Australian Army special forces soldiers from 2nd Commando Regiment prepare to board a Sydney ferry from an Army rigid-hulled boat as part of a Special Operations Command maritime counter-terrorism training activity on Sydney Harbour, on Wednesday, 24 June 2020.

Exercise Mars Toothfish is essential Australian Army training that ensures the Australian Defence Force is ready to defend Australia and its national interests. The training activity was conducted using strict COVID-19 protocols.

The Mars series of counter-terrorism training activities are designed to build and maintain the skills of 2nd Commando Regiment's Tactical Assault Group - East (TAG-East), a short-notice counter-terrorist force, able to respond to a terrorist incident of national importance or in support of state and territory-based police.

Photos from the abandoned Savanna Army Depot in northwestern Illinois. This place was fascinating, and I wish I had more time to explore (and plan to return in the future); a massive military facility that appears to have been hurriedly abandoned during the base closure process. It would be a great place for an organized photo expedition, and highly recommend a visit.

The facility opened during World War One as a proving grounds for munitions from the nearby Rock Island Arsenal. It grew to more than 13,000 acres with more than 8,000 personnel during World War Two. The base closed in 2000, with a large portion turned over to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and some set aside for an apparently failing effort at business development. Large parts remain off-limits due to contamination.

In this Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 photo, Pakistani Army soldiers with the 20th Lancers Armored Regiment, carry supplies up the 8000-foot mountain near their outpost, Kalpani Base, in Pakistan's Dir province on the Pakistan-Afghan border. Kalpani is on the front line in the 10-year war against militant Islamists, a war which allies Pakistan with the U.S. and NATO in an uneasy, distrustful partnership. Pakistan feels scapegoated for the coalition's failures in Afghanistan. At the same time it's accused of playing a double game, fighting the militants it chooses to fight while giving others safe havens and logistical support for their actions in Afghanistan.

Pakistani troops feel West undervalues their war

KALPANI BASE, Pakistan (AP) -- The wind was howling and the snow outside their bullet-pocked bunker lay knee-deep as the men of the 20th Lancer armored regiment bedded down for the night, nearly 2,500 meters (8,000 feet) up a mountain on one of the world's most inhospitable borders.

Pakistan has lost more than 3,000 soldiers in battles with Taliban since it deployed soldiers to its western border, more than all the foreign deaths in Afghanistan since 2001. Although it sees India to its east as its biggest military challenge, it regards its Afghan flank to the west as critical enough to warrant stationing 130,000 soldiers there.

The base called Kalpani is on the front line in the 10-year war against militant Islamists, a war that allies Pakistan with the U.S. and NATO in an uneasy, distrustful partnership. Pakistan feels scapegoated for the coalition's failures in Afghanistan. At the same time it is accused of playing a double game, fighting the militants it chooses to fight while giving others haven and logistical support for their actions in Afghanistan.

Last month the army took an unprecedented step, allowing an Associated Press writer and photographer to follow Pakistani troops on their front-line rounds for a glimpse inside its fight against militants in the Afghanistan-Pakistan theater.

Soldiers from the 6th and 8th/9th Battalions, The Royal Australian Regiment, conduct the live-fire phase of the Basic Sniper Course with the SR98 Sniper Rifle at Greenbank Training Area, Queensland.

Soldiers from the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, completed the Basic Sniper Course to qualify as snipers in the Australian Army.

The course involved a theory module where participants learned about navigation by day and night, and were assessed on basic soldier skills.

The following module focuses on camouflage and concealment, judging distances, observation, stalking an enemy, and refining their marksmanship skills at various distances on the SR98 Sniper Rifle.

The Basic Sniper Course is competitive to ensure the Australian Army chooses the best for employment as Sniper Team Leaders, and only the most capable participants finish the course as qualified snipers.
