Roger Hess drives a vehicle mounted with a pair of arrays to detect UXO (unexploded ordnance). To facilitate and speed up area reduction, Golden West has developed relatively inexpensive and simple UXO detection technologies such as this vehicle-mounted PVC frame with two detection arrays attached to trucker's tarp. This frame can be mounted on a diversity of vehicles including the ubiquitous hand tractor.

After a war ends, vast areas of land may be suspected of being mined or containing dangerous UXO. The process of discriminating truly contaminated areas from those simply suspected to be contaminated is called area reduction. The number of suspect areas far outstrips resources available to perform detailed clearance operations, making effective area reduction essential. Golden West is developing innovative area reduction systems designed to effectively locate landmines and munitions such as cluster bombs, mortars and grenades, using both off-the-shelf and developmental technologies.

The Golden West Humanitarian Foundation is a United States-based, non-profit charity dedicated to the development of innovative, appropriate technologies to overcome the operational limitations encountered by the humanitarian mine action community. By bringing to bear their innovative programs and expertise, Golden West saves lives and greatly improves the operational efficacy of the organizations working to rid the planet of the deadly Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) that threaten millions world wide.

For Cambodians, injury or worse from the landmines and unexploded ordnance that riddle their country is an ever-present threat. Unused munitions in dangerous, unsecured stockpiles pose yet still more dangers, presenting opportunities for misuse and illegal transfer. Each day in Kampong Chnang, Cambodia the Golden West Explosive Harvesting Program team works to secure Cambodians a brighter, safer future by transforming these dangerous stockpiles of munitions into the tools deminers need to clear the country's minefields. Each month Golden West transforms hundreds of pounds of deadly munitions into thousands of disposal charges essential to clearance operations. With each disposal charge we create, one more deadly landmine or piece of unexploded ordnance is cleared in Cambodia.
