El Pepino tree frog (Hyloscirtus torrenticola) - Amazonian foothills, Ecuador
Hyloscirtus has to be one of my favorite tree frog genera. Colloquially known as torrenteers or sometimes babbling torrenteers, these tree frogs are associated with high quality running water in jungle settings. They have a beautiful call but also a pesky habit of calling from underneath rocks or from within crevices, so while its often relatively easy to hear them it can be insanely annoying and fruitless trying to track one down. For this reason im always happy when I see a new species in the genus. This is a relatively small species that is found across a narrow elevational gradient in on the East slope of the Andes in the Amazonian foothills of Northern Ecuador and Southern Colombia. This was the only adult I saw, and a few fresh metamorphs that had just barely left the water and still had their tail, although hard to tell at that stage I presume they belong to this species as well. This individual had his back foot gnawed off by a predator at some point but it has since healed over and the frog seems to be doing just fine without the back foot.

Common Lancehead- Bothrops atrox
Ecuador

Image so title because of what their venom essentially does to you. A nice looking little viper though and perfectly relaxed. This one was about a foot long but they can grow far bigger.
*All my photos from now on will be downsized like crazy hence the reduced sharpness. Have found my photos being used in way too many places without permission or compensation so now will not be posting any sort of his res images.

Green-banded Urania (Urania leilus) - Yasuni National Park, Ecuador
Most people are surprised to learn that these are not butterflies but actually moths. Not only do they break the stereotype that moths are dully colored but they're also day active and migrate like some butterflies are known to do! More so their antennae are not obviously feathered like that of many moth species. Quite common in Yasuni during my brief visit.

Whipscorpion & Katydid - Yasuni National Park, Ecuador
After my quick photo dump of katydid images, I still have many more but will save them for another time. I thought it would be appropriate to show some of the predators they have to contend with such as this tailless whipscorpion. These arachnids look quite scary but are essentially harmless to us, not so to small invertebrates like this katydid which has fallen prey to this whipscorpion.
smooth-billed ani (Crotophaga ani) - Yasuni National Park, Ecuador
A ubiquitous bird in much of South America. It is found nearly anywhere there are open grassy areas and thus flourishes in cultivated areas such as pastures. Not an animal you'd normally find in the middle of the Amazon rainforest but a good number of them had made themselves at home in the clearing where the field station was located.
Speckled Forest Pit Viper- Bothriopsis bilineata
Ecuador
May 2016
www.matthewjsullivanphoto.com/
All that need to be said was BILINEATA! An incredibly beautiful viper, and one I had very much hoped to see. This was taken out in the rainforest despite looking like a studio shot. Studio shots aren't my favorite style but it works well to show off this snake.

Rhinella dapsilis - Amazonian foothills, Ecuador
Amphibians often shed their skin, but why let a good resource go to waste? This toad demonstrates a solution as it simultaneously sheds its skin and consumes it. This helps it regain nutrients it would have otherwise lost.
Syntermes sp. - Yasuní National Park, Ecuador.
I'm always pretty happy to come across Syntermes sp termites in the Amazon rainforest. The big soldiers are about the size of a jelly bean and are quite imposing. Usually when I see them they beat a hasty retreat back underground.
In the tranquil waters of Lagos Yaguacaca, I had the pleasure of photographing the exquisite Purple Gallinule, Porphyrio martinica. This vibrant bird, a jewel of the wetlands, stood out with its brilliant blue and green plumage against the verdant backdrop of Leticia, Colombia. Its poised stance and the curious tilt of its head as it navigated the delicate branches was a testament to the graceful adaptability of these creatures.
The shot aims to capture not just the gallinule's striking coloration but also its natural behavior in the wild. The interplay of light and shadow highlights the textures of its feathers, while the contrasting yellow legs draw the eye, showcasing the bird’s adaptation to its marshy environment. As a photographer, my intention is to share these fleeting moments of natural wonder, hoping to inspire appreciation and a deeper connection with the avian world.

Taeniophallus brevirostris - Rio Bigal Reserve, Ecuador
A small snake that can be found living in the leaf litter of Amazonian rainforest.
Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri cassiquiarensis) & Katydid (Celidophylla sp ?) - Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Ecuador
I posted another image from this depredation even before, but here is another reminder of what happens when a katydids camouflage fails. Seems like just about every type of animal will happily eat a katydid, I've seen several species of monkeys opportunistically consume them, toucans and other birds happily eat katydids, lizards will as well, and of course other invertebrates like the whipscorpion in my previous photo must eat many 1000s of them every night.

Osteocephalus sp - Yasuni National Park, Ecuador
Not entirely sure of the ID but a small tree hollow filled with standing water and leaf litter in Yasuni. It also contained lots and lots of small tadpoles which I think belong to Osteocephalus sp tree frogs.

Mushroom-tongue Salamander (Bolitoglossa peruviana) - Rio Bigal Reserve, Ecuador
Although hyperdiverse in most senses of biodiversity, the Amazon is actually quite deficient in terms of salamanders and only a few species occur there, no more than 4 species have been recorded in Amazonian Ecuador. I believe this one is B. peruviana but it also resembles B. altamazonica. Unlike most of the salamanders in North America, these salamanders are almost always seen climbing vegetation at night and rarely encountered at ground level. They move quite slowly but when they encounter prey their tongue shoots out with a speed that puts a chameleon's tongue to shame.
Cercosaura argulus (Elegant Eyed Lizard) - Rio Bigal Reserve, Ecuador
A small lizard from the Amazon basin. This one was found sleeping on a leaf, my photography woke it up and it walked around the edge of the leaf investigating until determining that there was no threat when it settled back in for the night.
