Always the way. This morning, still trying to come up with shot, this evening have to narrow it down from over 100! *eye roll* I need to learn to not take so many photos. Now I have to choose...... feel free to nominate you fav :) Cheers!

This one is slightly out of focus I think(or I've had one too many wines), the breeze must have turned it just as I clicked.

Active Assignment Weekly:

en•joy•ment

–noun

1. the act of enjoying.

2. the possession, use, or occupancy of anything with satisfaction or pleasure

3. a particular form or source of pleasure

I thought it might be nice to have a reasonably broad assignment this week so let’s all attempt to create a photograph that represents enjoyment. It could be absolutely anything that represents something you personally enjoy (permitted by the terms of the group of course!).

Restriction

The photo should convey something that you personally enjoy. So posting a photo of someone else enjoying an ice cream would be no good if you don’t also enjoy eating ice cream. Posting a photo of a pet or child playing would be fine as we can assume you enjoy playing with them. It might be nice to learn a little something that we may not already know about you from your photograph. :)

Dare

To make some kind of change to the shot during post processing that other members of the group may not be able to easily identify. Please indicate if you have taken on the dare when posting your photo so other members will know if they should try to guess what you have changed.

Examples

Please feel free to add any images which you think might help other members with inspiration.

WIT: There's something completely relaxing and satisfying in developing and printing silver geletin prints for me. That said, I really haven't done much lately. This took about an hour of cleaning out the darkroom and setting up trays and moving the light closer. I set up the tripod and took a few exposures on manual to find the right combination, then placed the photo in the tray and shot it with this combination (F/2.8, 0.5 sec exposure, ISO 800). CS4 curves for contrast which actually took out the timer in the foreground, cloned out a distracting reflection, slight rotation, sharpen, resize.

I did do one other step in post processing that I've been finding I like, though it isn't very obvious in this shot.

Ashley's assignment on ritual. Peyton and I switched speech patterns. (In the documentation, both Eric and Ashley interrupted us, so please ignore the middle bit).

Active Assignment Weekly: Aug 29-Sep 5 Time

With fall coming upon the northern hemisphere and spring just around the corner for those down south there is a sense of "where has the time gone?" For this assignment you are to capture an image that conveys time. This could be done through a literal approach of a clock, or perhaps something a bit more interpretive such as showing that time has moved by.

Dare: Fill the frame with your subject.

Restriction: Keep the post processing to a minimum.

WIT: Evening stroll along the lakeshore taken during our Labor Day camping trip. Thought that the long time sitting of this rescue boat made a nice subject for the passing of time. Shot at F/2.8, 1/100 sec, ISO 400. CS4 processing included curves for contrast, slight noise reduction, resize, sharpen.

Assignment 52 -- Painting with light

Visions of the Green Fairy were said to come to those who drank quantities. I haven't seen the Fairy yet myself. This light painting was done with the flame of a fireplace lighter.

Jump over this this very nice bench 5 times.... No thank you ;)

I am most certainly a novice as best. Totally new to the digital world and the editing tools. I used Pixlr for this assignment and I wanted to give Layers a go. I first had to crop Brownie out of one image and merge her into the landscape image (I used the Lasso function). In the photo of Brownie the sun was almost directly overhead so I inverted the photo so she appears to be looking toward the sun breaking through the clouds in the landscape photo. I had to burn sections of the top of her head and the back of her right ear to darken the areas making the lighting look as if it was more in front rather than on top of her head. I used the Curves function to darken the clouds behind her to draw the focus more to the light. Both images we converted to black & white because I thought it made the image more striking. I attempted to use the Logan filter after that but it just seemed to be too much so I removed it. Mild adjustments were made in the lighting but not too much. Of the edits I made I think the Layers effects and the burning to change the lighting on her head really give the photo some personality.

Active Assignment Weekly: 26 Feb - 5 Mar 2018: Old Photographs

Assignment: Create an "old" photograph. Subject matter is up to you--portraits, architecture, landscape--whatever you like, as long as the finished product looks like a photo that was taken many years ago. How many years ago is up to you, but let's say anything from the 1970's back to the dawn of photography.

Dare:

Be creative with how you go about aging your photo. If you don't have access to an editing program, or even if you're just feeling adventurous, try some non-computer-based "post processing."

Restriction :

No plain B&W - your photo must somehow include colour ( think sepia, yellowed with age, stains, "re-coloured" etc.) Watch out for things that don't belong; for example, a 1920's portrait where the subject is wearing a digital watch.

WIT: The gardens where I work, used Colour Efex Pro to apply an old camera style which yellowed the photo, and added a border. Looks old to me as it reminds me of the poorer composition skills I had in the 1970's!

Assignment: "Homelife: Chores" March 30 - April 13

Checking and making sure the garbage got taken out. We missed it the last two weeks and now it's full of dirty diapers... Eeeww...

As we announced yesterday, our new assignment reflects the work of Vivian Maier. Please post your (new!) photos between Feb 1 - 22 and use the hashtag #vivianmaierassignment.

JUNKYARD TREASURES: Maier was fascinated by what others might consider junk. So its ironic that her work was only discovered when John Maloof bought a box of photos at a flea market auction. Go find that hidden treasure that is usually overlooked - be it at the bottom of a bin, a local flea market or an estate sale.

I’M SORT OF A SPY (x2): Meander through the streets of your hometown and look - really LOOK. What catches your eye? An interesting outfit or posture? A group of people waiting for a bus? A couple holding hands at the street light? The legs of mother and child in a shop? We’re sure you’ll come up with an excellent shot. No wait - make that two! It’s the VM classic, after all.

IN THE NEWS: Vivian Maier was fascinated by the news - especially when they highlighted the folly of humanity. She also horded newspapers. For this assignment, set up a photo that has a newspaper or headline of sorts in it.

MANGLED MANNEQUIN: Next time you go window-shopping ignore the clothes and look at the mannequins. Lop-sided? Disassembled? Naked? You’ve got your shot.

MIRROR MIRROR: The classic VM selfie. Come on, we couldn’t do a Vivian Maier assignment and not have this one in there. Find something shiny and let us see a reflection of you and your camera. Shadow and smile optional.

BONUS ASSIGNMENT: A picture that no one will see: Take it, have it developed, don’t show it to anyone. Stash it away in a box. Post a photo of the box.

Please be kind and respectful when doing street photography. Vivian Maier was not just an exceptional photographer - she has also been described as “imposing and rude”. Don’t be inspired by that.

Remember: Only post new (mobile) photos, and only tag one per assignment. You can tag your outtakes with #vivianmaierassignment_outtake, though.

By the way - We’re not checking if you finish all 6 assignments, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t finish. The main thing is to start playing and have fun!

I asked some people to shoot something for my first assignment but no one had any time so I decided to do it on my own. In my opinion "doing something" doesn't always have to involve a lot of action. Because of this I chose to shoot one of the activities I really used to do pretty often. This is waht a perfect evening would have looked like until recently. Hopefully I will be able to get back into reading again soon.

This shot includes a book cover which might insult some people. For those people I have to say that this is not a book that is glorifying Nazis but it is about how the world would look like if the Nazis would have won WWII (The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick). I really love to read about strongly polarising and controversial topics which you have to think about and I also enjoy a good glass of wine from time to time.

For this is a project I had to design graphics for an olive oil company based out of Georgia. My group had to develop the packaging and graphics. We selected a square glass bottle and I developed the graphics.

I used an oak tree (because its Georgia's state tree) that wraps around the bottle. The idea is to make it flow around the bottle. I used the company's logo and brand colors. The gray section is the front panel of the bottle.

Active Assignment Weekly: June 27 - July 4: Body Parts

Your assignment is to photograph body parts. Keep the props, or clothing to a minimum and really focus in on a body part. With that said PLEASE remember the group rules and keep it clean.

Restriction: No full face or full body shots, and as stated before no naughty areas.

WIT: Halogen reading light lying on the bed.. F/2.8, 1/20 sec. ISO 1600. CS4 curves for high contrast, vibrance reduction, dark blue filter to take out some of the bright orange-ness, noise reduction, gaussian blur, resize. View on black..

Assignment 2 - Umbrella Specular Portrait

430EX in shoot-thru umbrella to camera right at 1/16 power. Shot in manual. Triggered with an ST-E2.

This assignment was fun and allowed for more creativity. My original plan was to try and make the bottle blend into the ski lift tower. However, the lighting at the top of the mountain didn't allow for me to set this angle up (too much lens flare). Instead I looked for good lighting and set up my bottle and flash.

This photo was shot during sunset on top of Bolton Valley in Vermont. I used a long lens 70-200 to help blur the background to a nice blend of colors. I then placed my flash on the ground (right hand side of the bottle) and laid flat on the ground to take this photo.

Here are the specs for my photo:

1/350s @2.8

ISO 200

Focal Length 108mm

No tripod

1 Off camera Flash (Canon 550EX)

PCNW Light Control assignment 1.

The essence of light. Produce one image that speaks to the essence of light as you see it.

I'm taking a 35mm black and white photography course at my Uni this semester and my teacher is kind enough to scan the work that we hand in.

Here are the two photos I chose to develop for my landscape, or "space" assignment.
