ASCII Sculpture, 2009.

From the catalogue:

In 2001, Vuk Ćosić staged a solo show

at the Digital Artlab in Tel Aviv. On that

occasion, he realized the installation

ASCIImades – Sculptures, in which a

slideshow of ASCII images was projected

onto 30 cm high white sculptures in a dark

space. The images were nothing less than

pictures of the same sculptures, converted

into ASCII code. In his words, “nobody saw

that show”.

For the Pixxelpoint festival, Ćosić has

designed a miniaturized replica of the same

installation, using some small sculptures

he found in a vending machine in Seoul.

This diminutive installation is meant to be

observed by the viewer through a pinhole.

As usual, Ćosić is playing chess with

Duchamp, his “ideal father”, referencing

both the Boîte-en-valise and Étant donnés.

ASCII Chart Sampler, finished, framed and on the wall.

An ASCII chart executed as a cross-stitched sampler. 60+ hours spread over 4 weeks of cold dark Christchurch winter evenings.

"Totally a vibe. Sparkly or smooth, we were living our best ASCII lives!"

Available at Abnormality Y2K, from the 7th of February, this set of eyes comes as system eyes, lelutka appliers and as texture packs for other eyes on the market.

A loving throwback to the digital avatar forums of the Y2K, and to the pixel-art design dolls that many experienced, these eyes come in two fatpacks with an extra grey colour, or you can buy each pack in their own four colourways: Red, Blue, Green and Purple!

I had a lot of fun today with the April Fool's gag of Microsoft: MS-DOS Mobile version, the retro operating system of the eighties on my Windows Phone.

Including a toy camera, making photos in ASCII art or in CGA mode. Like this picture, of a bouquet of tulips in my living room, featuring in the background on the left my wife and on the right my daughter.

I've been on a bit of a PostScript kick lately, creating digital things just for the sake of it, rather than to achieve some other purpose.

I'd been thinking for a little while about creating an ASCII chart, perhaps something with the chars in a 3D grid, perhaps indicating their status w.r.t the C isprint(), isdigit(), etc, functions.

But then I thought of my original Periodic Table of Keys and my recent digital version.

I'm not sure what's up with all the Periodic Tables. It's not like I enjoyed chemistry back in school, far from it. That Periodic Table shape is iconic though, and I seem to enjoy playing with it.

So, the table is a re-interpretation of the traditional one. It shows the character, it's name and value in decimal, hex and binary. Also it's escape char and control char. The colours don't relate to the C character classification functions directly (apart from anything else, they overlap) but they do break the table up.

A PDF (with a colour and monochrome version) is available here, if anyone's interested.
