Driving out on Ophir Pass in Addiel's Lexus GX470 from Silverton to Ophir.

After 2,608 miles in seven days (of my husband driving me around Colorado), we are back home and I'm sorting through my gazillion pictures one by one as I have time. Here's one of my favorites. It is just outside Vallecito, Colorado. I didn't see a car for a long time, then while I'm aiming off into the mountain, this school bus zipped by and photo bombed me and it was perfect, ha. Thanks bus driver!

A mix of Fall color and Winter snow. it was actually blowing snow off the ridge above me into the scene...

This is basically just a snap shot of an old cabin that looked interesting on the trail. Went hiking with a group of friends that morning. It's unclear to me if it's still being used. I only had my 100-400mm lens on this hike in case we came across some wildlife, so had to keep walking farther way until I could frame up the scene. The landscape and sky are desaturated a little to keep the cabin as the main feature. Thanks to Dave Groat in the comments below for identifying this landmark. High atop the Grand Mesa of Colorado 250 lakes await the avid fisherman and lovers of nature (like me!). Toss in a fishing line or enjoy a hike ... it's a wonderful place to enjoy nature.

Part of the June lakes area in California.

It is about the time of year again for California fall colors, and it is my favorite time of the year too.

Here is the re-processing of the grand scene of Cal fall colors from Conway Summit in Eastern Sierra last year.

Can't wait to go back!

An Autumn Breeze Blows Gently

Aspen leaves shimmer

They sing softly and create a song

Across the rolling hills and mountainsides

For those who want to hear

For those who long to hear

The rustle of golden leaves

on an Autumn Afternoon.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one afternoon while driving along the Alpine Loop Scenic Backway. With this image, I wanted to capture this setting with the nearby grove of aspens that stretched across this nearby hillside and the backdrop of ridges...all caught in the light of the afternoon sun and the stillness between a passing breeze.

After being stuck at home for the better part of a year, Kevin Benedict, Sky Matthews and I were finally able to get back on the road for a little r and r shooting fall colors in Colorado. To be honest, there really wasn't too much rest or relaxation going on, but what could be better for the soul than seven days of chasing the light at five in the morning?

Prior to our trip, I really wasn't sure what to expect - fires were still raging throughout the western United States, Colorado was in the midst of an extended drought, most of the state had been hit by a freak winter storm less than a week before our visit, and for toppers, the forecast called for nothing but sunny skies throughout our trip. Despite the odds (and the elements) being stacked against us, I still felt very lucky to be able to travel at all this year. I know many have not been so fortunate due the pandemic.

This was my first fall trip to Colorado so I have little to compare it too. Reflecting back, the fires certainly caused there to be a bit more haze in the atmosphere, the drought may have caused some slight detrimental affect on the color in some locations, and there was nary a cloud in the sky during most of our trip (the day this picture was shot being a notable exception). Nevertheless, Colorado did not disappoint. In a word, it was incredible and if the state looks this nice with all the conditions stacked against it, I absolutely cannot wait to go back when the conditions are "favorable."

Anyway, this is a shot of the Dallas Divide near Ridgway, CO taken shortly after sunrise. Thanks for the read - please leave a comment and let me know what you think of the shot.

At times the views almost seemed like a painting of colors.

Wonderful cloudy and rainy morning allowing the scrub oak and aspen foliage to really put on a colorful show.

I shot this on a photo workshop in the Colorado Rockies in 1993. The location was a forest in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado near Ouray. I rather like the different layers of scenery in this view.

"There's beauty untold

That's ours to behold

In the wonderful world of color" by Richard M. Sherman / Robert B. Sherman

A fall sunset in the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado. It reminds me the world is a carousel of color, wonderful, wonderful color.

Standing just northwest of Logan Pass in Montana's Glacier National Park, Mount Oberlin is an impressive mountain that dominates the western approach to the pass. On this cloudy day, I was fortunate to catch Mount Oberlin in a shroud of clouds, showing the peak as it might have looked standing above the glacier during the Pleistocene Epoch.

A setting looking to the west-southwest while taking in views to more distant ridges and peaks coming off Mount Timpanogos and the Central Wasatch Range. This is in the Sundance Mountain Resort area.

Just returned from a weekend in Crested Butte and Aspen where we saw all types of weather from 5" of snow to postcard blue skies. The snow that fell in the area magnified what was already jaw-dropping scenes of fall majesty. In all of my years in the Gunnison/Crested Butte area, I've never witnessed such intense fall color with entire stands of golden aspen trees.

While on our way back to the campsite, we pulled over when we saw this gorgeous scene of the departing storm, fresh snow, and a colorful fall tapestry. This was a fall trip that I won't soon forget.

Near the beginning of the east fork trail to Mt. Baldy Arizona. Aspen Trees and an old split rail fence.

I went on a 3 day trip around Colorado after a business meeting. When I discovered that the aspen had turned a little early, I realized I could add the iconic Maroon Bells to my itinerary. I arrived at 5:45 am and the parking lot was packed. I stayed for 5 hours trying to get the perfect shot. A couple even got engaged while we dedicated (read crazy) photographers waited for the sun to light up the hillside on the left.

Ben and I headed to the Eastern Sierra this past Friday to explore the canyons, lakes, and streams of this awesome part of California for the weekend. Looking at the fall color reports, it looked like there was some areas that were peaking or on their way.

With the government shutdown in effect, we were forced to stay at an RV park in Mammoth Lakes. Fortunately, we were close to this Aspen grove on Sherwin Creek Rd and ended up visiting it twice. Much more to come, including some freezing cold (11 degrees) sunrise shots from the surrounding lakes, and a blazing sunset at Bonsai rock to finish the trip off.

This was my first trip to the Eastern Sierra, and it surely did not disappoint. If you are thinking of going, I would get out there quick! The cold temps are making an impact, and some areas like the June Lake loop should be peaking very soon. Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!

This image was taken a few days ago outside the town of Telluride. The fall colors in the San Juan Mountains were at peak.

This fall / autumn mountain scene was taken well before sunrise during blue hour. It is a 20-second exposure and the conditions were optimal to say the least! There was no wind and the scene was just simply idyllic.

There's something magical about the glow on fall foliage that occurs before sunrise and after sunset in the right conditions. The colors all seem to pop with luminance, which creates depth and drama - two of my favorite features in landscape photography. I love the San Juan Mountains of Colorado in fall!

Back in September I experienced one of the more exhilarating moments from my photography adventures to date. My friend and I backpacked to a remote location west of Carbondale, Colorado that he had found on Google Earth. We chose this location for its unique vantage of 14,131 ft. Capitol Peak and hoped there would be a nice pairing of autumn color to go with that view. We spent hours on this remote ridge looking for the absolute best compositions. A storm rolled through the area and we both thought our chances of photographing Capitol Peak at sunset were ruined until at the very last moment of light created by the setting sun, a beam of intense red light cast amazing color across the west and south faces of Capitol Peak. The amount of red in the rock was absolutely intense and fabulous. One of the best moments of the year for me.

I will be releasing this image soon for purchase on a limited basis - only 25 prints will be released. More on that in the coming months as I conduct a complete revamp of my website and printing medium offerings. Hope you enjoy it!

While at a roadside pullout along the Alpine Loop Drive with a view looking to the west to some distant ridges and peaks coming off Mount Timpanogos as part of the Central Wasatch Range. This is located in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. My thought on composing this image was to go a little wide angle with the focal length and include much of the mountain range to my front as well as including some nearby evergreens and aspens to kind of frame the setting but also give a layered look, from near to far.

An open area with a look to the west while walking around the mountain resort and ski slope bottom around Sundance. Years ago, I'd walked around this area noting people walking about or one older man throwing a ball with his chocolate lab. What I loved about this setting was the nearby evergreens (and a few aspens too!) and then the peaks of Mount Timpanogos just off in the distance. While that slight haze from the California wildfires present, I found with some contrast work in Capture NX2, I was able to bring out a look more of afternoon sunlight and a slight glow.

I find it fascinating how aspen trees grow, forming streaks as they climb up and across the mountainside. These streaks offer great contrast as the aspens change to their fall colors among the evergreen pines. This photo is from our autumn road-trip of California's Eastern Sierra in 2017.
