The distance between the Hotel Gasthaus Kreuze where we stayed one night in Riedern am Wald, Germany, and Hallau in Switzerland, via Untermettingen (Germany) is approximately 15–20 kilometres (9–12 miles), depending on the specific route.

The drive typically takes about 20–25 minutes under normal traffic conditions.

Riedern am Wald is part of the Ühlingen-Birkendorf municipality in the Southern Black Forest, located close to the Swiss border, making this a relatively short and scenic cross-border journey.

Thac Bac Waterfall (Silver Waterfall) is an impressive 200m high waterfall in Ô Quí Hồ, Tỉnh Lào Cai province, Vietnam. It is conveniently located right next to National Highway 4D, just 15kms from Sapa. The altitude at the top of the waterfall is 2,000masl and the altitude at the bridge on O Quy Ho pass is 1,800masl. The water flows down in a series of steps with a pathway running up the hill with several bridges crossing the stream at various intervals

The drive from Sapa to the waterfall is very scenic, towering mountains, terraced fields rice and other crops as well as lush rainforest vegetation delight the eye.

We were extremely fortunate to see the Silver Waterfall in full flow, after very heavy rain in the province just a day or two before our arrival.

The Rhine Falls, at elevation 364m, are located near Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland and are Europe's most powerful waterfall. Spanning 150 m in width and with a single drop of 23 m in height, the falls showcase a remarkable display of natural force.

The falls have an average flow rate of 250 m3/s (8,800 cu ft/s) during winter and 600 m3/s (21,000 cu ft/s) during summer.

The highest flow ever measured was 1,250 cubic metres per second (44,000 cu ft/s) in 1965, and the lowest, 95 cubic metres per second (3,400 cu ft/s) in 1921.

The Rhine Falls formed 14,000 to 17,000 years ago by erosion-resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed. The first glacial advances created today's landforms approximately 500,000 years ago.

The falls are divided by a central rock known as the Rhine Falls Rocks (Rheinfallfelsen). It's the remnant of the original limestone cliff flanking the former channel.

Visitors can access this rock via boat trips, offering an up-close experience of the cascading waters.

The surrounding area is equipped with viewing platforms that provide various perspectives of the falls, and the nearby historic castles of Wörth and Laufen add charm to the natural beauty of this picturesque area.

The site is well-developed for tourism, featuring illuminated falls at night, guided tours, and boat trips that allow visitors to experience the falls from different vantage points.

Annually, the Rhine Falls attract over one million visitors, making it one of Switzerland's major tourist attractions.

Raintrees Native and Rainforest Gardens - Diamond Beach, NSW

During 2019 much of the NSW Mid North Coast experienced arguably one of the worst extended droughts and subsequent bushfire seasons since the 1788 British colonisation of Australia. During 2019 the annual rainfall recorded on the lower Mid North Coast of NSW was just 478 mm, as compared to normal years where annual rainfall ranges from 1200 to 1600mm per year.

This event significantly impacted Raintrees Native and Rainforest Gardens, a rainforest arboretum at Diamond Beach.

Many trees died but significant numbers of planted Archontophoenix cunninghamiana - Bangalow Palms wilted causing them to drop over in the crownshaft resulting in a phenomenon called 'Crown Collapse'. Once the crown and emerging fronds suffer 'Crown Collapse' its only a matter of time before the entire crown and fronds of the palm dry out and die.

At Raintrees Native and Rainforest Gardens this event resulted in near on 100 palms dying, many at least 8-10m tall.

Most of the deaths occurred here in the area which has come to be known as the Forest of Conspiracy so named as the drought of 2019 coincided with the emergence of many conspiracy theories which became associated with the Trump administration in the USA from 2016 to 2020.

With so many dead palms presenting a serious fire risk it became necessary to cut them down during February March of 2020. When this task was complete the entire forest here was almost bare of plants. With the drought effectively breaking on January 8th 2020 It was decided that no more Bangalow Palms would be planted here and instead, the area which was enclosed by a circular track, came to be known as Fake News Loop. This area was replanted in March April with hardy subtropical and dry rainforest species.

With so many dead palms, before any planting could occur, it became necessary to burn the fronds and trunks to avoid further fire risk in the coming spring. An area was cleared out and made safe for burning. That area became known as Cove 19. At the time NSW was subject to strict Covid 19 socialisation restrictions. Our neighbours nevertheless were undeterred and when they saw the fires happening, they'd visit with a bottle of red wine and we would sit around the fire, socially distanced of course.

This led to plans to eventually pave this area and build seating, making it a permanent social space in the midst of the Forest of Conspiracy.

The paving and construction of seating was finally completed in May of 2025, though some landscaping still remains.

Cove 19 is now a peaceful place of retreat in the middle of the forest, a place I now enjoy visiting most days.

Google Lens suggested that this plant could be Cannabis sativa - Marijuana ??

Can anyone confirm that. I didn't think at the time that it was some sort of Bamboo. There are other plants that can be mistaken for Cannabis sativa, which is actually not legally able to be grown in Vietnam. This clump was near a main tourist walking pathway which makes me suspect that perhaps it's a look alike plant.

ID assistance appreciated.

Having driven the short distance from Untermettingen we finally crossed the Swiss Border with Germany here at Hallau.

With a full day's drive ahead of us to reach Vaduz in Leichtenstein today, it was time to fill our car's petrol tank.

That may sound like a simple task, but it proved difficult due to our lack of familiarity with the automatic bowser we had stopped at in order to refuel.

Fortunately, being a Sunday there was just a few cars on the road, so our problem didn't cause anyone to be held up.

Thankfully a nice man who had watched our attempts crossed the road and assisted us to complete a full refueling operation.

Hallau is a picturesque village in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, known for its scenic vineyards, charming cultural landmarks, and tranquil atmosphere. Located in the Klettgau region near the German border, it’s renowned as the wine capital of Schaffhausen, with its vineyards producing exceptional wines, particularly from the Riesling variety. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, wine tastings, and breathtaking views of the vine-covered hills.

One of Hallau’s cultural highlights is the historic St. Peter and Paul Church, which dates to the 13th century. Its intricate stained-glass windows and peaceful setting make it a must-see for history enthusiasts. Additionally, the area is ideal for outdoor activities, offering a range of hiking and biking trails with stunning views of the Rhine Valley and surrounding Swiss countryside.

The local cuisine in Hallau features Swiss classics like cheese fondue and raclette, paired with the village’s fine wines. Several cozy restaurants serve fresh, locally sourced dishes. For accommodation, Hallau offers options ranging from charming guesthouses to comfortable hotels, many with views of the vineyards and countryside.

Hallau is easily accessible by public transport and scenic drives. It also serves as a great base for exploring nearby attractions, such as the Rhine Falls, and the medieval town of Stein am Rhein.
