Library

The library is after the church the second most important room of a Benedictine monastery.

The Melker library is divided into two main rooms that are equipped with 1731-1732 by Paul Troger painted ceiling frescoes. The fresco in the larger of the two rooms represents a spiritual counterpoint to the ceiling fresco in the Marble Hall. It shows an allegory of faith, a woman who holds the book with seven seals, the Lamb of the Apocalypse and a shield with the Spirit dove, surrounded by angels and allegorical personifications of the four cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. The architectural painting then again stems from Gaetano Fanti.

Dark wood with inlays and the attuned to this uniformly golden brown color of the spines determine the impressive and harmonious spatial experience.

Since the main room is kept quite dark, in the shelves hidden doors can be opened to give the students the opportunity to step into the light. On the upper floor - closed to the public - two reading rooms have been established. They are decorated with frescoes by Johann Bergl. The library contains about 1800 manuscripts from the 9th century, including a duplicate of Virgil from the 10th to 11th century. Only in 1997, a fragment of a duplicate of the Nibelungenlied (Song of the Nibelungs) from the 13th century was discovered. Additionally there are 750 incunabula. Overall, the library contains about 100,000 volumes. Exhibited were recently, for example, two copies of the by Anton Koberger printed Schedel's World Chronicle.

In 2009, the Library exhibition was dedicated to the Year of Astronomy and displayed manuscripts, books and historical instruments from the collections of the monastery, complemented by an exhibition of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) on modern astronomy of the 21st century.

Bibliothek

Jahrhunderts.

"Fresh Works VII" Juried Exhibition in Pleasanton

My oil painting, The March of Time, was accepted to a juried exhibition, titled "Fresh Works VII" in Harrington Gallery at Firehouse Arts Center, Pleasanton.

Fresh Works VII Opens at the Harrington Gallery [Independent News]

The Harrington Gallery at the Firehouse Arts Center announces the opening of the Fresh Works VII Annual Open Juried Fine Arts Exhibition on Saturday, May 6. The show includes an interesting and eclectic variety of pieces, including paintings in oil, watercolor, and acrylic, drawing in pencil and other media, sculpture, collage, and photography.

The show will be on display from opening day through June 3 during regular gallery hours, as well as two hours before shows in the Firehouse Theater with a paid ticket. Sixty-six artists were accepted this year from throughout the greater Bay Area and Northern California, up from 48 in last year’s show. All 72 works are original, completed within the last two years, and not previously exhibited in Pleasanton.

Special guest juror Ryan Reynolds, San Jose artist and arts professor at Santa Clara University, will adjudicate the show. Reynolds has recently exhibited a collection of his watercolor and oil paintings at the Firehouse Arts Center in a special one-person installation.

The exhibition opens Saturday, May 6, with a gala Artists’ Reception from 1:00-3:00 p.m. The Artist’s Reception will offer an opportunity for guests to chat with artists about their inspirations, processes, and influences, and includes an Awards Ceremony which will begin at 1:45 p.m. Juror Ryan Reynolds will be on hand, and present an informal talk during the awards session. Light refreshments will be served. Suggested donation is $5. The gallery recommends guests arrive early to ensure easy parking, as there is a matinee in the Firehouse Arts Center Theater that afternoon.

Harrington Gallery Director Julie Finegan notes a few new local participants to Fresh Works this year: Sherri Kelcourse, Dave Peterson, and Linda Ryan. Finegan also highlights a few other notable greater Bay Area artists in the show: Michael Manente, an award-winning painter from Oakland who started his career as a pictorial artist in the outdoor advertising business (think Marlboro Man billboards), will have a cityscape in the exhibit; Thomas Cory of Fremont, who also shows at Pleasanton’s Studio 7, shows a small work spotlighting his “passion for painting nature’s treasures;” and Fremont painters David Casterson and Jeff Ishikawa have works in their “realism” style.

Ron and Lisa Rigge, Robert Huberman, Denise Oyama Miller, and Carolyn Lord are a few local artists returning to this year’s exhibition, who might be familiar to Tri-Valley art-followers.

The Young@Art session for this exhibit is titled “Fresh Paint,” and will be held on Thursday, May 18, from 4:30-5:45 pm. Kids ages 5-11 will visit the exhibit and discuss the works and techniques. Then students will go upstairs to the art studio and create some art projects related to what they have learned. $15 Pleasanton residents, $20 non-residents. To register, visit www.pleasantonfun.com, and enter code 64240, or call 925-931-5340 [Call: 925-931-5340] .

The Harrington Gallery is located inside the Firehouse Arts Center, 4444 Railroad Avenue, Pleasanton, Calif. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 12:00-5:00 p.m., Saturday 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., and also one hour before most performances and during intermissions. Admission for this exhibit is free, and donations are gratefully accepted.
