Gaelplex - Proposal for an Irish Language Centre. Grand Parade, Cork City.

The client, Gael Taca, is the support group for the Irish Language in Cork. The design for the scheme sought to give Gael Taca the much needed facilities to promote the language effectively in the city. The proposed centre is located on the Grand Parade with a new public square off Market Lane. The project brief encompassed a theatre / performance space, exhibition space, cafe, book / language resource, language labs and space for a pre-school. The idea for the project was to enhance the identity of the language in the city, to increase the possibility for interaction through the language and to create a meaningful connection between the city and the centre. From these core ideas of identity, interaction and connection the concept of “flow space” emerged. The proposal utilises large interconnecting voids within the centre and large openings on the facade to allow the activities of the city and the language centre to flow between each other. Thus, these relationships allow the language to enhance its connection and identity with the city.

El cliente, Gael Taca, es el grupo de apoyo para la lengua irlandesa en Cork. El diseño del proyecto buscaba dar a Gael Taca, las instalaciones necesarias para promover eficazmente el idioma en la ciudad. El centro propuesto se encuentra en la calle Grand Parade con una nueva plaza pública en Market Lane. El proyecto abarcaba un teatro / espacio para actuaciones, un espacio para exposiciones, cafetería, un departamento de recursos de la lengua y biblioteca, laboratorios de idiomas y un espacio para preescolar. La idea del proyecto era mejorar la identidad del idioma en la ciudad, aumentar la posibilidad de interacción a través del lenguaje y crear una conexión significativa entre la ciudad y el centro. A partir de estas ideas principales de identidad, interacción y conexión surgió el concepto de “espacio de flujo”. La propuesta utiliza grandes huecos de interconexión dentro del centro y grandes aberturas en la fachada para permitir que las actividades de la ciudad y el centro lingüístico fluyan entre sí. Así, estas relaciones permiten al lenguaje mejorar su conexión e identidad con la ciudad.

Le regole per il progetto hanno cercato di dare Gael Taca i servizi tanto necessari per promuovere la lingua in modo efficace in città. Il centro proposto si trova sulla Grand Parade con una nuova piazza pubblica fuori il Market Lane. la summa del progetto comprendeva uno spazio teatrale / spazio espositivo, caffè, bookshop, laboratori linguistici e lo spazio per un pre-scuola. L'idea del progetto è stato quella di valorizzare l'identità della lingua in città, per aumentare la possibilità di interazione attraverso il linguaggio e per creare un collegamento significativo tra la città e il centro. Da queste idee fondamentali di identità, l'interazione è la connessione, il concetto di "spazio flusso" è quindi emerso spontaneamente, come anche il concetto architettonico. La proposta utilizza grandi vuoti di interconnessione all'interno del centro e grandi aperture sulla facciata per consentire le attività ludiche della città e del centro linguistico di fluire tra di loro. Così, queste relazioni, permettono alla lingua di migliorare la sua connessione e l'identità con la città.
