Paola Reina Las Amigas dolls arrive on a traditional body with 5 joints (neck, arms, and legs). The first articulated body developed in Korea and made in China has articulated elbows, wrists, and knees, but not articulated hips and ankles. The second articulated body added the joints on the hips and ankles. My previous photos were of Teddy with articulated body #1. This body #2.
I like being able to move Teddy and bend his knees. However, the quality of the plastic articulated bodies is not as high quality as the vinyl original bodies. Teddy's head particularly did not seem to go with this body. His best fit to go with his head is the higher quality original body.

Yeah. We have a big homeless problem here in Honolulu. And there doesn't seem to be much of a will to do anything about it.
I've had trouble articulating the political situation in Hawaii, the issues, the difficulties I feel, and I think I have finally hit on it. When it comes to things like this, to quality of life things, and issues of how the city might be improved or the like, it seems like everything here is super-charged with a sort of racist, (anti-)colonialist attitude that prevents voices from being heard. If you make comments about how New York, or LA, or Chicago, or anywhere else, could or should do things better, it's generally taken in that spirit.
Giuliani and Bloomberg took action to get homeless off the streets. Rounded them up, made them get off the streets, for the improved quality of life of everyone else. But, suggest such a thing here, and it's all "Hawaiian people are homeless because their land, their livelihoods, have been taken by the white man, by the United States, and now you want to even round them up and kick them off their street corners, what little left they have?" ... It's turned around into a racial and colonialist discourse that simply wouldn't come up anywhere else.
People say that Hawaii is some kind of paradise of multiculturalism. And they complain about the lack of native voice. Which, granted, with the population being only 20-something percent native, they can't exactly make things the way they want through sheer numbers - whether in protests, or in elections. But, I don't exactly feel like I have voice here either. Because, here, purely by virtue of my skin color (and I guess, my class status & upbringing, and national identity as an American from the mainland), I am a "colonialist", an "imperialist," a "colonizer" and "occupier." Part of the problem, and thus not allowed to suggest any kind of political or societal change without my comments and intentions being painted as negative.

So back in Plymouth (where I live) at this point and my flatmate and old friend Neal and I spent a low-key evening at another friend's for NYE. I took this shot of a newly-poured glass of wine (it was too early for champagne!) with him in the background during a game of Articulate. I was trying to bring the glass into focus and it wasn't until afterwards I realised Neal had noticed me and was posing!
