Watching Petar Puskarich's presentation on running AppleWorks on the Apple II+ from the Byte Cellar during KansasFest 2022.

My old Apple IIe. Purchased back in early 1986. Oddly, I sold my Amiga 1000 and got this. Had it until late 1986 when I sold it and moved to an Atari 520ST. Of note, this unit had a Mockingboard C soundcard as well as an Apple UniDisk 3.5" drive and controller.

Celle-ci est une ancienne société de développement et d'édition de jeux vidéo américaine. Elle est fondée en 1979 par Joel Billings qui a alors pour objectif d’adapter son loisir favori, les jeux de guerre, en jeu vidéo.

I was a Commodore user and never had much experience with the Apple II world. I'm sure that these are digitized on archive.org or similar sites but if anyone would like these they're at the Habitat For Humanity ReStore in Westminster, MD.

Une partie de ma collection qui a bien augmenté depuis cette photo.

Il y a un peu de tout :

This is a shot of the Apple II test house on the Nevada test site. The house was subjected to an atomic bomb blast (codenamed Apple II) during 1955, meant to test the civil effects of weapons. Note the graffiti of Garfield in the top window. The security on the test site is pretty tight, but peace protesters have been conducting 'back field actions' inside the perimeter for years now.

Write Your Own Adventure Programs For Your Microcomputer was a book which showed you how to write text adventures in BASIC for your home computer. It contained a step by step guide which culminated in you producing a 64 location adventure called Haunted House. Written by Jenny Tyler and Les Howarth, it was released by Usborne in 1983. The book included adaptions for the program to run on the ZX Spectrum 48K / Timex 2000, TRS-80, Apple, Dragon 32, VIC-20, BBC Micro, Commodore PET, Oric and a specially adapted smaller version for the 16K ZX81 / Timex 1000 by Chris Oxlade.

I like old computers. But I have a teeny-tiny home office, so I can't have all of them set up all the time; I need to multi-task. What to do? Organize them into the Retrocomputing Closet of Doom, so I have easy access to each piece whenever I fancy pulling it out!

From bottom to top: MicroVAX 3100, Apple ][ Plus, Dell Optiplex PII, Apple IIgs, Commodore 64, VT320 terminal, Sun SPARCstation LX, and an overabundance of keyboards, keyboards, keyboards.

The scary thing is, everything works.

This is a shot from inside the Apple II test house, on the Nevada test site. The house was one of several set up to measure the effects of a 29 kiloton explosion in 1955 (that's roughly one and a half times as powerful as the Hiroshima explosion). Mannequins were placed inside the house to see how people and the structure itself would fare in an atomic blast. This house survived, although others closer to the blast were destroyed.

See www.penmachine.com/geekyderek.html for an explanation. And don't forget the Photoshopped version. I was about sixteen years old, setting up a booth at the Vancouver computer fair for the Apple Alliance computer club.

IMG_0817CrS Eds Historic Apple II Computer

This picture is from 1985 ish. Apple II Plus. My dad bought it for us in 1982. He was going to buy us a Radio Shack computer but we complained loudly and he listened, even though this unit was a lot more money. Recently he said it was one of the best purchases he made and my mom said she lost new living room furniture because of this computer but does not regret it.

We jammed the computer with whatever we could get our hands on. 32K memory, CPM card, clock card, 80 column display card, game controller card. Note the 300 baud Hayes modem on the left. PR#6 FTW.

Unfortunately my Dad threw it out sometime in the 90's after we were all moved out of the house.

[UPDATE] My dad didn't throw it out!!!!

It’s been five years since my last foray into the weird world of TGIMBOEJ. During that time, I managed to put aside a decent collection of electronic detritus for inclusion in my second box.

The contents of Prairie Oyster 2 include such items as a vintage Sony transistor radio, a fully functional Casio Data Bank DC-7800, a pair of seemingly dead Amprobe AC volt-ammeters, a homemade audio amplifier, several mystery circuit boards, a Northern Telecom push-to-talk telephone handset, a second generation iPod touch with a shattered screen, and other wonderful goodies.

This awesome pile of crap will be finding its way to Toronto and into the capable hands of Erin “Robotgrrl” Kennedy.

***Sorry for the long post but I figured I should put this in here since I did spend half the night playing the game and finally got this screen.***

"Freedom" is suposedly about a person (male or female) escape slavery to "freedom". The game is supposed to be for 5th - 9th graders. It is also supposedly very hard. So... this game has a lot of interesting controversy. This game got discontinued after one year of sales so naturally I am a curious little critter especially with this damn cold I got from the hubby.

... and yes, this game is hella hard and I have a degree in history with some quarters of antebellum south and the restoration history.

This game is pretty sad. It paints a picture of all the scenarios of where slaves come from. Your family history pretty much includes slaves being captured from Africa to were free but captured to be enslaved anyway. I think the game people were trying too hard to squeeze the various methods of enslavements on one caption screen personally. That part is kind of off putting and probably would frighten any 10 year old kid if they have to play this game unsupervised. Hell... hearing grandpa's story was pretty frightening too. He tried to escape and failed so the owner cut his feet off so he can't run away! How he stay alive as a grandfather in the plantation is of course unknown since you are going to run away anyway.

Even though there is a "resume journey" part there is no actual save button! Before this point I keep getting recaptured and brought back to be sold, although I did manage to drown twice and once fall into a hole and died.

However, if you are lucky and the character that you have *just* happens to be literate AND able to swim you can make it through, although I only got that lucky combination once and you have to be female. This is where I got the screen here.

If you are male you are more likely to get a pass and you might be able to knock the patrollers unconscious more often if you choose to fight them. If you are female you are just a *tad* more likely to be literate (only happened twice) but you can't really fight back.

Sometimes you get can't read or write AND can't swim. If you get that combo restart the game. You just can't win with that combo. Believe me I tried. :(

If you actually wanna play this ancient game here (at least 24 years old) are some tips to actually get freedom:

***Important!!!! In the 2 Youtube videos that I saw NONE of the people actually asked the elders at the part "Do yuh have anythin' that'd help me?" TWICE. If you ask them twice they will give you everything they have, including the pepper (grandpa), the knife and food (aunt Nancy), twine and fishing hooks (uncle Virgil), and the herbs (aunt Molly). Pretty much keep asking them stuff until they have nothing left to give. ***

1) You don't need literacy to win the game although it doesn't hurt either. Literacy I think is probably more important if you are playing scenario #1 as there are lots of directions that you have to go from one safe house to another. You do need to however have the can swim part. If you can't swim it doesn't matter how shallow the river is, if you try to cross it you die. That is it. There seems to be no trouble with canals though, but still. One of the times I drowned because I had to cross a river. I was surrounded and had to make a move any move to get out and it is to drown. Sucks.

2) The game will have given you $21 if you talked to all the elders. I never used any money in the game yet for anything useful. No one tried to sell me anything or the stores would even let me in so... I only got into a situation where money was used as a possible bribe. I just stupidly parted with $3 out of $21 with nothing interesting other than "Thanks for the money. Now scram!".

3) If you don't have to knock on any doors don't. Usually people either chase you away (sometimes with food) or worse: call the patrol people to come after you (that happened 3 times to me). Usually if the people call the patrols nearby you are pretty much captured. BUT If you find a guy with a lantern and the light is ON then you can knock and enter. I just avoided any villages. Nothing came good for me trying to knock there. I did see a saw mill once and that was ok but in general people just want to get rid of you.

4) Sometimes the game goes into a loop of having a "friendly stranger" take you in. I got into that loop twice. While it is nice to have someone take you in and feeding you seriously you don't need to keep going there back and forth and waste your time. *Sometimes* the kindly stranger will have instructions for you to go to a particular area but I think it depends on where you are.

I haven't tried the other hardness levels other than easy #4 which is pretty much go to the midwest to escape. #1 is pretty easy too and I actually got pretty far from there, but not sure what "freedom" is to that level yet because it keeps having me go from one safe house to another in a loop until I was captured again. #3 the hardest level pretty much has you in the middle of the south try to go to the same place as #1 which is to the midwest.

I hope this weird guide will help anyone who tries to play the game and get frustrated!

Complete Apple IIe system at Free Geek Vancouver. Very reasonable price IMO. Only problem was the C key was broken - you'd have to glue it back, the actual key was snapped off (not just the key cover coming off).

Oh and yes, those are the manuals sitting on top of the monitor.
