Seeing Cobalt-winged Parakeets and Orange-cheeked Parrots in the Amazon at one of the clay licks at Yasuni National Park was something incredibly special to behold.

One of several clownfrog species we turned up, this individual was spectacular. A beautiful frog, their call.... not so much.

The Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) is a Neotropical bird that lives along slow-moving rivers and lakes in the Amazon Basin. With a distinct appearance, loud calls, a tendency to live in social groups, and a clumsy way of moving through foliage, Hoatzins are fairly easy to find in their habitat.

The Hoatzin is a unique and amazing bird found in the Amazon region of South America. I was thrilled to see so many of them on my recent trip to Ecuador, which included a week or so in the hot, humid but highly biodiverse Amazon Rainforest.
I was in Ecuador for a conservation photography with other youth from photographers Karine Aigner and Lucas M. Bustamante. It was a highly educational, super fun and unforgettable experience!

In the lush expanse of Lagos Yaguacaca, I had the fortune to photograph the enigmatic Crane Hawk, Geranospiza caerulescens. Perched stoically amongst the verdant canopy, the hawk's grey plumage and intense red eyes command attention, embodying the raw essence of the predators of the skies. The fine details of its feathers, captured against the soft blur of the Colombian rainforest, highlight the bird's adaptability to its environment – a perfect subject for the art of avian photography.
The image speaks to the bird's solitary nature, with its gaze fixed intently beyond the frame, suggesting a narrative of survival and dominion within this biodiverse landscape. As a photographer, such moments are a delicate dance of patience and readiness, waiting for nature to unveil its stories in its own unpredictable tempo.

This was the first snake we found in Ecuador, cruised on the gravel road on the way into the research station.

A flock of Santarem Parakeets, with gray, white, and black plumage and striking yellow beaks, perch on the bare branches of a tree in the Encantada Forest near Santarém, deep in the Brazilian Amazon. The overcast sky and lush greenery in the background evoke a serene and mysterious mood, characteristic of the rainforest.
Un groupe de Conures de Santarém, au plumage gris, blanc et noir avec des becs jaunes éclatants, est perché sur les branches nues d’un arbre dans la forêt Encantada, près de Santarém, au cœur de l’Amazonie brésilienne. Le ciel couvert et la végétation luxuriante en arrière-plan créent une atmosphère paisible et mystérieuse, typique de la forêt tropicale.
Amazon Basin emerald tree boa (Corallus batesii) - Yasuni National Park, Ecuador
One of the prettiest snakes on the planet and one that is rarely encountered. They live in the tree tops in the rainforest and are well camouflaged to help them remain concealed. Only rarely do they descend to ground level, I have heard reports of heavy rain driving them lower from the canopy. This one cannot be explained so as it was relatively dry when it was found.
