Send in the Drums · James Asher
This is another of my High School art assignments,
we were supposed to show color and movement.
I used tempera paint with a light wash of dark blue to fill in the textures left from the brush strokes.
When I was done the teacher had me use a wider flat brush to apply a protective coating of clear latex, which made the surface reflective of light. That last step made it hard to get a good photo of it, depending on the angle it almost looks like it's under glass.

Recreation of Steve McCurry's "Afghan Girl"
This is my response to The Art Assignment by Toyin Odutola. I am loving the Art Assignment youtube channel so far, but this is the first which I actually set out to do! As someone in a visual profession, I care a great deal about my eyes. While I would loathe to lose any of my senses or limbs, I could not continue on living my life if I could no longer see.
It is an animated gif, but you can only see it if you go to the original size!
A scan of one of Leslie's students' assignments -- based on a poem I wrote (more than 10 years ago now) called Brown and Blue. My first days in the strange town of Houston, Texas were the inspiration for that poem. I remember RH liking it quite a bit.

Had I not known these were "military" boots, I would have chosen an entirely different quote, but because Rathman states that they are, I infer that he meant "soldier's boots". As such, they are things to be denounced. As a staunch pacifist and anti-military, these are (to put it bluntly) a killer's boots. They are objects to be denounced as remnants of a killer's life. They are things to be spat at, things to be thrown away in scorn. A host of quotes came to my mind. I imagine these still having blood on them. As such, as a killer's things, I tried to find a quote that was indicative of this. With the magnificent David Bowie's passing, a quote from him seemed appropriate. This is from "The Heart's Filthy Lesson", a song on the album 1.Outside, in the words of Detective Professor Nathan Adler, of Art Murder Inc., defender and fan of ritual murderers in London. If one appreciates killers, so far as depicting their objects in art, the quote fits.

One of our assignments in Art Class was to draw these little fried and dried fish. This is a Japanese delicatesse that was brought back from one of my teachers. The best/worst part of this assignment was probably the smell [ewww!].
Ink and wash. 17"x22". The mirror reflecting my image is on the floor and leaning against my art desk stool. The assignment was to do a still life but I worked in my self portrait for fun.

The blips and bloops and distortions of Sun Lux's music translated as dots in my head when I tried to see how to translate what I was feeling into something visible. My particular form (mild) of synesthesia translates movements into sound and sound into sensations of movement. Since I am so crappy at dance, I resorted to paint and colour to attempt to translate it. Sun Lux's name obviously influenced me without realizing it, as I made a sun-like blob in the middle, though I was truly trying to reflect physical sensations.
In my suburban neighbourhood, most houses are townhouses or duplexes. I've always been fascinated by how neighbours take care (or not) of what is essentially the same yard, how they divvy out each of their spaces. They create imaginary property lines where nature sees none. Neighbours try their best to carve in turf the limits of what they own, a line that moves a little bit every time they mow their lawns. This is especially ironic knowing that my entire city sits on unceded Anishinaabeg territory. We settlers have imposed our ownership on stolen land and usurped sovereignty. It's all in our heads and it's all stolen.
This is my attempt to participate in the @artassignment's episode "Artistic Alchemy"
The image of this tree bottle came to me as I watched the assignment video and saw the tire being paper. I immediately asked myself if this was a form of recycling, no necessarily in a literal sense, but as a form of irony. By taking refuse and adding a layer of colour, even if the result is in no way precious, the original "message" ofnthe refuse, its uselessness, is attenuated and emphasized at the same time. Even as I did recycle my plastic bottle, someone at the recycling plant may get a smile from it. I think that it too is recycling the message.
