Group of photographers from Toronto area with Sony cameras visited Tiffany Falls in Ancaster section of Hamilton.

The Hamilton section of the Bruce Trail near Hamilton, ON (south west-ish of Toronto).

The Bruce Trail is a wonderful trail system that runs the entire length of the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara Falls in the south to the tip of the Bruce Pennisula in the north. I have hiked many sections of it but never the entire length. At nearly 900 km of trail, I don't think I'll ever hike more than a small section of it but that's okay, the parts I've done are wonderful.

There is some great reading about the trail here... brucetrail.org/explore-the-trail/

170422 passes Wilsford (between Ancaster and Rauceby), working 2S17 12.50 Nottingham - Skegness. [Pole, 5/6 sections (~6.8m)]

170422 was built for ScotRail, but ScotRail began to reduce the size of its 170 fleet following electrification of several routes and the introduction of the Inter7City HSTs. The first to go were the nine sets owned by Eversholt Leasing (170416-424), with the highest numbered four being taken on by Southern (but the others remaining on short-term sublease to ScotRail); these four were fitted with Dellner couplers (like the rest of Southern's multiple unit fleet), reformed from three-car into two two-car and two four-car units, and renumbered as class 171s (171201, 171401, 171202 and 171402). In summer 2022 all four were taken off lease from Southern, restored to their original three-car formation, and leased to East Midlands Railway (although 171201 remained sub-leased from EMR to Southern). 171202, 170401 and 170402 regained their original numbers (170423, 170422 and 170424 respectively, at least as far as the driving cars are concerned) and soon regained BSI couplers; however, they entered service still in Southern livery, albeit with EMR branding - as seen here.

I'd come here for the weedkiller train returning from Boston (powered by 69002 and 69005), but it ran very early and I missed it by about twenty minutes; I guessed I had probably missed it when there were no other photographers here... Realtime Trains was refusing to load on my phone (later I ended up switching my phone off and back on again), and it took me longer to ascertain it had actually passed (using a different site). But I looked to see if anything else was coming, to salvage something from visiting this spot: a Skegness-bound service was close to departing from Ancaster so I set up for a going-away shot, although as I couldn't access RTT I had no idea it was a Southern-liveried unit.

I also saw a couple of ex-Greater Anglia (via Transport for Wales) EMR 170s this afternoon, one now in EMR purple (photographed) and one still in GA white with red doors (seen from across a field, and not photographed). In my opinion, the Southern dark green, light green and white livery is far more attractive than EMR purple - at least to the camera.

A once common Saturday sight back in 1983 when summer dated services to and from Skegness would produce locomotive haulage. In this view taken at Ancaster on the August Bank Holiday weekend, 45015 was passing with the BR Tables 53 & 27 SO 07:32 from Sheffield.

Suppose someone says something that angers you. Your old pathway wants to say something to punish him. But that makes us victims of our habit energy. Instead, you can breathe in and say, “Unhappiness is in me, suffering is in me, anger is in me, irritation is in me.” That is already helpful, recognizing your feelings and helping you not to respond right away. So you accept that anger and irritation in you, and smile to it. With mindfulness, you look at the other person and become aware of the suffering in him or in her. He may have spoken like that to try to get relief from his suffering. He may think that speaking out like that will help him suffer less, but in fact he will suffer more.

With just one or two seconds of looking and seeing the suf-fering in him, compassion is born. When compassion is born, you don’t suffer any more, and you may find something to say that will help him. With the practice, we can always open new neural pathways like that. When they become a habit, we call it the habit of happiness.

Another image from a walk among the food concessions at the Ancaster (technically, Hamilton, Ontario) Fall Fair as the last rays of the sun blasted intense, hard light onto the signage of this vendor’s stand. It is a widely accepted principle that you need to simplify and image. But this is a fall fair and neither simplicity nor subtlety enter into the design considerations when it comes to stand signage design. This is the exact opposite of the general principles. And that is what attracted me. - JW

Note: The glare off the signs was a real issue here and also the intense low angle, very warm light added to the challenges in processing this image. The following is how I handled it. And, yes, a polarizer may have been helpful, but not if it was a 45 minute drive away.

Latin name: Polyommatus icarus - Common Blue

This male Common Blue was flitting around and finally landed on some ragwort for a feed. The wings were a little damaged but still beautiful. I managed to get a shot of them in a 'V' which showed both the upper and under wing patterns and colours.

Sherman Falls is in Ancaster, Ontario where the Ancaster Creek flows over the Niagara Escarpment. It is classified as a Ribbon / Terraced waterfall. The creek is spring fed so this waterfall has a more steady flow than many in the area.

This was quite a treat to see in person. I've never visited any of the many waterfalls in the Hamilton area, so I was thrilled when my 1.5 hours drive ended at this location. SO WORTH IT!

Ancaster, Lincolnshire. The first station after Grantham on the Poacher Line to Skegness, Ancaster is an unmanned station, though the signal box is still a working feature. It was opened by the Boston, Sleaford and Midland Counties Railway in June 1857, and is now operated by East Midlands Railway.
