On 20 May 2013 Haringey councillors held the Annual General Meeting of the Council
This AGM was in the Moselle Room in the former Tottenham Town Hall — sold off by Haringey Council in its gradual retreat from having a civic presence in Tottenham.
Time at the AGM was mostly frittered away by the election of two councillors to the positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the new Municipal year.
Unlike some cities where mayors actually do stuff, Mayors in Haringey are ceremonial. They swan about in gold bling and a fluffy white bib. Proving the accuracy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's observation that women and men are born free but are often in chains.
The Mayoral role is sometimes a consolation prize for councillors at the end or - if they are really useless - the beginning of their term of office.
At Haringey's "Mayor Making" ceremony it was - maybe still is - a cherished custom for other councillors to deliver dull plodding speeches commending the councillors nominated as Mayor and Deputy for the new year. Praising the soon-to-be-forgotten retiring Mayor.
In 2013 David Browne (Haringey's Mayor 2012/13) broke tradition by making a short, thoughtful and intelligent speech. David was later deselected as a Labour candidate in a vote-rigging scandal in St Ann's ward.

§ An alternative to an evening of flattering saccharine praise would be the livelier tradition of Flyting. This is the exchange of insults - ideally as inventive, poetic and original as possible. Historically, flyting was a common practice recorded in Scots, Norse and Anglo Saxon literature. (Link to Wikipedia page.)
We could then look forward to the recruitment of Political Flyting assistants (unpaid volunteers of course) who would craft elaborate and entertaining insults. Or perhaps the reworking of literary past insults.
