Melody is, and ever will be, the very flower of music. ~August W. Ambros (1816–1876)

There can't be that many locations in the UK where locomotive hauled passenger trains work regular services through such beautiful countryside.

68021 Tireless is seen in charge of a Scarborough to York service as she heads south west at Huttons Ambro. The River Derwent forms the attractive foreground.

Intanto sei solo. Là fuori c'è allegria.... Ciao, Gesù dimenticato

And you are waiting...

Hi, forgotten Jesus

Sullo sfondo i monti gemelli e monte Zampa, monte Sibilla

Immersed in the naturalistic scenery of the Sibillini, between the Priora and Castel Manardo mountains, stands the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Ambro, the second place of Marian worship, after Loreto and the oldest in the Marche, most likely erected around the year 1000 in the area of Montefortino. This oasis of religious peace reopened its doors to the faithful for the 2018 Christmas Eve Mass after being closed due to damage from the 2016 earthquake.

68025 "Superb" is seen heading down the River Derwent on a rainy morning at Huttons Ambro.

The naming of the majority of the class 68 locomotives has returned a degree of tradition to current rail scene. Some of the class have been named after Greek gods whilst others use positive adjectives like "Valiant', "Couragous" and "Defiant". Being a little old fashioned these names appeal much more than the recent fad of using names that have corporate references.

The as yet unnamed 68033 is seen here on a route learning/driver training turn. The delightful location is adjacent to the River Derwent at Huttons Ambro just south of Malton.

The Watzmann is a mountain in the Bavarian Alps south of the village of Berchtesgaden. It is the third highest mountain in Germany ("Middle Peak" (2.713m), after Zugspitze (2.962m) and Hochwanner (2.744m), and the highest located entirely on German territory.

Groß und mächtig, schicksalsträchtig,

um seinen Gipfel jagen, Nebelschwaden

A Donnern schickt er oft ins Tal

Watzmann, Watzmann, Schicksalsberg,

du bist so groß und i nur a Zwerg...

die nur an manchen Tagen scheint. (songtext by Wolfgang Ambros; Viennese dialect; could be translated as: You are like the winter sun that only shines on some days)

It was very foggy in the area today so I hiked along the Mississippi River to see what I could find. It was a good day for woodpeckers like this red-bellied male that call this rich floodplain forest home.

68021 is seen on a Scarborough to York service heading west at Huttons Ambro. It had just started to rain so shelter was taken under the tree canopy.

This little downy male is working up a dead ash tree that has likely succumbed to the emerald ash borer. Lots of woodpecker activity is one of the indicators that the emerald ash borer beetle is infecting trees.
