Amazonia 😢

This is our biodiversity being transformed into yet more carbon in the atmosphere. Two environmental crimes at once. It is hard to express the frustration and hopelessness that someone who works with the amazon forest feels... I made this picture a few weeks ago, in my last trip to there. These days, the media has been showing the alarming rates of fires happening in the region for the last three weeks, but, I must say, the amazon has been burning for much longer. These are not natural fires, they are deliberately started with the purpose of destroying the forest and opening areas for cattle and agriculture, and the record levels we see now in Brazil are a consequence of people feeling encouraged by a government that seems to have waged war against the forest and the environment. However, even a few years ago, when deforestation was shrinking, I never thought we had anything to celebrate. Slowing it down is not enough - deforestation has to stop. The amazon forest is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, and it is too important for the local and global climate for us to simply destroy it. But we don't have much time: scientist believe there is only so much deforestation the amazon can take before being unable to maintain itself and changing into a savanna. Praying won't help - Saving the amazon, and solving other environmental problems as well, will require an unprecedent level of commitment at all possible scales, from international politics to our very own way of life.

The Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, near the city of Tefé, is a 22,000-square-mile (57,000 km2) reserve near the village of Boca do Mamirauá. It includes mostly Amazonian flooded forest and wetlands.

Mamirauá is recognised by the international Ramsar Convention, as a wetland of global importance, as well as part of a World Heritage Convention's natural site. It has been proposed that the Reserve should form part of a future UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Brazilian Amazon. At present, it is included in one of the Ecological Corridors to be implemented by the PPG-7 Program for the Protection of Brazilian Tropical Forests.

The reserve is the legacy and life work of Brazilian scientist José Márcio Ayres.

Mamirauá has a human population estimated in 6,306 individuals, including amazonian caboclo, Ticuna, Cambeba and Cocama ameridian groups.

Mamirauá hosts a large diversity of birds, with more than 400 species recorded, including toucans, harpy eagle, hoatzin, 15 species of parrots and, specially, aquatic birds. Two species of monkeys, the white uakari and the black squirrel monkey are endemic of this region, which is also home of other kinds of arboreal mammals such as howler monkeys, sloths, coati and collared anteaters. Land mammals are not that common as most of the territory is flooded during the wet season. During this season the pink dolphin is distributed in the flooded forest.

The most conspicuous of the numerous fish species are tambaqui, piranha and pirarucu. Mamirauá is also a perfect place to spot the Amazon river dolphins, both boto and tucuxi.

“Canaima Transportation”

www.imbeccableimages.com/store/p556/CanaimaTransportation

This is the journey that started it all. I traveled to Venezuela to stay with my pregnant sister and her husband for five weeks back in 2012. The country was on the brink of a civil war, but the violence hadn’t broke yet.

Orazio and I went on a weekend trip to Canaima to see Angel Falls, the worlds tallest free falling waterfall.

To get to the waterfall, we had to ride in this boat. The guy sitting in the front steered the boat, and there was a gentleman sitting behind us in charge of the motor. It was so cool to journey through the Amazon Forest by boat.

Before this exploration, I hadn’t been much of an outdoor person. I would only take photos of scenes in town, places that were convenient. I realized that I wanted to see more, to go on endless adventures, and this was all comprehended after realizing that I just hiked, boated, ate, and slept in the Amazon Forest. The freakin’ Amazon Forest!! And you know what? I’ll go back in a heartbeat.
