'm sure it would make me happy if it hung on my wall. Though I think I do prefer a little more edginess for things I'd keep on the wall.
