Bor the Wolf is a character from the long-running Dutch puppetry TV series Fabeltjeskrant/The Fables Newspaper (1968 - 1992, Cock Andreoli). Unlike his fellow wolves, Bor is a peaceful and emotional animal. Bor is known for his distinctive, howling roar that precedes many of his statements. Bor had a central role in the feature film Onkruidzaaiers in Fabeltjesland/Weedsowers in Fableland (1970, Cock Andreoli) when all the animals are off on their annual picnic, except for Bor and just then an army of termites invades the peaceful forest.

Dutch voice actor Ger Smit (1933 - 2012) gave Bor his voice. Smit died earlier this week at 14 September in Vorden, The Netherlands. He also dubbed other popular animals of Fabeltjeskrant such as Ed Bever, Lowieke de Vos and Zoef de Haas. The other main voice actors of he series were Frans van Dusschoten and Elsje Scherjon. Smit acted earlier as Mak with Donald Jones as Mik in the legendary Dutch youth series Mik-Mak (1962-1963, Guus Verstraete) about two tramps . Later he was seen in films like Paul Verhoeven's successful feature film debut Wat zien ik/Business is Business (1971, Paul Verhoeven) and on TV in the popular soap series Goede tijden, slechte tijden/Good Times Bad Times (1994-1999). As a voice actor, he also worked on TV series like Sesamstraat/ Sesame Street, Lucky Luke and De Smurfen/The Smurfs. Tomorrow, 19 September, Ger Smit will be buried in Amsterdam.

Fabeltjeskrant (or De Fabeltjeskrant, Dutch for The Fables Newspaper) is a Dutch children's television series featuring puppetry and stop motion. Created in 1968 by Leen Valkenier and produced by Thijs Chanowski (1st series) and Loek de Levita (2nd series), it ended in 1989 and was broadcast on the Dutch channels NOS, RTL 4 and RTL 8 and on Belgian channel VRT. From 1973 to 1975 it was broadcast also in the United Kingdom, on ITV, with the title The Daily Fable. In Europe, it was also on TV in France as :Le petit écho de la Forêt/The Little Echo of the Forest, in Hungary as Fabulácskahírek/ The Fables Newspaper, in Italy as Il bosco dei perché/The Wood of the Questions, in Norway as Fablenes bok/The book of Fables, and Sweden as Fablernas värld/World of Fables.

Fabeltjeskrant was a daily recurring short program of 4- 5 minutes. Each episode is based upon fables of Jean de La Fontaine, Aesop, Phaedrus and also by the series' scenographer Leen Valkenier. The main character, the owl Meneer de Uil (Mr. Owl), introduces each episode reading a fable to other characters upon a tree. The scene is a forest inhabited by different antropomorphic paper. In 2005 Fabeltjeskrant was voted Best Children's Program of All Time in the Netherlands. At IMDb, Charmed Margeaux writes: "The fabeltjeskrant was like, the show everyone watched and knew. It has been showed to a few generations, and you won't find a single Belgian or Dutch person who hasn't seen at least a minute of this show. I grew up with it, but so did my brothers, and that's not so normal since they are 8 and 12 years older than me, and we all enjoyed it. Now, reruns are being shown on some stations and I think it's one of the best shows for little children, even now you have really soffisticated ones, I assure you, they'll love it! "

New Illustration!

Last week I asked on twitter for suggestions for how to finish my painting. I ended up going with DINOSAUR, but the other popular suggestion was that I should draw an antropomorphic rabbit in a waistcoat.

I'm not one to waste a good idea, so I turned it into its own illustration! Well, he ended up in more of a suit jacket, I hope that's ok with you guys.

I've really enjoyed this illustration. I feel like I need to write a short wordless comic about these two now, whoever they are.

"Hey, Doodle-dee diddle

The Goat and the Fiddle"

This ceramics from Radauti, Bucovina, Northeastern Romania is part of the group of pottery known as "Kuty" from a village in the Eastern Carpathians (now I presume in Ukraine, although originally in Poland).

The origins of this ceramics is steeped in history. Suffice it to say that the potters who brought these pigments and skill to the Moldavian princely Court of Stephen the Great were refugees from Byzantium, who just fell to the Ottomans. Stephen's own spouse was a Byzantine princess - Maria de Mangop, who brought in her retenue craftsmen who started a school of Tapestry in Moldavia, producing masterpieces of Byzantine art - something that Nicolae Iorga referred to as "Byzance apres Byzance".

The potters who came to Radauti, introduced the specific pigments of green and yellow, which singled out their art from the other traditional centres in Moldavia and beyond. In time they espoused the decorative motifs inspired from local crafts - the floral elements such as tulips, or the cosmic symbols of stars. They were and still are using a lot of antropomorphic and zoomorphic figures - as is the case in this plate.

The costumes of men and women which appear on the Kuty plates are rather more Polish than Molodavian and there is a certain vernacular Baroque touch about the style of the themes.

Going back to the origins of the Kuty ceramics, apparently, the Byzantine craftsmen themselves were influenced by the ceramics of the Middle Eastern potters from Iran and in particular by the selection of these green and yellow pigments whose origins go to the first millenium.

The plate shown in this picture was bought in the early 1970s from a potter whose name is Colibaba. in this family the tradition is passed on from father to son and the work which is always signed has become collector's pieces many of which are present in museums.

This is a study for a painting I'm working on.

Sometimes I feel as if I have to keep redoing a piece like I'm not sure I got it right the first few tries!

I like the idea of using the nude figures in this series on dreaming because how many times have you found yourself naked in your dreams? Naked and late for work or class in public and no time to go back home and get dressed? Being naked in a dream means that we are feeling vulnerable.

Typographic Experiment

So called "sun discs" (date unknown) at the Jakobuskirche in Tübingen, Germany.

Found among the numeruous spolia repurposed in the church, the reliefs of three "Sonnenscheiben" (sun discs) are still a mystery. The concentric circles have been interpreted as a depiction of the sun while the bent arms give the relief antropomorphic qualities. Although the Gothic rebuilding of St. James' church used many spolia from the previous Romanesque structure, the Sonnenscheiben do not seem to resemble any other works of medieval christianity and probably stem from an even older context.

Amman, 20071010. Early neolithic statue from Ain Ghazal (7000 BC) displayed in the archeological museum of Amman. This antropomorphic statue and its brothers are about half of life-sized and made of plaster on a core of twigs, They eyes are made of shell and bitumen.

I like the idea of using the nude figures in this series on dreaming because how many times have you found yourself naked in your dreams? Naked and late for work or class in public and no time to go back home and get dressed? Being naked in a dream means that we are feeling vulnerable.

First picture of a series about a workshop "theater" on Vlieland. Under direction of Bart van Gerwen.

In 1998 at a summer midnight there was: an opera at Vlieland. The name for this play was Vierwende.

This name is a combination of Dutch words. "Vier" means: fire or festivity. "Wende" is related to solstice.

As the place for this play was chosen a very quiet spot (a pond, birds swimming there, duckweed, a lovely bench and a fence to prevent children falling in the water) in the middle of the dark old forest of Vlieland. Named: Klaas Douwes Vijver. You see this place here. This is the first picture.

A whole series of pictures of this opera and a story will follow, perhaps. A group of summer guests at camping Stortemelk organized this play during a theater workshop. There were repetitions and then the opera was there for public, one evening. Especially for the young children living with their families in tents at the camping it was a great adventure to go with lamps into the dark forest and see this opera that was really a story with many magical elements. And..a small boy had the starring role in this opera.

The last picture of this series shows the end of this play: a fire spitting dragon.

What Vlieland is? See my set Vlieland. And photos of the group Vlieland here on Flickr. Vlieland is an island amidst the waves of the Northsea. Part of a group of islands: the Wadden. In the Netherlands. In summer many people go there for their vacation. There is a big camping: a summer village.

The style of this drawing is casual. A quick sketch. Of course I can make a neater version. A neat round sun, a neat straight bench...neater lettering. But I like the rhythm of this sketch and the theater play was casual. There are three "faces" in this drawing. Two sleeping, dreaming their midsummer night dream. One awakening. The silence, the strong sleepy tranquility of this spot was during a few days

broken by music, voices, a theater play.

( For this picture: pen, pencil, leaves, the original is black white, color changed in Corel).

In Remetea Mare (Timiş county), Florin Medeleţ researched a necropolis with 17 tombs (16 cremation, one inhumation) plus 3-4 destroyed tombs. Three or four were tombs of cremation in urns with lids, which were hand-made vessels that can be attributed to the Dacians, plus an inhumation tomb with an assortment of Illyric female items. We might be dealing with a community having a majority of Scordiscians, arrived here after the Balkan expedition but that did not last here long, because the inventory is from a narrow timeframe (about 270 – 240 BC) (as noted by the late colleague Florin Medeleţ and by Aurel Rustoiu).

Although this necropolis is from the same period as the Celtic vestiges from Transylvania and the western Apuseni Mountains, namely before the discoveries from the “Padea-Panaghiurski Kolonii” group in southwestern Romania, its presence in Banat and apparently belonging to the Scordiscians led us to believe it should be taken into account. Obviously, it is only after the findings here are published that we can compare them thoroughly with the vestiges in Transylvania and Oltenia.
