The Karl G. Jansky Very large Array (VLA) is a radio astronomy observatory located on the Plains of San Agustin, about 50 miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. It comprises 27 25-meter radio telescopes in a Y-shaped array.

I took this shot as part of a night photography workshop offered in connection with the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge Festival of Cranes (www.festivalofthecranes.com/), which was held November 17-22. It was a great workshop, and I met photographers from all over the world.

The workshop was run by professional photographer Roman Kurywczak (www.roaminwithroman.com), a great guy and a terrific photographer. If you have not visited the VLA, put it on your list. It is otherworldly! The VLA was featured in the 1997 movie, Contact.

The Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies. A member of the Artamidae, the Australian magpie is placed in its own genus and is most closely related to the black butcherbird (Melloria quoyi). Currawongs have yellow eyes, whereas Magpies have red-brown eyes and Butcherbirds have very dark brown, almost black eyes. It is not, however, closely related to the European magpie, which is a corvid. The adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird ranging from 37 to 43 cm in length, with distinctive black and white plumage, gold brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped bluish-white and black bill. The male and female are similar in appearance, and can be distinguished by differences in back markings. The male has pure white feathers on the back of the head and the female has white blending to grey feathers on the back of the head. With its long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is omnivorous, with the bulk of its varied diet made up of invertebrates. It is generally sedentary and territorial throughout its range. Common and widespread, it has adapted well to human habitation and is a familiar bird of parks, gardens and farmland in Australia and New Guinea. This species is commonly fed by households around the country, but in spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests. 66462

Bird Island, Seychelles.

Bird Island is a beautiful remote privately owned, coral sand island situated in the Indian Ocean just off the East African coast. The island has stunning, scenery beautiful beaches and a huge array of wildlife.

The Fairy (or white) Tern is a beautiful bird seen on all islands in Seychelles. Fairy Terns use trees for breeding, although they do not build a nest. Instead, the female lays a single egg on a branch, usually where there is a knot or fork to support the egg. She will sit on the egg to prevent it from falling from the branch. As soon as the egg hatches twenty one days later, the fluffy chick clings on to the branch with its large clawed feet. The adults feed the chicks small fish, which are carried crossways in the parent’s beak.

I have so many of these shots, I will probably bore you all to death with them.

Westfield Topanga, formerly known as Topanga Plaza, is a 2.1 million square-foot, two-level indoor shopping center located in Canoga Park, California. It is owned by the Westfield Corporation.

Opened February 10, 1964, Topanga Plaza was California's first enclosed shopping mall. A noteworthy feature was the "Rain Fountain" on the south end. It consisted of several circular arrays of vertical monofilament line stretching from the ceiling to a raised landscaped area on the floor. The effect of rain was created by droplets of recirculated glycerine slowly descending along the wetted lines.

In 1992 May Centers, Inc., the original developer, was renamed CenterMark Properties and was sold by parent company May Department Stores in 1993 to a consortium led by Westfield Holdings, Ltd., a predecessor of Westfield Group.

The NBC comedy Parks and Recreation filmed scenes at Westfield Topanga during an episode of the fourth season entitled "Pawnee Rangers.

In September 2015, Westfield launched a major expansion of Westfield Topanga, called The Village at Westfield Topanga. The new open-air shopping destination is located along Topanga Canyon Boulevard, between Westfield Topanga and the Westfield Promenade.

EXPLORE--July 18, 2009

This is a close-up HDR photo of the interior of an electrical surveillance device recessed in the wall of a concrete indoor parkade in Dartmouth. The image looks to me like the set of a sci-fi movie.

Angled shot down Wabash Avenue.

One more from the 4th.

The countless semaphores at Vișeu de Jos greeted every train arriving at the station. Well...not anymore, with the recent planned (or already introduced?) suspension of services between Salva and Sighetu Marmației.

R 4116 from Sighetu Marmației to Beclean (-Cluj Napoca) was the first train we saw during our stay in Northern Transilvania, and it was headed by the 60-1115 in a heritage-style livery. We managed to snap a picture of it, as it was leaving Vișeu southbound, with the full array of semaphores in the background.

I got the idea for publishing this picture after seeing the one Thorge Bockholt had published, which shows the station in an almost unchanged state, 21 years before (*his picture is taken on the other side of the station).
