An addition to the already successful structure of Vegas – ‘Vegas Array’ incorporates a sympathetic, broken vertical print that not only softens the design but adds a new dimension to the physical texture.

New Mexico's Very Large Array (VLA)

is one of my favorite places in New Mexico. I was there several times and I'm fascinated by this place in the middle of nowhere.

The Very Large Array (VLA) is a radio astronomy observatory located on the Plains of San Agustin, between the towns of Magdalena and Datil, some fifty miles (80 km) west of Socorro, New Mexico, USA. U.S. Route 60 passes through the complex, which is adjacent to the Boy Scout Double H High Adventure Base. The VLA stands at an elevation of 6970 ft (2124 m) above sea level. It is a component of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).

American oystercatcher - Haematopus palliatus

There were several pairs arrayed along the north end of Wrightsville Beach (North Carolina). They were used to pedestrians and did not mind me approaching slowly to get photos. One of this pair was banded (green band with "CTA") and was known well to a local woman conducting a survey.

This is CTA's mate, an unbanded bird. Even if the band is not visible, the bird is distinguished by the sharp tip of the beak. CTA's beak is blunt. I do not know which one is male and which female.

While many fewer varieties than I saw in the Andes, still the range of varieties of potatoes at the Strathcona Farmers Market still offers variation in taste and texture.

My Coronation Anna 17'' Limited Edition Doll is now wearing the outfit of my Celebration Merida 18'' LE Doll. She looks really beautiful and very natural in her new outfit and accessories. She looks ready to go to battle against her enemies with her array of weapons. She looks as fierce as Merida did in this outfit, with her smirk and confident glance. I think Anna would look terrific as Joan of Arc as well. Due to the layers of clothing and many accessories, it took by far the longest to dress Anna in her new outfit of any of my clothing swaps. These photos were taken with flash lighting.

Following my swapping of the outfits of Cinderella and Snow Queen Elsa, it was suggested to me that I swap the outfits of the remaining three 17-18'' Limited Edition Disney Store Dolls on my desktop display. They are Belle (2010, LE 5000), Celebration Merida (2012, LE 7000) and Coronation Anna (2013, LE 2500). Here they are standing side by side wearing their original outfits. Merida is listed at 18'', which is a total mystery to me, since she is actually the shortest of the 17'' LE dolls.

This will be a round robin clothing swap. Belle's outfit and accessories will go on Merida (except for her earrings and hair ornament). Merida's outfit and accessories will go on Anna. Finally Anna's outfit and accessories will go on Belle, except for her hair ribbons. I was actually quite surprised by the outcome of the switches.

The Very Large Array, in the desert outside New Mexico, is currently studying dark matter. Very dark matter.

Oh, wait, that's only because it was 9:30 PM when I got to the area because I somehow lost 180 miles of road between Petrified Forest and Socorro when I was planning that day of my trip.

There's supposed to be some huge satellite dishes out there. Somewhere.

GUAKIA INC www.guakia.org/index.html

Based in Hartford, Connecticut, Guakía, Inc. is the premiere Puerto Rican cultural center in southern New England.

Our mission is "to provide a focal point for the promotion of the cultural identity and heritage of Puerto Ricans in the United States through the advancement of the groups' history, language, music, arts, literature, and other cultural characteristics; and to establish a center that will serve as a clearinghouse for the study, celebration, and exposition of the Puerto Rican/Hispanic culture available to all residents of the city of Hartford and the capital region."

This page is just the beginning of our new website, being built with the assitance of Trinity College's "Smart Neighborhood Plan," a project funded in large measure by grants from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Additional funding for Guakia's website has been received from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

We hope that you will soon be able to learn more about our organizations' history by exploring the pages of this site as they become available. The site will include detailed information on Guakía's educational and arts programs, its community partnerships, and will also feature photos and video clips of participant children and youth. We also welcome inquiries about how to help support Guakía, Inc. as we seek to expand our children and youth programs.

To provide a focal point for the promotion of the cultural identity and heritage of Hispanics in the United States through the advancement of the groups history, language, music, arts, and literature and to establish a center that will serve as a clearinghouse for the study, celebration and exposition of Hispanic cultureavailable to all residents of Connecticut.

Vision and Goals

To be the premier non-profit Hispanic arts, cultural and humanities organization dedicated to enriching the value of the Hispanic community by promoting, preserving and celebrating its cultural heritage and diversity.

To help our youth develop a strong sense of self, maximize their talents, acquire vision, internalize learning and in turn impact others in a positive way, fostering harmonic diversity in our community. Founded in 1983, Guakía is the most prominent arts and cultural organization in Hartfords Hispanic community. The word, guakia, means we in Taino, the language of the original inhabitants of the Caribbean (pre-Columbus). The word guakia signifies the unity of the Hispanic community no matter where individuals may be living. Volunteer parents who felt that their children had lost contact with the traditions of their culture and heritage founded Guakía. They felt their children needed to connect with their heritage in order to develop a sense of pride, community and self-esteem. Originally, Guakía was focused on the culture of Puerto Rico, however in recent years, as the community has become more diverse and the needs have shifted, Guakías mission has been broadened to include all Hispanic cultures. Using a curriculum based on both Puerto Rican and Latin American music, dance, and art forms, Guakía provides a wide array of visual and performing arts initiatives such as folkloric dance, painting, ceramics, traditional Hispanic music, and art classes. The early sacrifices of parents, volunteers, and teachers gave Guakía strong roots in the Puerto Rican culture. These roots have now expanded and sprouted like a beautiful tree with many branches and leaves to include all Hispanic cultures.

Surrounded by hills and away from any large cities, the Very Large Array is east of Socorro, New Mexico on US 60.

The Very Large Array consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.
