Der Watzmann ist der zentrale Gebirgsstock der Berchtesgadener Alpen. Das bekannte Kalksteinmassiv gipfelt in der 2713 m ü. NHN hohen Watzmann-Mittelspitze, die zugleich der höchste Punkt des Berchtesgadener Landes ist. Um den Watzmann und seine Nebengipfel Kleiner Watzmann (auch Watzmannfrau oder Watzfrau genannt) und Watzmannkinder rankt sich die Watzmannsage. Die Watzmann-Ostwand gilt als höchste Wand der Ostalpen.
The Watzmann (Bavarian: Watzmaun) is a mountain in the Bavarian Alps south of the village of Berchtesgaden. It is the third highest in Germany, and the highest located entirely on German territory.
Three main peaks array on a N-S axis along a ridge on the mountain's taller western half: Hocheck (2651 m), Mittelspitze (Middle Peak, 2,713m) and Südspitze (South Peak, 2,712m).
The Watzmann massif also includes the 2307 m Watzmannfrau (Watzmann Wife, also known as Kleiner Watzmann or Small Watzmann), and the Watzmannkinder (Watzmann Children), five lower peaks in the recess between the main peaks and the Watzmannfrau.
The entire massif lies inside Berchtesgaden National Park.

El monumento es un homenaje al arquitecto del siglo XVIII Juan de Villanueva, responsable de multitud de edificios y lugares emblemáticos de Madrid como el Museo del Prado, el Jardín Botánico o la reconstrucción de la Plaza Mayor.
La fuente se construyó en 1952 con un diseño de los arquitectos Víctor D’Ors, Joaquín Núñez Mera y Manuel Ambros
