Built between 2002 and 2004, this Contemporary museum was designed by Boora Architects, with assistance from Blackburn Architects, to house the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, a museum of conscience which commemorates and interprets the history of the Underground Railroad that enslaved people of color in the Southern United States prior to the American Civil War and Emancipation Proclamation utilized to escape to freedom in the Northern United States and Canada. The building consists of three wings, which represent three aspects of the character of the people whom traveled on the Underground Railroad - Perseverance, Courage, and Cooperation. The exterior of the wings feature copper panels and glass curtain walls on the north and south facades, with undulating rough-hewn travertine walls on the east and west facades of each wing, with two exterior passageways between the central wing and the east and west wings. Inside, the museum features soaring lobbies and gallery spaces, and houses artifacts and exhibits associated with the Underground Railroad. One of the most notable artifacts on display is a former Slave Pen, which is a two-story 19th Century log building, once owned by slave trader Captain John Anderson. It was originally located in rural Mason County, Kentucky, which was disassembled and relocated to a gallery space inside the museum, where it now sits on display for visitors. The museum anchors the middle section of The Banks, a riverfront development in Downtown Cincinnati, and is prominently sited north of the Roebling Bridge, being highly visible from the Ohio River and Kentucky, symbolizing the role that the Greater Cincinnati region played in the Underground Railroad, as well as the way that the north bank of the Ohio River symbolized a sense of freedom and safety for those seeking freedom. The museum's exhibits offer powerful insights into the struggle by oppressed groups in the past, present, and future, centering the experiences of people of color, and challenges visitors to contemplate what freedom truly means to them.

the seminarium is the result of a competition won by the "golden boys"
who in the sixties swept the danish competitions and more than once made several entries receiving both first and second prize!
the team was later to built Herlev Amtssygehus
completed in 1963 the complex crowns a small hill and carefully sitting in the ondulating landscape enriches the site on the outskirts of small town Holbæk
the landscaping by Sven Hansen is as delicate as the buildings and every detail has been cared for - even the bicycle stalls now halfways absorbed by the wood
Bornebusch - who was responsible for the realisation of Holbæk seminarium - was later when on his own to turn to wooden small scale projects (among other things) maintaining the same high standards (see the Bornebusch album)

Summer 2005: My house under serious renovation - note the laptop sharing space with the chop saw, just as an architect's office should be!
Sitting in what will be the kitchen. That stupid pendant fixture is now in the dumpster, as is the awful brass fireplace surround. We're going mid-century modern on this one....

the comments I have added to some of my photos can be read together as a kind of mangled, yet surprisingly brief essay on hansen. repetitious and opinionated, it reflects the writer above his subject, but until someone does some serious research on hansen, a complete lack of competition makes me immune to criticism. enjoy :)
