sometimes the appearances are not something to run away from

Dairy is the main agricultural industry in Bas-Saint-Laurent and there were lots of these white-wrapped bales and tall silos around to photograph. Bales like these will certainly make more appearances in coming images.

Bas-Saint-Laurent, Québec, Canada.

I wrote a blog post about my December 2022 photographic trip to the rural areas of Chaudière-Appalaches (Beauce) and Bas-Saint-Laurent, south and east of Québec City. If you'd like to see some behind the scene shots, video and read some stories about how I shot these images, take a look.

If you'd like to see the rest of the images from this trip, take a look at my Québec album and if you'd like to see the series within the series - the croix de chemin - there's an album for them, as well.

A spiders web covered in tiny water droplets

To be present invisibly in each of your acts.

Enthusiastically inhabit its crowds.

..of monumental daily revelries ..

..with the anonymous mask of silence.

Exercise the Art of discretion.

..which consists of attending the disguise of appearances ..

... dressing with the skin of the superficial.

To come to an understanding of the world around me ..

of the why of what happened to the landscape of existence.

Burned too often with selfishness.

..with that classic bonfire of poverty of vanities, weak embers

..about which the passing of time ..

... it will drop its inexorable slab of oblivion.

By weight of absolute certainty.

Play sometime, to teach my name to the real thing.

... like a whispered distant music that "baffles" you with harmony ...

..but without getting caught by anyone.

I do not want him to touch me, or to assure that I belong to him.

..not let me guess even from a glance ..

..or that I am hers in decadent possessive.

I love to lose myself in the midst of people, to the smell of human tides ... ... to write about them while the crowd drowns me.

Continue with this homage chronicler walk ..

..the passage of her footprints.

Admire how it is that I do not know so extraordinary.

..that they say is to be normal, conventional ..

.. worrying about the routines of those who have been awarded ..

..with the soul in privilege of having her luminous health ..

..in the form of a sheltered family, a job of the hours ..

..a home of refuge.

Given my special condition of the heart ..

that non-chosen naming of birth ..

... he gave me the testimony of life deed.

From a unique point of view ..

..the one from whom can unlace from his hands ..

..at any moment of freedom.

That she is at the same time hurt and gift for wisdom of pain.

..without any merit of joy

..that knowledge that gives the scarred promise of distance.

I like being with you, without you knowing that I am.

..because I will be forever conjugated ..

..of the Being remaining loved.

Sun and rain make these mystical appearances.

Being introduced to the totality of reality is not without consequences for one’s relationship with it. If we do not perceive its meaning, reality does not move us to the point of becoming interesting to us. This is the origin of nihilism, of that position that ends in boredom, because nothing arouses my interest. We thought that reality could go on being attractive even without a meaning, reduced to mere appearances, and that young people could be interested in transmitting mere notions and data, without communicating a theory about meaning. But this did not happen. With the reduction of reality to its immediate aspect, to appearances, a new form of nihilism has appeared, a weak, jovial, cheerful one, in which desire is not awakened, curiosity is not awakened. Now, only he who manages to arouse the self from this feebleness will be able to make a contribution to the dramatic situation in which we find ourselves.

Contrary to appearances, this is a candid and not posed!

A tabby cat is a domestic cat with a recognizable coat pattern characterized by stripes, spots, or swirls. This pattern can appear in various colors, including shades of brown, gray, and black. Tabby cats often have an "M" shape on their foreheads and dark lines around their eyes, along with a striped tail. They can be found in different breeds, such as the American Shorthair, British Shorthair, and Maine Coon, as well as in mixed-breed cats. Tabby cats are beloved for their unique and appealing appearances, and they are known to have friendly and playful personalities, making them popular choices as pets.

Your 'Comments' do not always appear in 'Notifications' or Flickr mail, so, I am sorry for any delay in responding. Often your 'Comment' is only spotted 'On the Page' on the day, that I see it. (seen ONLY when replying to someone HAS 'Commented' on the image, and I see a notification)

Even with the delivery of over 70 Vectrons, the USSR built VR Sr1 fleet still remains in frontline service in Finland. Predominantly on freight but still with occasional passenger appearances and one regular turn between Iisalmi and Ylivieska.

Running around 20 minutes late, 3080 approaches Toijala with a rake of Russian looking empty wood wagons forming T 20316 from Kouvola to Tampere.

An American Belted Kingfisher has been present in Lancashire since the 8 November but it has been very elusive and erratic in its appearances, and has been seen in three different locations. I think this is only the fifth individual to have reached Britain, though there have been a further three or four in Ireland. I travelled across to Lancashire this morning and managed to see it on the River Darwen near Samlesbury. It showed well, but it was a bit too distant for my camera, so here's a similar male bird I took in British Columbia a year or two back.

The Belted Kingfisher is a giant in comparison with the diminutive European Kingfisher, which weighs about 40g whereas the Belted Kingfisher is nearly four times heavier at 150g. It often sits on conspicuous perches and draws attention to itself with a loud call which sounds like an old-fashioned football rattle (does anyone remember those?).

The scientific name Megaceryle alcyon has its roots in Greek mythology. Alcyone was one of the seven sisters, or Pleiades (the tight clustered constellation easily visible in northern skies), and daughter of Aeolus, ruler of the four winds. Alcyone married Ceyx but they vexed the Gods by jokingly calling each other Zeus and Hera. Zeus drowned Ceyx in a storm and Alcyone threw herself into the sea in grief, but was transformed into a Kingfisher. Legend has it that Alcyone builds a nest of fish bones that floats on the sea, and her mother Aeolus (Ruler of the winds) calms the sea for 14 days around the winter solstice to allow her daughter to nest undisturbed. This is the origin of the term Halcyon Days. Ceryle was a bird mentioned by Aristotle and other authors but has not been identified. It is probably mythical and is associated with Alcyone. The Mega part of Megaceryle just means massive.

So, the little bits of blue sky showed themselves only for a brief photo opportunity. Otherwise I had perfect weather - snow and sleet (fortunately it didn’t stick), which means that I had the mountain all to myself 😅. Only after about four hours did I meet two other hikers, which I think is rather unusual for this area.

Despite appearances these were concrete sleepers and not wood. We had to negotiate fire ants at one stage to get to our coffee!

Don't be deceived by appearances. This toadstool invests a lot of energy into having things look pretty to those who notice her, but don't be fooled; she's a poisonous little fungus.

Another common Penstemon seen in our area in early June is the Lilac-flowered Beardtongue, Penstemon gracilis. Despite appearances, this plant does not devour insects. It seems that overnight dew collected on the plant's hairy surfaces, trapping many tiny flies, including midges, mosquitoes, and little black things with wings. It was tempting to remove them digitally, but in the end I decided to stick with reality.

"Perfection" is something we imagine, an aesthetic standard that - if pursued relentlessly with intent to remove all perceived flaws - can result in unreal, sterile images that may be beautiful individually but ultimately fail to satisfy. It's a personal choice. I'm not at all interested in AI options, including dropping a "better" sky into one of my landscape shots. There's a lot of deception going on right now - people using AI to generate artificial images and not disclosing. It pisses me off.

If Lincoln were alive today, photo editors would remove the wart. If Cleopatra were alive today, they would straighten her nose. I prefer my flowers (and people, and other photo subjects) with their "flaws": there is beauty in "imperfection", and it's more interesting, too.

This birding trip was heavy in Northern Harrier appearances and Bald Eagles. My previous Harrier post was an unusual encounter, but this one was too from the standpoint one rarely sees both sexes together and this one really showcases the differences in coloration and size. The male is smaller and has a different eye color in addition to the plumage distinctions. (A young male may look a lot like the female but his eye color will be lighter.) Over the years I've grown to appreciate owl like look and clever human avoidance capabilities.Kind of becoming a Harrier fan.

Many thanks for every kind comment, fave, your encouraging words, and the inspiration of your fine photography, my Flickr friends! You make my day every day!

In spite of all appearances, and although this is an arachnid, it isn't a spider. It's a ' harvestman ' which is a species of opilionid, phylangium opilio. I hadn't seen one at all this year until yesterday, and they used to be so common when I was a child. They are in fact nocturnal so this one was dozing the day away on a flag iris leaf. As it was very hot yesterday, I do hope it didn't get fried.

above is macro of stained glass window at church. Being pretty is not all life is about. Many are so beautiful inside though externally not so. Do you turn from LIFE's real beauties due to transparency of mere outside appearances? Pray with me: Let us mature and understand YOUR ways. Thanks for this sage moment where I glimpse YOUR wisdom fine.

Appearances are deceiving, whilst this bears the "Little Orange" livery all the small E200s are now for the Wokingham Locals. Somewhat annoyingly this route doesn't accept Reading issued area tickets even though both terminis of the route are the in the "Network" zone. Similar oddities exist with the 53 (Slough-Bracknell) where the 702/3 accept the Reading Issues tickets but the 53 does not.

The common names come from similar appearances to other species that are not closely related and to the allergic response to the urushiol. Poison oak is not an oak (Quercus, family Fagaceae), but this common name comes from the leaves' resemblance to white oak (Quercus alba) leaves, while poison ivy is not an ivy (Hedera, family Araliaceae), but has a superficially similar growth form. Technically, the plants do not contain a poison; they contain a potent allergen.

Maserati is an Italian automobile manufacturer based in Modena . The company was founded in Bologna in 1914. Today, the brand belongs to the global manufacturer Stellantis . Its trademark is a trident, modeled after the one on the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna .

Maserati racing cars were successful in the 1950s; among other achievements, Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1957 Formula One World Championship in a 250F . Maserati has traditionally been a competitor of Ferrari , but from 1997 to 2005 it was a subsidiary of Ferrari within the Fiat Group, later Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

Following the merger of FCA and the PSA Group (Peugeot SA) on January 16, 2021 to form Stellantis , Maserati is the only brand in the "luxury" segment of the new group, with its own global sales organization separate from the multi-brand sales through the national Stellantis organizations, such as Stellantis Deutschland GmbH (based in Rüsselsheim).

Founded in Bologna on December 1, 1914, the Società Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati (SA Officine Alfieri Maserati) was a family business. Its founder was Alfieri Maserati . Three of his six brothers later joined the company.

Carlo (1881–1910), Bindo (1883–1980), Alfieri (1887–1932) [ 4 ] , Mario (1890–1981), Ettore (1894–1990) and Ernesto Maserati (1898–1975) were born in the Lombard town of Voghera . The parents of the siblings, who became known as the Fratelli Maserati (Maserati Brothers), were Rudolfo and Carolina Maserati. Their father worked as a railway engineer. With the exception of Mario Maserati, who worked as a painter, all the Maserati brothers developed an affinity for technology. [ 5 ]

Carlo Maserati built his first motorcycle in 1898, which he used to participate in several races. At the beginning of the 20th century, he became a test and racing driver for Fiat and worked for a time with Vincenzo Lancia . In 1903, he moved to Isotta Fraschini , in 1907 to Bianchi , and in 1909 to Junior . Carlo Maserati died of tuberculosis in 1910. [ 5 ]

Alfieri and Bindo Maserati followed their brother Carlo to Isotta Fraschini in 1903. In 1910, they went to Argentina on behalf of the Milanese car manufacturer to work at the Isotta branch there. In Buenos Aires, Alfieri designed a racing car using Isotta technology, which he himself used in motor races, but the Maserati brothers returned to Italy as early as 1914.

On December 1, 1914, Alfieri Maserati founded his own company in Bologna, where customer cars from Isotta Fraschini were to be prepared for racing. With Italy's entry into the First World War, the workshop's activities largely ceased. During this time, Alfieri Maserati developed spark plugs, while his brother Ernesto, who had initially also worked for Alfieri, designed aircraft engines for Franco Tosi during the war . [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ 7 ]

Beginnings in motorsport

Maserati 8CM

After the war, Alfieri, Ernesto, and Ettore Maserati resumed their workshop operations. They designed several racing cars for Isotta Fraschini [ 6 ] [ 8 ] and, from 1922, for Diatto , achieving some success in Grand Prix races. When Diatto withdrew from motor racing in 1925, the Maserati brothers took over the design work. This project resulted in the Maserati Tipo 26 , the first racing car to bear the Maserati name. [ 7 ] In April 1926, the car driven by Alfieri Maserati achieved the company's first class victory in the 1.5-liter class at the Targa Florio . After initially only sporadic further racing appearances, Maserati participated regularly in motorsport events from 1929 onwards. The company maintained a factory team but also sold its vehicles to independent customers. With the introduction of the Maserati Tipo 6CM in 1936, sustained success followed; Maserati won a total of 19 races before the outbreak of the Second World War . [ 6 ]

The Orsi era: Racing successes and the first road-going sports cars

In 1932, Alfieri Maserati died at the age of 44 from the long-term effects of a racing accident. Subsequently, Bindo Maserati, who had previously worked at Isotta Fraschini, took over the management of Officine Alfieri Maserati, while Ettore was responsible for development and administration. [ 9 ]

Despite the racing successes, the company never regained the dynamism it had enjoyed during Alfieri Maserati's lifetime. [ 9 ] In 1937, the remaining Maserati brothers sold the company to Adolfo Orsi , an industrialist from Modena who owned several steel mills and manufactured agricultural and machine tools in his hometown. [ 9 ] Orsi primarily wanted to use Maserati's racing successes for advertising purposes for his other businesses. [ 10 ] Until the post-war period, the Maserati name appeared not only on automobiles but also on technical equipment produced by the Orsi Group. During this time, Maserati also manufactured motorcycles, among other things. The Maserati brothers Bindo, Ernesto, and Ettore remained with the company as consultants for ten years, and its headquarters were moved to Modena in the early 1940s. In 1947 they separated from Maserati and founded a competing company, Officine Specializzata Costruzioni Automobili (OSCA), in Bologna.

After the end of World War II, the Orsi Group faced economic and political difficulties. These included numerous, sometimes violent, strikes by the workforce, which also led to the temporary closure of the Maserati factory. In 1950, the group underwent a restructuring, resulting in the spin-off of Maserati. From then on, Adolfo Orsi and his son Omar were solely responsible for managing the racing car manufacturer, while the other companies within the group were managed by Orsi's siblings.

Maserati 250F

After the turmoil of the early post-war period subsided, Maserati established itself as a major player in motor racing during the 1950s. This process was facilitated by the withdrawal of the previously dominant Alfa Romeo team. The Maserati 250F, designed in 1953 , was one of the most widely used Formula One cars of its generation; it competed in 46 World Championship races and numerous non-championship Formula One events until 1960. [ 11 ] Maserati regularly fielded a factory team during these years; in addition, numerous private drivers entered Maserati-designed cars. In 1957, Juan Manuel Fangio won the Drivers' World Championship with the Maserati factory team; it was Fangio's fifth world title. In 1958, Maserati withdrew from Formula One for financial reasons. Customer cars, however, remained in use until 1960, and Maserati engines could be found in Cooper's Formula 1 cars until the late 1960s . After a few years without motorsport involvement, Maserati returned to sports car racing success in the early 1960s with cars like the Tipo 61 ("Birdcage") ...Wikipedia

Just because you have a twisted mind, it doesn't mean you're screwed...

Contrary to appearances from the rough estate tracks in the glen, Knoydart is not linked to the mainland public road system, being accessible only by boat or on foot. This evening view from above Mam Barrisdale on the slopes of the Munro Ladhar Bheinn was taken around 9pm when the sun briefly appeared from behind the clouds to light up the Corbett on the right, Sgurr a'Choire-bheithe. The purpose of the expedition, the Graham Slat Bheinn is further back to its left, its west ridge the line of ascent earlier in the day, also highlighted by the sun's rays.

I've always said I could talk to anyone. It's just a matter of finding something in common, although it hasn't always gone so well if the subject is about Brexit or Boris. But here I spied a bottle of Jagermeister, neatly packed in a case in this wild camper's cart. His name was John, a joiner from Livingstone, camped out above the sandy beach overlooking Loch Moidart and Castle Tioram. A better wild camp location is hard to imagine.

It was the Jagermeister that kicked off the conversation and I was invited to take a seat by the camp fireside whilst John poured out a Jaegerbomb for each of us, and picked some flesh off some chicken drummers for Effie to have a wee snack.

Yes, we talked about the castle and discussed amazing hidden gem locations to camp in the area as the sun set over the castle and the midges started to bite. He'll move on in the morning and might never see this photo of himself, which would be a shame. It's so interesting to talk to people who some might avoid because of their looks. And like John I think they take an excellent portrait.

Does he look like Michael Schumacher under that beard?

Cicko's first year on Earth, after being left stranded inside the shoebox near our house, approximately 2 days after being given birth.

It seems he is enjoying his first days of his life, which he really do. Even though he doesn't know where his mother is, or can't comprehend what the presence of mother brings, nor does he resent or blame anyone responsible for his shoebox thing, he is still happy little boy.

These were insightful times, watching him grow and learn about life, without someone to learn from, except couple of human beings, different from his kind.

His instincts, and how God have created him, were always on spot. No problems there: catching what cat is supposed to catch, running, playing, games, toys, friskiness, naughtiness, restlessness...

The only problem I am seeing is with the relationship with other cats, that come to our house from time to time. Cicko does not know how to handle that yet. He haven't had the chance to learn from anyone, and in the pressence of them, he does know how to make a stand... Usually, he rather leaves, or give his best sleeping spots to the temporary newcomers of his kind.

Also, when other cats are present, he is having a problem with eating... He needs peace to eat. He is constantly looking around while other csts are in viscinity... seems like he can't put his guard down.

He is almost one year old by now, and we are looking forward on his progress.

Not to mention all the medical trouble we had with him. On this particular day when this photo was taken, on this same spot, he was throwing up, at least 6-7 times, and his belly was inflated, his eyes like he's dying, face sad, and he was constantly finding place to hide, to sleep...like he was finding place to sleep forever. Eyes were telling us everything.

But tjen the sun came onto his life, amd we couldn't believe what a shift in the mood occured. My God, he became the happiest little lad in the timespace of half a day.

Happy birthday, Cicko.

I have talked many times about the struggles of travel landscape photography. It has been a hell of a learning process for me. I think it even shaped my personality into an eve keeled one. I started as an impatient youngster, trying to bend the conditions to my liking, often ending frustrated. As time progressed, I learned to adjust and to work with the conditions.

I want to talk a bit about our trip to the rocky mountains of Colorado a couple of years ago. After a good bit of research and planning, my wife and I were able to get vacation days lined up for the last week of September and the first week of October. As we reached the San Juan mountains, we realized that we were late by at least a week, a lot of the trees were missing their leaves. We also learned that the two weeks were going to be stormy with an overcast sky and expected rain.

The conditions were terrible but I knew one thing from my experience shooting the Sierras, mountains and clouds is an excellent mix. They change constantly, and if you stick with it, you can come out with some fantastic compositions. The subject of today's shot is the San Juan Mountain peak from the last dollar road. The mountain peaks were covered by the clouds for most of the drive but opened up sporadically, and I utilized one of those moments to capture this beautiful scene with the road snaking through the mountain pass. The Peaks were showing their presence before disappearing behind cloud cover and rain threatening to unleash any minute. I love this shot because it embodies everything about the mountains, the unpredictability, the imposing structures that stood the test of time, and more than anything the sheer beauty of nature.

Class 86 appearances on railtours in the 1990's were not common as they were working all place over the electified network.

When they did appear they were usually the class 86/6 sub group which were no longer passenger engines so were obviously rarer.

Pathfinders Crewe Cruisers on 21st August 1994 saw a scruffy 86606 and 620 arrive at Piccadilly with one of the many mini-tours on offer that day.

I only needed the one, 86639 and it eluded me many times, so even though it still exists I know it will never work again so that is it, I had 99 of them.

You can't win them all!
