THIS REPRESENTS THE ROLE OF DANCE SCULPTURE HAD THE INFLUENCE OF THE NATYA SASTRA

Temples of India are important examples of the grandeur that Indian sculpture speaks of. Mapping on a broad scale, there are two styles of Indian temple sculptures - the Nagara (North India) and the Dravidian (South India). Carving of the temple shikharas is the basic difference between the two structural types. Conversely besides this discrepancy the sculpture of Indian temples follow uniformity. Architectural elements include the vimanas, garbhagrihas, mandapa, lathe turned pillars, miniature towers and others. They are common to nearly all Hindu temple sculpture. Another interesting side of temple sculptures of India is the cave temples.

Indian Temple Sculptures

Main motifs of Hindu temple sculptures consist of great epics such as Mahabharata, Ramayana, Puranas along with legends, plant and animal motifs, court scenes, famous beliefs, deities, eroticism and kirtimukhas. These temple sculptures can be classified in the following categories.

Central Indian Temple Sculptures

They are mainly crafted out of stone.Khajuraho temples are the main highlight of temple sculpture of Central India.

East Indian Temple Sculptures

East Indian temples include the ancient shrines of Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar. These temples echo the culture and faith of the indigenous people.

West Indian Temple Sculptures

Columns and pillars of these temples are worth a visit.Temples of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa exhibit the western Indian sculpture.

North Indian Temple Sculptures

The North Indian temple sculpture emerged during ancient India. They date back to the era of Mauryas. These temples are constructed on the lines of Nagara style. Temple towers are bee-hive shaped.Places like Haryana and Punjab also have gurudwaras. Consequently, they give an inclusive glance on Sikh sculptures of India. Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttaranchal and Haryana comprise the north Indian temple sculpture.

South Indian Temple Sculptures

Temples of South India are huge and etched with dedication, enthusiasm and love on stone. With their spirit these sculptures can bequeath an entirely unique identity on temple building in India. The lathe turned pillars, double mandapas and the kirtimukhas are unique architectural elements of South Indian temples. Some more shrines apart from the prime shrine are also erected in a specific temple complex. The types of the vimanas comprehend the number of shrines in a temple. For example, two shrines will certainly be housed in the dwikuta whereas trikuta will have three shrines. It was during the sovereignty of the Chalukyas and Cholas when the temple sculpture of South India received an impetus. In Hampi, the Vijayanagara Empire commemorated its art and sculpture on stone, the Cholas and Chalukyas are celebrated for their colossal temples. Miniature towers are another special facet of south Indian temple sculpture. A study of temples at Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala bring you a closer insight to the temple structures of this part of India.

Both Phoenix Project Dance and FuturPointe Dance taught dance workshops for Rochester City School District students at ArtSmart Camp.

Taken last October on Kodak TMax 6 x 7 with a Pentax 67, this image of The Tree represents the only one in the collection so far captured on film.

It was another fabulous sunrise after the soybeans had been cut - there was still dust in the air. I worked on this print on and off over the winter and settled on this look.

This print is currently hanging in the ArtSmart show at the Peoria Art Guild, through April 27.

See it almost lifesize!

The show is still on, so don't be shy and come along on the weekend to look at some great art!

Through the Steinbruck Center for Urban Studies at Luther Place Memorial Church, in collaboration with community partners, Luther Place is serving primarily Latino students from an elementary school located a few blocks from the church. The camp is currently running for four weeks and ends with a community block party. This summer camp is assisting the students in maintaining their reading and language proficiency over the summer, equipping them for a successful school year. In Addition, the camp is facilitating the building of relationships within the community in new and exciting ways.

Week one: Music & Movement. We had a jam packed week! We took a field trip to Discovery Theater, baked with Ms. Lolly, made instruments, and went on a community walk to our local fire house.

A huge thank you to Southwest Art and Collector's Guide for hosting us at @artsmart_nm's ArtFeast gala dinner last Saturday! If you haven't heard of this wonderful charity, which supports art programs in schools across New Mexico, make sure to check it out!

Week 3: Drama, Writing, & Poetry. We took a field trip to the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center where we learned to make paper and books, took our community walk to Giant, did drama and improv workshops with volunteer Miss Heidi, spent time with Zion Lutheran Church from Bristol, IN, and had water play with Montgomery College.

So this is a pretty cool story: We met this Aussie on Holi in Udaipur, totally by chance getting pulled in from the chaos into a guesthouse for some snacks and rest. He came in and we chatted briefly. He is exploring India by motorbike and one of the many things he mentioned was that he is headed to meet a friend at a potters village near Dharamshala. Many weeks later, we are in an envoy with friends and relatives to see a pottery village, when Julie remembers that passing conversation we had had with our friend. Digging up an old scrap of color stained paper with his email, we make last minure contact, and it turns out that he had JUST arrived, and that THAT DAY was his first night in a little overgrown house we had rented from a caretaker, on a little artsy land trust from the seventies. It is the home of Ram Kumar (www.itasveer.com/artsmart/articles/top-10-painters-of-ind...) a very famous painter (one of his houses) and it is charged with good vibes. Our friend, Strath, immediately got to work creating with abundant bamboo one of the most comfortable beds ive slept on in India. together we are fixing up some swank digs, right out in nestled in the himalayan foothills. Pretty sweet.
