Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi dal quartiere di Little Italy, ma non che l'immagine di noi italiani fosse confinata nello stereotipo molto kitsch dei ristoratori col mandolino in mano e quell'atmosfera alla "sta per passare la processione di San Gennaro"! Questo evidentemente rimane oggi delle migliaia di italiani emigrati nella grande mela e sicuramente ancora oggi orgogliosi delle proprie origini, ma emigrati ancora, nelle periferie o in altre città.
Mulberry Street è di fatto Little Italy oggi.
Passeggiando lungo la via ci si lasciano alle spalle i festoni e le insegne pacchiane e si entra senza accorgersene a Nolita, un piccolo quartiere completamente diverso dal suo limitrofo: elegante, tranquillo e racchiuso in se stesso. Qui sembra proprio di non essere a New York.

I didn’t know what to expect from the neighborhood of Little Italy, but not that the image of us Italians was confined to the very kitsch stereotype of restaurateurs with mandolins in hand and that atmosphere to "is going to pass the procession of San Gennaro"! This obviously remains today of the thousands of Italians who emigrated to the Big Apple and certainly still proud of their origins, but still emigrated, in the suburbs or in other cities.
Mulberry Street is actually Little Italy today.
Walking along the street you leave behind the festoons and tacky signs and you enter without noticing Nolita, a small neighborhood completely different from its neighbors: elegant, quiet and enclosed in itself. It’s like we’re not in New York here.
