This is an extract from my third attempt at making an animated film. The film was called "DioscĂł" (Disco) and was made in 1995 using the "cut-out"animation technique.

As the name suggests, cut-out animation involves cutting characters out of cardboard or thick paper and then manipulating them on top of a painted background while filming in single frames with a movie camera. I used a 16mm Bolex camera.

It is a form of animation which was widely used in the past, most notably in the Monty Python films. It is particularly suited to art type films where the quirky movements of the technique can be used to good effect.

The arms, legs and heads of the characters are joined to their bodies using sewing thread, so they can be moved independently.

The film was screened at various film festivals throughout Ireland, including the Irish Animation Festival in Dublin and festivals in Galway, Derry and Cork.

The complete film can be viewed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyWxDONXnoU

Dali & Disney collaborated to make a short film animation. Yes, THAT Dali and THAT Disney.

From wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destino

"Destino is a short animated cartoon released in 2003 by The Walt Disney Company. Destino is unique in that its production originally began in 1945, 58 years before its original release. The project was a collaboration between American animator Walt Disney and Spanish painter Salvador DalĂ, and features music written by Mexican songwriter Armando Dominguez.

Destino was storyboarded by Disney studio artist John Hench and DalĂ for eight months in late 1945 and 1946; however, financial concerns caused Disney to cease production. The Walt Disney Company, then Walt Disney Studios, was plagued by many financial woes in the World War II era. Hench compiled a short animation test of about 18 seconds in the hopes of rekindling Disney's interest in the project, but the production was no longer deemed financially viable and put on indefinite hiatus.

In 1999, Walt Disney's nephew Roy Edward Disney, while working on Fantasia 2000, unearthed the dormant project and decided to bring it back to life."

As part of Design Depot at Harvest Workroom. I matched the left over bits and pieces.

The idea behind this was something along the lines of, guy finds a remote control that controls absolutely every electrical thing, then uses it to drive another man insane.

However, thanks to the ever so lovely uni deadlines, it ended up just being an animation of a guy finding a remote control in some box and finding it fascinating that it controls a blender and some DVD players. w00t....

This was finished over a period of 3 days where it's all I did (the half with the conversation and walk in was done over 2 weeks, ages ago). It's so jerky as I didn't have time to do all the frames I needed to. I finished it off this morning after getting just 2 hours sleep inbetween filming it, then charging the battery of my camera after an hour.

The sound isn't great quality... but I'm no studio lady. The voices are done by Matt Dayton (he is not mattness) as he is a great voice person of great voice ways, I shall be bugging him to do it again :P. Unfortunately I had to use my own voice at times when putting all the sound in this morning as the whooole animation is basically completely different to my script as they didn't give us enough time to do both animations well AND the essay.

*breaths*

Oh yeah, sorry it's orange and just photographed, I had no time to scan it and photoshop it either.

Ah ok, it's generally just piss poor... but here, you can watch it anyway :P

Plus, how many times does that guy morph into someone else in just a minute? XD

'Window' was a short animation project created by me and 3 other students. We had less than a week to create and edit it so it isnt necessarily the most polished piece but we were fairly happy with it. The plant characters (and their facial expressions), a couple of backdrops and a couple of props (cars, windows etc) were made by me. Whilst I didnt voice the character, I did record them from a friend and edit them myself, and I also entirely edited the final product together. I was also obviously involved in the actual animation process.

I am quite happy with the piece as a first step in the world of animation.

Animes and Cartoons

Animes? What’s that?

Animes refer to art form or animation that can be found in cinemas. Earlier, it was referred to as an animation particular to Japan which was done using graphics, character and themes. However, of late, it has been understood as a style of animation or television entertainment created in Japan or Japanimation as it was known in the 1970’s. Though anime has emerged as a distinct genre, it still follows the steps of traditional animation- storyboarding, voice-acting, character-design, and cel-production. Earlier, images for animes were made from paper cutouts, blackboards, silhouettes etc. During the 1990’s, animators started making animes by using computer software. In some cases, key frames and in-between animation also gets used.

Bachelor-degrees-animations-gamings-vfx-graphics-designs-course-program-anime-cartoonThe importance of anatomy is pivotal for creating an anime character. It is said that the body proportions of the character should exactly match those of the human body. Most characters are either seven or eight heads in height. Modifications maybe made so that deformed characters can be created which are usually two to four heads. Some creative alumni from best animation institutes spined courage to defy the credo by creating some animes that have not followed these rules and hence they look similar to cartoons made out of Japan.

One thing that stands out in anime characters are the size of the eyes which are usually exaggerated. This is because the entire gamut of human emotions can be depicted through the eyes. So, for giving depth to the cornea, variable colour shading is done by anime artists. However, there could be an exception as not all animes have large eyes. Depending on the hair colour, the eyes could have corresponding colours. Therefore, it becomes necessary that the hair design is styled colourfully so that action and emotions produce a visual effect. All this are done keeping in mind the mood and thought that the character may have in its mind.

The successes of animes have been attributed to the following reasons:

Spread of television: The sale of TV sets, especially in post-World War II Japan, increased leaps and bounds. Infact by 1965, around 90% of Japanese households owned a TV set! This helped the animated anime series to be such a big hit when it was released in the mid 1960’s.

animaster-Best-Animation-degree-courses-programs-Bangalores-Indian-Tezuka_OsamuSuccess of Tetsuwan Atomu: ‘Tetsuwan Atomu’ (Japanese for Atom boy) was the first anime ever made. It was made by the legendary Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989) and subsequent animators started to follow his example in later years. Till 1963, the Japanese public had to look up to animation made by the Chinese or Americans for ideas and their entertainment. Moreover, since Japan had to still recover from the devastation of the World War II and animation was seen as both expensive and time consuming especially for screening it on TV. However, Tezuka, by founding ‘Mushi Pro’, made the impossible possible.

Then, what are Cartoons?Best-Top-No 1-animation-colleges-institute-academy-center-Bangalore-Karnataka-India-cartoon-veggies

The word cartoon has originated from the word karton meaning strong or heavy paper. Its history can be traced to 1499 wherein the Pope is seen playing a game of cards with the Roman emperor and the kings of France and England. However, the current understanding of cartoon has nothing to with its etymology. Since it can be seen in the print media as well as in films, a cartoon can be referred to as a drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way as well as a ‘motion picture using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects’. In most situations, the purpose of a cartoon is to induce laughter by focusing on topics that are humorous. Though one may make educational cartoons, the primary market for cartoons has been young children. To denote the humour element in a cartoon, dialogues or captions are used by cartoonists.

When cartoons are seen as a form of visual arts, anatomy is ignored in most cases. This is the reason why we see that the characters have features that would be not relative to the restof the body. They also are done using the process of traditional animation. Though principles of anatomy may not be strictly adhered, some resemblance to humans can be seen. The duration for a cartoon animation cannot be fixed as it could be for few minutes or could stretch for an entire hour. Though most of them are to make people laugh, few cartoons could be satirical at times.

Steps in making an AnimeBest-Top-No 1-animation-colleges-institute-academy-center-Bangalores-Karnataka-Indias-anime-sketch

The following steps maybe considered to make animes:

Three Frames Shooting: Regular animation works on 12-18 frames per second whereas it is 8 or less in the case of animes.

Stop-Images: This technique involves, for example, blocking a character’s mouth while it is speaking by using a single or still image.

Pulling cels: Here, animators move a single animation cel across the background. This saves time spent on drawing as well as money.

Repetition: in this technique, cels are reused or in some cases, animated sequences within a sequence may be also reused. By this, an illusion gets created.

Sectioning: Here, parts of the shots are animated whereas the rest of them are stop-images.

Cel-banking: In this step, the animation cels are reused along with the animated sequence.

Lip-Synching: Cels at the mouth area of the anime are animated. These animations maybe used over and over again.

Short Shot Length: This is a trick that is employed so that the audiences don’t realize that the images are lacking in animation!

Special Effects Layers: Certain onscreen effects are created without full animation that are done through layers.

Camera Movement: Movements like pulling away, zooming in, panning across a shot, or fading in or out etc. create an artificial movement. These help anime animators to create an illusion which may distract viewers!

Steps in making a cartoon animationanimaster-Best-Animation-degree-courses-programs-Bangalores-Indias-cartoons

The following steps maybe considered:

Brainstorm for getting ideas as well as a fair idea of the resources one may have

Decide on the duration of the cartoon-whether it is for a show or movie

Determine the target audience

Use imagination to come up with a plot or storyline

Start writing the script along with dialogues if necessary

Ensure to divide the story into as many parts as possible

Begin animating by starting off with cel animation

Try to use ‘stop-motion’ techniques

Try using 3D models

See if you can record your own sound effects or look for pre-recorded ones

Jupiter, I shot this a wee while ago.. 2010 October 6-7

An animation of about 1/3 of Jupiter's rotation, captured using a 25cm Newtonian telescope at f5.6 and a Philips SPC900NC, using wxAstrocapture to control the webcam and record the videos to disc. A new video was shot every 10 minutes over three hours.

Registax was used to process each video. About 500 video frames (each 1/100s exposure) were averaged (stacked) for each frame of the final animation.

Registax was also used for the final registration of the frames for the animation, then Imagemagick to make the final animated GIF you see here (by clicking on the original-size option). Non "pro" flickr users can see the animation here: dl.dropbox.com/u/11530205/jupiter_rot.gif

It is not really very good, but serves of an example of what you can achieve using basic equipment and the wonderful software tools freely available.

The Magic of Disney Animation -- This attraction underwent a major rehab in November 2003, and then another minor rehab in October 2004. Here's the current format:

The tour begins with visitors sitting in an area featuring a live artist. The 10-minute segment, called "Drawn to Animation," features the artist interacting with an animated version of the tiny dragon Mushu, from 1998's popular feature Mulan. After hearing about the importance of character development and watching a humorous video with some Mulan artists, guests will visit the area that overlooks what USED to be the workspace of Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. The Cast Member in this segment talks briefly about animation, and answers a few questions. Unfortunately, the real Disney animators were all laid off in early January 2003, and the entire animation process relocated to Disney's California studios, so there is nothing much to see when you are released from that part of the tour. After the cast member's talk, visitors have the chance to visit a number of interactive activities or to sit for 15-20 minutes at a Mickey-themed animator table and create their own Disney character art at the Animation Academy, under the guidance of a Disney artist.

The Sound Stage -- In this hands-on activity, young animators can play with various sound effects and create their own soundtrack for an animated scene.

Digital Ink and Paint -- As these workstations you can add color to an animated scene, and create your own atmosphere.

You're a Character -- In this booth, you can visit with Lumiere (of Beauty and the Beast fame), who will ask you a series of questions and tell you which Disney character you are most like.
