If you are interested in photography life is getting complicated because the range of decisions to be made is increasing at an amazing rate.

This month has been amazing because so many new cameras have been launched and I am interested in many of them. I suspect that I will get the Fuji X-T3 but I would like to get the Fuji GFX-50R or the GFX-100S but I cannot really justify paying between Euro 6000 and Euro 13,000 to switch to medium format. The 50R body will cost about Euro 4,500 and the 100S will retail at about Euro 10,000 so it is definite that i will not be getting the 50R. The 50R with a suitable lens would cost about Euro 6,000 so the possibility of me getting one is not good.

Sony did not launch a new camera but they announced a 24mm GM lens but when I went to my local dealer for details I was asked if I was planning to trade-in my Zeiss Batis 25mm and then I realised I had nor used the Batis since I got the Sony A7RIII. Many were expecting Sony to announce the A7SIII but all indications are that it will not appear in the shops until sometime in 2019

As the Sony 24mm is expensive it does not make much sense for me to purchase one if I already have a prime 25mm Zeiss lens so I decided to take it out to Glasnevin Cemetery to see how good it is. I liked the results but chromatic aberration proved to be an issue but despite that I suspect that I will give the Sony 24mm GM a miss. At this stage I am considering three lenses for my Sony A7RIII and they are the 12-24mm G, the 16-35 GM and the Sigma 105mm. Note: Capture One corrected for chromatic aberration better than did Lightroom.

Ever since it was introduced I have used Adobe Lightroom and I am currently Using version 8 [yes 8 not 7] but recently someone mentioned to me that Capture One is better than Lightroom. I had a quick look today and the images imported by Capture One do appear to be better ... it will take me a few weeks to investigate this because switching would have a major impact on my workflow.

Model Tonya

My wife ask me to photograph her co-workers in costume at Halloween. Tonya was dressed as an "Urkel" type nerd. Each time I pointed the camera at her she somehow transformed in that nerd-like persona. I thought she would make a good model. What do you think?

The Just Ask World Tour descended on Downtown Houston today to witness the first ever Cupid's Undies Run in the Bayou City!

Reggie and I had no idea what to expect but what we witnessed just blew us away!

Try to imagine 350 half-naked runners taking to the streets of Houston in celebration of their fundraising for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

350 of the nicest, most kind-hearted people in the world who not only ran in their undies to raise awareness of and money for neurofibromatosis, the same disorder that Reggie has. Money raised during the Run will help fund clinical trials, discover better treatments and hopefully find a cure!

How rude of me, today I asked if I might photograph him and I didn't have the courtesy to ask his name. I'll have to rectify that as soon as possible.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Ilford, Essex*. Here are the details of the project

The 'Tropical Urban Garden' in Ilford, Essex IG1

BRIEF:

This plot was a good sized, sub-urban garden containing a few established plants and several mature trees needed to be removed. The garden had a split-level terrace structure that the clients were happy to keep, and some weathered and partly sound fencing. Neither of the clients are keen gardeners, so a very low maintenance space was highly desirable.

SOLUTION:

The design takes its inspiration from traditional Victorian courtyard gardens to create a structured space with a strong sense of privacy and enclosure. Attractive natural slate flooring will feature throughout, inlaid with new Victorian-style tiling and low, ground cover planting to create a richly patterned and textured design.

The existing paving, mature trees, shed and concrete base will be removed, and a replacement shed erected in the space that currently houses the coal bunker. The retaining wall running along the front edge of the upper terrace will be clad with a wall constructed from new railway sleepers, and wide, slate tiled steps will allow passage from upper to lower terrace.

The upper terrace will feature a 'Rustic Autumn' natural slate patio in a formal 'grid' pattern, edged with a twin border of ornate Victorian tiles and 'Barley' natural slate. Planting in flush beds to the left and right of this paving will serve to mask the fence and storage area. Further screening of the storage area will be achieved with the erection of a 6 x 6 trellis screen, into which we will set a reclaimed Victorian stained glass pane, to create a highly unusual and eye catching framework to support climbers in the bed below. A focal point of the upper terrace will be two raised, slate capped railway sleeper pools, one either side of the steps, from which water will cascade over slate spouts into two similar pools in the terrace below.

TESTIMONIAL:

"We're extremely pleased with our new garden. The designer has not only created an elegant and welcoming space but has also been sensitive to the wishes we expressed at our first consultation.

The execution was carried out, not only with speed and care, but with great efficiency and attention to detail. Considering that a large amount of material had to be brought through the house, the Earth Designs team managed to keep the disruption to our daily lives to an absolute minimum. The few problems that inevitably arose were dealt with quickly, creatively and, it must be said, with good humour.

The end result is that an overgrown wilderness has been transformed into an attractive and relaxing extension to our living space and we are delighted with the result. We only wish we'd done it sooner."

Aşkın Gözyaşları / Tebrizli Şems ve Hz. Mevlâna

When you ask any bride or groom getting married in Philadelphia what the most iconic background for a true Philly wedding picture is they will almost all cite City Hall as their choice. City Hall is the tallest masonry building in the world and is a very popular city spot for wedding photographs of the bride and groom as well as the bridal party. After we left the Hyatt at the Bellevue where the bride got ready we stopped briefly on Broad Street to take a photograph with City Hall in the background. After taking this image we got back in the trolley and continued on to their wedding and reception at the Please Touch Museum, also in Philadelphia. While I know a photo in front of City Hall might seem cliche the moment between the bride and groom is anything but. I never mind requests for things such as “Can we take a picture with this building?” because making my clients happy is incredibly important to me. If a bride and groom want a picture with City Hall then not only will I gladly do it but I will do my best to make it the best City Hall picture I can! I asked the bride and groom to stand on the median with City Hall in the background and instructed them to just take a few moments alone. Sometimes something as easy as letting the bride and groom know that this is the last time that they’ll truly be alone together for the rest of the day is enough to elicit an emotional reaction. I don’t want to pose them in any way that doesn’t feel true to their relationship and the way that they generally interact so to put my clients at ease I try to have them act as they normally would! I chose to shoot this scene with a long lens to compress the bride and groom off of the City Hall background and create a sense of intimacy in the photo.

I don`t ask her to pose like this. She`s done this ever since she was little. When we walk on the beach, sometimes she just stops, and stare out to sea. I think it`s cool. I wonder what she is thinking?

Oman - Tanuf.

The Ruins of Old Tanuf, and the tragedy of this water-rich mountain village.

Tanuf is the place the bottled water [Tanuf, Salsabel, & Jabal Akhdar) claims to be from, so I asked MOP to take me to the wadi there. I wanted to see water, and dip my toes, so to speak but the ruins of old Tanuf soon claimed my attention.Tucked against the base of the mountain right next to the wadi, the ruins of Old Tanuf are impossible to miss. This was once an important village in the Jebal Akhdar mountain range, as the crumbling structures bear testament to.

But unlike the fabled ruins of many places in Oman such as the lost city of Ubhar sunk beneath desert sands, and others abandoned to Jinn and history, Tanuf was "lost" only recently in the long time-line of the Sultanate's history, and her ghosts are of a more tragic kind.

In case you may not know, Oman, and Muscat used to be two different countries pretty much. Oman was its own government since the time of the Prophet Mohammed [S.A.W] and remained such in the Interior of Oman up until the 1950s, and Muscat was ruled by the Said family (whom Sultan Qaboos hails from). Here in this place of Oman, the remembrance of Oman's Old Islamic Caliphate is still strong, and while Sultan Qaboos is well-liked, people often claim the Interior to be less friendly in terms of politics to Muscat, than the rest of Oman. Tanuf will tell you why. Old Tanuf was destroyed with several 1000 pound bombs by the British RAF in the mid 1950s under the orders of Sultan Sai'd bin Taymur. Some of the bombs are still there, as are the graves of the many non-militant women and children who were killed while in their homes. Some of those bravely attempting to route of the planes armed only with ancient rifles managed to escape using routes of the wadi behind to the safety of Sayq Plateau where the 1958-1959 Jebal Akdhar war was fought out. Two planes, shot down by some miracle during the Tanuf tragedy, have left their wreckage amid the mountains and what remains of the houses of Beni Riyam tribe.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Walthamstow, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Mosaic Garden in Walthamstow, London E17

BRIEF:

This small garden was a completely blank canvas – an unappealing patch of concrete with a small, overgrown area of lawn in one corner. Surrounded by other gardens on all sides, the space benefited from high, rendered block walls, giving it a strong sense of privacy and providing a secluded environment that allowed for a variety of planting possibilities.

SOLUTION:

Taking inspiration from Anton Gaudi’s Parc Guell in Barcelona, this garden features curved and undulating raised beds that flow organically around the space. Intricately adorned with colourful hand-laid mosaic patterns, these beds slope gently upwards from their lowest point in the left hand corner. The centre of the space features a kidney shaped area of artificial turf (chosen to withstand the attentions of the household dog) edged with a variety of earth toned tiles and surrounded by a hard flooring comprising a mixture of decorative pea shingle and plum coloured paddlestones in black dyed concrete.

The entertaining possibilities of the garden are enhanced by the integration of a free standing hot tub in the top left of the space, and curved fixed-bench seating in the top right corner. The seating area benefits from a bespoke kidney shaped wooden table with built in patio heater, allowing ample space for summertime alfresco dining.

The high block walls are adorned with mosaic panels in a chequerboard pattern, each panel individually designed and hand laid. Added privacy to the space is provided by rusted steel trellis set into the top of the walls, through which a variety of vines and creepers are trained. The boundaries are given extra embellishment with the inclusion of an assortment of wall-mounted sculpture, lanterns, planters and other ephemera.

Planting is eclectic with a multitude of big architectural

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) asked the Boat School to build three traditionally-built Whitehalls as replicas of the boats used by John Wesley Powell and his group of explorers during their first-ever descent of the Colorado River in 1869. The BBC will film a reenactment of the voyage later in 2013.

The School is building one 16-foot Whitehall, the "Scout Boat", and two 21-foot Whitehalls. Though Powell launched four Whitehalls onto the river in 1869, one, the 21-foot "No Name", was lost to the river shortly after the descent began.

The white oak from which the boats are constructed was supplied by Newport Nautical Timbers www.newportnauticaltimbers.com/ . The 16-foot boat will be planked in larch from eastern Washington, which is as close as it is possible to come to the original white pine planking used on that boat.

Whitehalls are the iconic American pulling boat.

They emerged in New York City and, possibly, shortly thereafter in Boston in the 1830's. It is thought the name derives from Whitehall Street in New York City, though no one is sure. By the mid-19th century, they could be found anywhere there was a sizeable body of water - the East Coast, the Great Lakes, and the Pacific Coast at San Francisco all boasted boatbuilders turning out Whitehalls.

The boats were usually used under oars and occasionally sail as fast harbor ferries and the boat used to take harbor pilots out to meet inbound sailing ships. They have a fine reputation as fast, easy-rowing vessels that are capable of carrying a great deal of weight.

Nearly all Whitehalls were carvel-built with white cedar planking on an oak backbone with oak frames. (Carvel planking means that the planks butted up against each other, edge to edge, which results in a smooth hull). The finer boats were highlighted with a bright sheer plank (the top plank) varnished to catch one's eye.

There is surprisingly little known about the boats used by the 1869 Powell Expedition, the first to descend the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. We do know that the Powell Expedition boats were built in Chicago IL to Powell's specifications.

It's known that the EMMA DEAN, or the "Scout Boat" as Powell called it was 16 feet long and planked in white pine, that the remaining boats (MAID OF THE CANYON, KITTY CLYDE's SISTER and NO NAME) were 21 feet long and planked in white oak with twice the number of frames and doubled stems and stern posts. (NO NAME was lost to the river shortly after Powell began the descent, though her crew survived).

There are no complete descriptions of the boats themselves, no pictures, and only a few scattered references made to the boats in the surviving journals and records of the Expedition.

The three boats we are building for the BBC are being constructed to the best information available, using the general scantlings provided by John Gardner's historical work, extent plans, our significant experience in building Whitehalls over our 32 years, and the historical data available to us.

The boats will be completed by mid-July, 2013.

Aggie Ring ’42 got to thinking and told me that the last time he probably was in Chicago was probably back in 1941 when the Army shipped the Texas Infantry through Chicago on the train on the way to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey to ship them over to Europe on a big ship to fight the Germans in Italy.

The wedding of Ali Elley and Matt Redmond. I was honoured to be asked to capture their big day.â¨â¨The ceremony took place at the Bristol Registry office. After the ceremony I asked the new couple and their guests over to Castle Park where I shot the group formal images. The church and garden area in Castle Park make for a much nicer (& less busy) location for these shots. Also, as the day had become very sunny (contrary to all indications and the weather reports), the trees and buildings there would provide some shade from the harsh light.â¨â¨An early afternoon reception was held at Racks Bar and Kitchen at Clifton Hotel. This is a really nice venue which actually looks like it used to be the cellars of an old Georgian mansion.â¨â¨After the early reception I stole the bride and groom away for a little break from the party and to get some more relaxed portraits of the couple. We only went a short way up the road as there are some great backgrounds nearby with lovely brick and rock walls as well as a spiky iron gate. Another great thing about this area was that the Victoria Rooms are just nearby and made for a great backdrop as well.â¨â¨After we had finished some portraits we headed back to Racks and prepared for the evening reception (more partying!!). This was followed by the couple's first dance.â¨â¨All in all it was a great wedding and I am happy to have been a (small) part of it.

Threadzfest 2010

Pahrump, NV

ORLANDO, Florida -

Boom.

The shotgun blast reverberates through the phone receiver. Breathless seconds pass before an eerily calm voice cuts through the ringing ear pressed against the other line.

“I just fired a round into the ceiling,” says the voice in a grave, matter-of-fact tone. “You have five minutes to tell me why the next one shouldn’t go through my skull.”

This harrowing crisis is one of dozens of roleplaying scenarios that 27 students assigned to the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) encountered during an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Ask, Care, Escort – Suicide Intervention (ACE-SI) workshop conducted April 15-17, 2016, in Orlando, Fla.

“ASIST gives students the fundamental tools, knowledge and resources to help save the life an individual contemplating suicide,” said Gerald Felder, suicide program manager, 143rd ESC. “This course teaches students how to identify people expressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors and take a proactive approach in providing immediate and compassionate care for them through hands-on training.”

Created by LivingWorks Education, a social enterprise dedicated to saving lives through the creation, development and delivery of innovative training experiences, ASIST has trained more than 1 million people throughout the world on how to apply scientifically tested tools and techniques to reduce the risks associated with suicide. The U.S. Army partnered with LivingWorks in 2009 to integrate ASIST training in the Army’s suicide prevention campaign.

“[ASIST] is more than just a series of dry presentations that explain why people shouldn’t kill themselves,” said Army Spc. Grace Lee, an ASIST student serving as a transportation management coordinator for the 520th Movement Control Team in Orlando. “It breaks the ‘death by PowerPoint’ mold by creating a caring and comfortable environment that encourages students to share their ideas and personal experiences … The ASIST instructors encourage us to address one another on a first name basis, [and] I feel this practice helps students speak freely among themselves by reducing the tensions associated with rank and status.”

“The foundational framework of ASIST assumes that anyone can save a life,” added Felder, a native of Birmingham, Ala. “The program’s proactive approach gives students the confidence to take action with the understanding that they should strive for proficiency rather than perfection. ASIST emphasizes this distinction to remind students that their training is equivalent to applying first aid to a wounded comrade, and that they should reach out to their chaplain, behavioral health specialist, chain-of-command or other experts with the same skill set and resources to provide long-term care.

The workshop’s interactive audio-visual presentations, small group discussions and roleplaying scenarios culminate into a versatile program that provides practical training for Army Reserve Soldiers beyond their military obligations.

“This is the second time I’ve taken this course,” said Lee, a Honolulu, Hawaii, native currently working as a nurse for a Florida Hospital women’s care clinic. “Shortly after I received my ASIST training certification, I applied my newfound skills and knowledge to help my patients … Taking this course again reinforces what I learned, especially on how to identify the subtle signs of suicide and what questions to ask when you suspect someone is thinking about taking his or her own life.”

Suicides in the Army ranks rose sharply from 45 in 2001 to 165 in 2012. Three years later, this all-time high dropped by nearly 20 percent. Felder partially attributes this decrease to the surge of Soldiers and Department of the Army Civilians who have participated in an ASIST workshop. He punctuates this correlation with recent suicide statistics within his command.

“The 143rd ESC sadly lost eight Soldiers to suicide last year,” said Felder. “Since Jan.1, 2016, only one Soldier in this command has committed suicide. Although one life lost to suicide is too many, the fact that the command reported nine suicidal threats that were averted through intervention tells me that the Soldiers, civilians and family members of this command are communicating with one another and using the plethora of suicide prevention resources available to them to include the training many have received through the ASIST program.”

Although an analysis of the specific contributions of ASIST to the Army’s declining suicide rate may prove difficult to measure, its personable approach and collaborative environment have given thousands of Soldiers the confidence to uphold the Army values founded on the basic yet essential moral principle that all life is precious.

“I lost my brother and nearly lost my husband to suicide,” said Lee. “If I had ASIST training during those dark days, I may have spared my family and me from immense pain and hardship. People tend to forget that suicide takes a heavy toll on the living as well … I highly encourage my fellow Soldiers to enroll in ASIST training immediately and actively participate in all the activities with an open mind.”

During there preformance the security guards wouldnt let me walk back and forth to shoot because there was to many crowd surfers and things beiing thrown throughout the crowd. So I was suck on the very far right of the stage up front taking pictures with the speaker right next to me also. Even with ear plugs in right next to it, it was extreamly loud. I was kinda pissed becasue I didnt get to move around and at Station 4 its super small. #Dislike
