The brief for PwDP Assignment Five is, apparently, oriented towards photojournalism - photograph an event and market the results to relevant publications. This series is my own response. The background is in my blog, here - stansocapwdp.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Assignment Five.
It relates to a major sporting 'event' of the summer - The Ashes Test Series of cricket matches between England & Australia - but also to my research of contemporary still life photography for Assignment Four; questions around the way photographers might respond to image-saturation in the digital/internet world; and maybe questions around the 'truth' of photographic images. The intended outcome is a series of large prints but, hopefully, these digital versions provide some sense of what is intended.
Assignment 52: "Fine Art" -- Think about what would you might hang on your wall
This was a very interesting question to think about, particularly since I'm likely to be consolidating the art that now hangs in two houses into one house -- the house that's mostly windows. I didn't really come up with any useful answers, but enjoyed trying to define what aspects make me want to keep looking at an image, even on a daily basis, & what I prefer, as far as effect on my mood & outlook from the things that surround me.
The light in this one is so serene -- I'm sure it would make me happy if it hung on my wall. Though I think I do prefer a little more edginess for things I'd keep on the wall.
Assignment 52 - Silhouettes
I'm fortunate to be in Georgia this week for this assignment, with fabulous light & horizons for silhouette shots. Since this is a trip to visit Po's son, Hibou, at the field trial pro's where he's in training, I'm indulging in a bunch of dog silhouettes. Here's yet another:

I made this assignment sort of a project for me. My mom was here staying in our guestroom/office so I had more time with my camera (thanks, Mama!) but less time to edit. So cue a whole bunch of taking pictures of things that look like letters! When Mama went home, I loaded them all and got to work.
The post work was a ton of fun. I created a template for what I wanted my final product to look like with a white background and black boxes for the letters. As I chose which of each letter I liked best, I edited it and added it to my template. Repeat 25 times and you have my result. :) All the pictures were taken in my backyard, where I'm lucky enough to have a ton of toys, trees, bushes, fences and clouds. And a huge kudos to my girl for wandering around and looking for letters with me and even becoming the letter I.
Active Assignment Weekly: 21-28 May 2018: In One Place
Spec: PIck a spot, and shoot 25 pictures (not in burst mode). You cannot move your feet once you've chosen your spot, but you can crouch, stretch, or move your body on any way to get the shot. It's a photographer's version of the game Twister, so I guess yoga experts may have an advantage here, haha! Try to shoot different subjects, or use different angles or lenses to shoot. Once you have your 25 shots, pick the best 2 and upload for the assignment. Restrictions: None, except as noted in the assignment. Dare: Pick a place indoors to take your pictures.
WIT: There is a nice Poinsettia tree in the grounds of our office base. Cropped and a small contrast tweak. One view up and one view of the ground with dead Poinsettia leaves.

For my birthday I recently received the book Learning To Love You More by Harrell Fletcher and Miranda July. It is a book of artistic assignments that you can turn to if your creative well has run dry and you would rather someone just tell you what to do. That in itself can be a particularly freeing experience.
The catalyst for this image is Assignment 55: Photograph a Significant Outfit. Although the exact instructions call for you to photograph what you were wearing during a significant moment in your life, I tend to think of these clothes as a time capsule which immediately teleports me back to 1978. Plus learning to do The Hustle just doesn't qualify as a significant moment! ;-)
To complete the ensemble you must visualize a few items that I've lost along the way:
1. Puka shell necklace
2. Brown patent leather boots (you know, the ones that zip up the side)
For those of you who weren't born yet (or still in diapers) in 1978, Jimmy Carter was president, the movie Saturday Night Fever was a box office smash, the Bee Gees dominated the pop air waves and everyone was deceived into thinking that John Travolta was an excellent dancer... I guess a some things never change!
Don't ask me why I still keep these clothes tucked away in the back of my closet. Even if I could lose enough weight to fit into them again, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing them in public. I guess it's just something I bring out every few years to look at when I need a good laugh. Also, the great thing about polyester is that they look just as good today as they day I bought them!
When we disconnect from the source of the conveniences in our lives, whether they are as simple as switching on a light or as complex as bringing food to table, we lose a little bit of our appreciation for the amazing complexity of the world.
Nothing special about this one; I was playing with the 50 mm lens and depth of field.
Assignment - Light : This is the second in a series of assignments that I am working on with my friend Colorblindpicasso. We started a monthly photographic assignment to challenge ourselves to become better photographers, both technically and artistically. In this case, he's got me beat. Not only are his photos for the assignment awesome, he also got them in on time :)

Active Assignment Weekly March 21 - 28: Diptych
WIT: I was at this Italian restuarant and came across this guy. I thought he had a great camera face, so I asked him if I could take a few shots of him. He very kindly obliged. I managed to get a few shots in before my appetizer arrived; I showed him the pics and offered to email them to him. He liked them, and paid for my martini too! And yes, I do take my camera everywhere, sometimes to the chagrin of those I'm with...
I had this idea that I would do something that looked like movie stills, hence the 16:9 crops. I thought I would do the wide view first to introduce with some context, then the 2nd shot was a tighter one to get more of the character of the "star". I love the way he holds his wine glass.
Put the diptych together in Photoshop, and converted to BW, with a very slight warming tone added.
My daughter painted a "weather rock" this week during Spring Break. When we got home this afternoon, it was a little rainy and dreary, and when I saw the rock on our porch, I thought it would be a perfect fit for this assignment.
This girl was sitting on the pavement outside our office all day. Sometimes she took a photo and sometimes she made notes.
Eventually I gave in and asked what was going on. Apparently she is a student at the media studies centre (or whatever the old printers' college at Elephant & Castle is called now) and was on an assignment.
Everyone in the class was given a different location where they had to go and stay for 5 hours "soaking up the atmosphere" and observing. I could not work out exactly what the end result of all this was to be, except possibly lung disease from 5 hours of soaking up exhaust fumes.
So... if anyone else in Lambeth/Southwark spotted a lonely figure hanging around the same spot all day today, it could well have been another media studies student.

Assignment 3 was called "Made to Be Photographed." I decided to use this opportunity to vent my frustration with the current situation in our public education system.
Assignment 52 -- Bokeh -- my first experiment with shaped bokeh
I'd never done anything like this before, & did a lot of fooling around to get the right-sized stencil for my lens opening before anything worked at all. It was interesting to me, though, as it helped me understand more about aperture & light. I think I also made this more challenging for my initial attempt by choosing a complex shape, harder to make come out recognizably.
