Sections of the wall of the Temple of Bel were reconstructed after an earthquake in the 10th century and during the 12th century when it was converted to a fortress.
Palmyra, located on a fertile oasis, grew into one of the most important sites on the Silk Road and other trade routes between Persia and the Mediterranean coast.
During the 1st century AD, under Tiberius, the Romans took control of the area from the Seleucids. During the 3rd century AD, however, the "Warrior Queen" Zenobia (widow of the provincial governor) rebelled against Roman authority and annexed Egypt and eastern Turkey to her Palmyrene Empire.
In 272 AD the Emperor Aurelian re-captured Palmyra and took Zenobia captive to Rome.
Palmyra continued to function as a military and caravan staging post, despite major changes in dynastic rulers and invasions over the centuries: notably the Muslim Arabs in 634 AD and Tamerlane in 1401 AD. The importance of Palmyra declined significantly during the Ottoman period and during the 19th century intrepid travellers trying to visit the ruins were in constant danger of attack from local tribes.

A large warehouse full of architectural salvage, in Richmond since 1939 and in this location since 1993. The previous occupant of this building was a textile mill, which closed around 1990. The building was built in the 1910s.
