Olha no que a gente tem que se submeter pra ganhar do Thiago em um concurso.

I have been in a strange stage of arrested development. My creativity begins to flow and then for some reason I toss my ideas out the window with "that's not good enough" in mind. Not good enough? For whom? For flickr? For my friends? For me? What has happened to me? I used to take photos because I loved capturing things, moments, ideas as they came to me. Not to impress anyone and not to please anyone. Somewhere along the way I lost sight of that. At some point my photos became more for someone else. Who? I'm not sure. But I take photo after photo and trash them almost as fast as I take them. This one isn't good enough. The light isn't good enough. It's not sharp. It's not impressive. It doesn't tell a story. They will hate it. It's not striking. It's not perfect. No emotion. Too much emotion. Cheesy. Lame. Not good enough. Not good enough. Not good enough. It should be better. I should be better.

STOP!

It should be about me. Not you. Not them. It's time to go back to where I started. Photographing from my heart. Not to meet a deadline, nor to fit into a group, nor to please anyone else but myself. This isn't a dig at anyone or anything. It's a realization of what I have done to myself and what I need to do to change it.

Once winter weather begins to clamp down, normal daily activity seems to come to a halt. Around here, people tend to reduce their outdoor exposure to the bare minimum, leaving the house mostly just for work, essential errands, clearing snow and maybe to workout. Winter storms (and the associated media hype) have a way of scaring people into staying at home. Not that any incentive is needed. it's just human nature to seek warmth and safety on a cold winter day. And there's also a compounding effect that sets in as winter progresses. We've all experienced the winter 'beat-down', that feeling of weariness after extended cold weather and/or successive winter storms. Very relatable feelings of 'enough is enough' and wanting to be done with winter. Personally I feel this more in late winter and early spring than I do in the heart of winter. There is simply no hope of reprieve from the cold in the midst of January, so I am mostly resigned to it. I cope by breaking out of confinement, bundling up and taking the camera on long treks. The longer I spend at this, the more I begin to appreciate the nuance of winter photography. On one level, it's all a monolith of white; color is desaturated and photos often lack a sense of depth. But astounding texture and dimensional aspects are out there waiting to be exploited. In this scene I happened to be standing near a small stand of trees just as the sun emerged from behind heavy clouds. The surrounding landscape was covered with a heavy blanket of new-fallen snow which created this amazing visual tapestry of texture. The long shadows cast by the trees seemed to reach out to me and created a contrasting overlay full of depth. It's a serene scene, but layered with a feeling of energy and movement. Great dichotomy and a revelation for me in terms of capturing the darker side of snow. This was the end of hour three of my exploration. Had I bagged the session even five minutes sooner I would have missed this moment entirely. I came away from this feeling elated, as if I had overcome winter weather, even if only for a while.

Oh how a hummingbird can make me smile. They never fail to fascinate and delight.

This is a photo of my eldest grandaughter, Georgia, contemplating the weir at Deep Hayes Country park. Georgia will be 9 years old in a couple of weeks.

When my kids were little I loved watching their appreciation of the world around them mature, the same places and things took on new meaning as they understood more of what they meant within newly discovered contexts. Now I'm enjoying that same process all over again with my grandaughters.

A year or two back Georgia simply giggled with delight at the spray that tickled her face from this wier, - a pure, childish tactile pleasure, now she want's to cross the stepping stones (out of sight) and go on her own to study at close range the wonder of of the water cascading down - a new fascination of a familiar place - arrested development, possibly not the exact meaning of this phrase - but works for me to explain this wonderful phenomenon.

In UK, you would probably be arrested for carrying these!

A little while ago, Aviation and Airline Man suggested I build the Stair Car from Arrested Development. I've never seen the show, but I did see pictures of the vehicle a few times, there have been a few LEGO versions (typically minifig scale) and it's certainly an interestingly different vehicle to add to my collection. So, here goes.

The nose looks a bit long and I obviously still have the actual stair to build, but it is getting there. (I am also still planning an F-8, but there are a few unresolved issues.)

For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Marshals Service has conducted a high-impact national fugitive apprehension initiative focusing on the country’s most violent offenders. This six-week initiative, called Operation Violence Reduction12 (Operation VR12), resulted in the arrest of more than 8,075 gang members, sex offenders and other violent criminals.

While Operation VR12 was conducted nationwide in all 94 federal judicial districts, U.S. Marshals focused special attention on 12 selected locations, designated as priority cities by the U.S. Department of Justice: Baltimore; Brooklyn, New York; Camden, New Jersey; Chicago, Illinois; Compton, California; Fresno, California; Gary, Indiana; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; New Orleans; Oakland, California; Savannah, Georgia; and Washington, D.C.

In order to have the greatest impact on violent crime, Operation VR12 focused on fugitives who had three or more prior felony arrests for crimes such as murder, attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault, arson, abduction/kidnapping, weapon offenses, sexual assault, child molestation and narcotics. Operation VR12 investigators increased their focus on fugitives accused of sex crimes and on the recovery of missing children.

Between February 1 and March 11, the U.S. Marshals Service used its multi-jurisdictional investigative authority and fugitive task force network to arrest 648 gang members and others wanted on charges including 559 for homicide; and 946 for sexual offenses. In addition, investigators seized 463 firearms, $390,360 in currency, and more than 71 kilograms of illegal narcotics. Also during the operation, investigators recovered 17 children who had been abducted and reported missing.

today is........ National Storytelling Day. and d. mallard wants to tell you why he was arrested!! in his own words:

after extensive research we discovered that recently there was a goose day (september 29th), *two* donald duck days (march 13 and june 9), even a peking duck day ( january 18th); but we'll have to wait til july 1st to celebrate real ducks on National Ducks and Wetlands Day (July 1st!!) ..... so my friends and i were having spirited discussion about having to wait almost 10 months to celebrate real ducks, when the local forestry service gendarme came along and turned us over to the duckville sheriff for our "rowdy" behavior.

He resisted arrest. The Policewoman beat him down to her boot heels with her truncheon, expertly handcuffed him and is now issuing a sever punishment for his actions. Policewomen know how intimidating their black leather boots are and enjoy punishing offenders in this manner.
