For Smile on Saturday! - part of human face

For Project 365, 2022 Edition: Day 312/365

I bought a mugwort plant with the idea of using it to flavour schnapps. It's the vital ingredient in absinthe. However, the herb is impossibly bitter. The bitterness can only be removed from the flavour by distillating the extract, beyond what I can do. I have such a small garden that I've considered disposing of the plant. But it still has two things going for it. I love how the leaves smell. And it flourishes in a spot that gets full afternoon sun even in drought to produce a mound of lush silvery-green foliage.

Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.

Glechoma hederacea is an aromatic, perennial, evergreen creeper of the mint family Lamiaceae. It is commonly known as ground-ivy, creeping charlie, alehoof. It occurs all over Europe, in the temperate zones of Asia, in Siberia. It is considered an aggressive invasive weed of woodlands and lawns in some parts of North America. Glechoma grows in moist shaded areas, but also tolerates sun very well. It is a common plant in grasslands and wooded areas or wasteland and blooms from April to June. Glechoma hederacea has been used in the traditional medicine of Europe going back thousands of years for the treatment of a variety of different conditions including disorders associated with the liver and bile, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, kidneys and urinary tract, fever, and flu. Some people consider Glechoma to be an attractive garden plant, and it is grown in pots and occasionally as a groundcover.

I found this Western honey bee atop the Aromatic asters. The bee has its pollen pouches full but posed for my macro lens regardless. The Aromatic asters bloom even later and are much closer to the ground, barely over 12 inches (30 cm) and with more petals in their blossoms.

Our gardenia bushes are still blooming but not for long. Just a few fresh blooms here and there. Clearly spring is coming to an end, and it's time to make way for summer and all its summertime blooms.

Took this shot back when the bushes were loaded with their fresh, aromatic blooms. What better way to celebrate the last few days of spring when with another gardenia bloom.

Soldering, a very smoky process.

The smoke is slightly sweet-smelling but, like smoke from other sources, very noxious. Because of the danger, I use means of exhausting or blowing the smoke out of my way while soldering.

Fragrant double cream white Narcissus and opulent white ruffled Ranunculus, together: white delight...

A pleasure for all our senses.

Happy Sliders Sunday!

It was surprising, and a treat, to find some of these very late season asters blooming on the last day of October along a little used trail in the Lacey Keosauqua State Park. I'm not sure of my ID but I based it on the leaf shape and having blooms so late. It was the only wildflower we noticed as we walked and drove through the park.

Catmint is an aromatic herb that is commonly grown in the garden. It produces clusters of lavender-blue flowers amid mounds of gray-green foliage. This easily grown plant has an interesting history regarding its various uses in the landscape. For example, the herb is thought to have been first cultivated in the Roman town of Nepeti, where it was used as herbal tea and insect repellent. This is also believed to be the origin of its genus name, Nepeta.

Ramen is a delicious, aromatic soup dish with noodles, vegetables, meat and egg. It is increasingly popular as it is a very balanced, nutritious and comforting meal, as the broth is prepared over low heat and served piping hot.

Minced garlic in water. Allium, the generic name for the onion and garlic family and its many aromatic relatives, is also the Latin term for garlic.

According to the label, that's about one serving of aromatic goodness in this spoonful, a decent amount. I'd be crazy, though, to consume this straight up. (I did use a comparable amount to spice up a bowl of rice for dinner the night I shot this picture; oh, was it good. That should count under the unwritten Flickr rule of eating food props after the photoshoot, considering the unique compliance challenges of this theme.)

These Thai Basil flowers (Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora) are quite epehemeral — two different stages are visible here. Flowers appear in groups of four, about eight of which are clustered along a stem over about 12-14cm. Within clusters blooming is staggered over several days. Thai Basil is a delightful aromatic herb reminiscent of anise and licorice and native to southeast Asia — delicious especially in Thai cooking. The plants flourish in my Gold Coast garden.

The Gardenia bushes are blooming and their aromatic fragrance fills the air with their heavenly scent.

Monarda didyma, the crimson beebalm, scarlet beebalm, scarlet monarda, Eau-de-Cologne plant, Oswego tea, orbergamot, is an aromatic herb in the family Lamiaceae, native to eastern North America from Maine west to Ontario and Minnesota, and south to northern Georgia. Its odor is considered similar to that of the bergamot orange, which is used to flavor Earl Grey tea. The genus name comes from Nicolas Monardes, who described the first American flora in 1569.

The fall colors of Appalachia reach further than the canopy, indeed, one may be shocked by the fall colors just under foot. Lovely flowers springing up as fall drags on, adding contrast to the falling leaves of Autumn. In my journey ever onward as a photographer I often find myself pursuing such sights, small and insignificant as they may seem, brought to life for all to appreciate, working to display the incredible grandeur of even the smallest and most unnoticed of things. These Aromatic Aster grow bountifully along my creek, providing more than just a glance, but almost as importantly, a source of sustenance for bees, and butterflies.

Saturday Ramblings -such beautiful aromas from Wild Roses !!

Lavender blooms on all different focal planes.

My mother has many gardens filled with many things. This morning the eucalyptus caught my eye.

Another shot from one of my several visits to this enchanting woodland.

The aroma of the wild garlic plant catches you well before you get to the wood carried on the damp morning air. Being here around sunrise is such an enchanting experience with the sound of all the woodland birds and the fleeting glimpses of Deer, knowing you are the only person around! It's an experience I find energising and well worth getting up and out for.
