Perched high above Ridgway, Colorado near Chimney Rock at sunset, I enjoyed the soft light afforded by the end of the day. I really loved the way a small cattle stream weaved its way through the scene below me, cutting through the changing aspen trees. A splendid view.

Landscape photographers: have you caught the most recent episode of my podcast, "F-Stop Collaborate and Listen?"

Part of the start of a free style poem I wrote about being in the mountains of Utah that Autumn day. For this image, I did a conversion black & white using a Business Portrait recipe in Silver Efex Pro 2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image.

215/366: The Mountains Tell A Story

The Mountains Tell A Story of beauty and tranquility…. The mountains surround Williams Creek Reservoir in San Juan National Forest Colorado. I took this shot will the rest of the family was eating lunch and I went exploring down by the reservoir. The vast beauty and wilderness that encompasses this area is beyond words and beyond explanation unless you have been there and taken in the fresh mountain air, unless you have heard the tall grasses wisp in the summer breeze, unless you have felt the serenity and tranquility of what is Colorado.

Spent some time in the Eastern Sierra's last week...a little past prime time for fall color so I did some experimenting with this technique...

First snow of the 2025/26 winter. Someone tell Ullr it's still fall. I guess I'm not complaining. Today was the best snowy aspens photo outing I've ever had. I was expecting a dusting of snow but it was dumping for real. That might be it for mountain biking in the high country this year.

"Moo Moo Milky way"

If you look closely, you'll understand my title...

(Please view large and in a dark area for best details)

During our autumn trip to the San Juan mountains in southern Colorado, there were many nights with clear skies allowing for some milky way photography. While I didn't take advantage of every night, I did decide to look for a somewhat unique composition that would be representative of the area and fall foliage. This dirt road and old cabin with the accompanying cows seemed just right. It was a chilly night with no wind and just a hint of red aurora behind me in the northern sky. There was a tremendous amount of air glow which is faint emission of light caused by planetary atmospheric conditions. It adds a bit of dimension to the sky. The foreground was captured just after sunset while there was still some light to illuminate the scene. The sky was captured about an hour later. Nothing was moved in between the shots except for a lens change. 10-5-2024.

2 Birds

In the style of Renoir 2 birds that are perched on a branch of an Aspen tree in watercolor

Prompt: in the style of Renoir painting, 2 beautiful birds , Aspen trees, fall season , peaceful scene, --ar 4:5 --v 5.2

On a hike through the forest in autumn near Crested Butte, Colorado, I stumbled upon this aspen tree that had very fresh bear claw marks running from the base of the tree all the way to the top. I was fascinated with the way in which the bark curled away from the aspen tree juxtaposed with the fall colors in the background.

I Traveled Along the Road Ahead

No cars or people around to keep me company

Aspen trees with leaves of yellow gave me comfort and a sight to enjoy

Beyond a distant hill, mountains stretched high up in the skies

I then realized I was in no hurry to go anywhere

Because I had the company of nature with open road ahead.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon with aspen trees all around while driving the Alpine Loop Drive. This was one of those views while driving when I just had to stop to soak in this view and capture an image of forest beauty all around. Needless to say, I never tire of seeing aspens...something about seeing those leaves shimmering with each passing breeze. The hillside and mountain peaks added a nice compliment for a setting in Uinta National Forest.

I first heard of the Dancing Aspens a few years ago. I'm not typically into visiting spots other photographers favor, but I felt drawn to see this grove of trees since I live only a few hours away.

Everyone I know that has gone has always guarded their location. After reading some blogs and getting some riddle-esque tips from friends, I had a pretty good idea of where they were. Since it was autumn and the leaves would be golden, we headed up to where I thought they would be and quickly found the grove!

There was another photographer there when we arrived. I let him get his shots before I took too many of my own using my classic lenses, my Canon FD 24mm f/1.4 L, Noct-Nikkor, and some ultrawide photos with the modern Sony 4/16-35.

We spent about an hour enjoying the changing light as the clouds passed overhead and taking photos before heading out to find a campsite.

While photographing the aspen groves that almost encompass the small village of Aspendale I spotted five horses grazing among the trees. I made my way to the grove where the horses were enjoying their morning and waited as this beautiful pinto separated herself from the group, giving me an opportuniy for this image.

The light snow on the peak and the color in the leaves was breathtaking!

Following the backroads of Colorado right now is a great way to find some amazing fall color vistas. The aspen trees are in full brilliance, plus the views aren't so bad to look at either!

Sadly I wasn't able to get to the Eastern Sierras this fall due to a hectic, work and kids sports schedule : ( Seeing everyones amazing shots from this year made me want to dig through my archives to see if there was anything that I had originally missed. This shot popped out. This was taken after Adam Potts and I caught sunrise at Silver Lake. On our drive out we decided to stop at a few spots along Rush Creek to look for some neat comps. I am definitely already looking forward to next fall!
